Chapter 908: Chapter 909 Toxic Fatherly Love 41

"Just for this?" Zhang Yu chuckled, "Watch more news, listen to people more, and you’ll understand."

"You’ve got parents to protect you, so you don’t have to care. Me? I’ve always relied on myself."

In the past life, those twins were well cared for. Wu Hao and his wife really thought of everything—a pair of truly good parents.

This time, though, they probably can’t manage that, especially with an unstable element like Wu Min in the picture.

Wu Min wasn’t as smart as Wu Jian. She also had a bad temper. The worst part? She was full of herself. She resented how, in Wu Hao and his wife’s eyes, there was only Wu Jian.

The seed had been planted. Over time, Wu Min was bound to give Wu Hao and those three people quite the surprise.

Zhang Yu, for one, was really looking forward to it. How those four, once united against the world in their past life, would fall apart this time—truly fascinating.

"Sometimes, listening to your parents’ advice isn’t just talk—it’s real."

"Nowadays, even working at a bank requires you to pull in deposits."

"And you think going to an investment bank wouldn’t come with similar demands?" Zhang Yu retorted.

"Ahhh, is that so? I get it now," Wang Lei said, flustered.

"Once we’re in college, you can keep working hard," Zhang Yu added. After all, you only live once, so of course you have to try your best.

Didn’t they say that, given a fixed length of life, you had to work to expand its width?

"Ahhh," Wang Lei groaned at this point, immediately sighing heavily. "Spare me. I’ve just finished the college entrance exams and haven’t even had time to enjoy myself. And now you’re already telling me how stressful college is going to be? This is too much!"

"I’ll think about it after I enter college," Wang Lei said decisively. "For now, I’m going to sleep."

There was no point continuing the conversation. Otherwise, she might not even get any rest and would end up diving back into books straight away.

"By the way, Little Yu, what do you think I should study in college?" Although she’d declared her intent to sleep, Wang Lei couldn’t resist asking.

Seeing Wang Lei’s expectant gaze, Zhang Yu chuckled. "As for that, I have no idea. You could ask your teachers, or maybe some upperclassmen."

"Of course, the most important thing is that you need to have a genuine interest."

"If you’re not interested, it’ll all be for nothing."

Zhang Yu could have just given Wang Lei an answer, but he refrained—it didn’t seem right to do so.

Wang Lei was easy to fool, but her parents weren’t. They’d catch on to any potential issues.

For the sake of his personal safety, it was better not to say anything.

Wang Lei thought about it and agreed. "I’ll put in the effort once I’m in college."

"I’ve worked so hard already; I need some rest."

"Sleep it is."

Suddenly, Wang Lei let slip, "I wonder what Mom and Dad are discussing."

She figured her parents were probably in heated talks about the matter and that it would take them some time to come to a conclusion.

What Wang Lei didn’t know was that, right after hanging up, Father Wang mentioned her phone call to Mother Wang, leaving her stunned.

After a long pause, she said, "Where did this idea even come from all of a sudden?"

"My guess is it’s Grandma’s reward for Zhang Yu—probably a house," Father Wang speculated. "Otherwise, why would Little Yu bring this up out of the blue?"

Father Wang knew his daughter well. She wasn’t the type to delve into such matters or come up with ideas like this on her own.

"Buying food, drinks, clothes—those I can imagine."

"But buying a house?" It wasn’t that he doubted his daughter, but Father Wang simply couldn’t wrap his mind around the idea.

Mother Wang kept nodding. "Yes, yes, that must be it. So, should we buy one?"

"Buy it. If Zhang Yu has one, there’s no reason our daughter shouldn’t, and it’s not like we can’t afford it."

"We’ll even buy it next to Zhang Yu’s home." Even if Zhang Yu didn’t live there and chose to rent it out instead, it didn’t matter. What counted was showing Zhang Yu that they were aligned.

Mother Wang nodded. "Alright. What about the graduation banquet? Should we still do it?"

"Of course!" Father Wang insisted. He had his pride. "Our daughter scored so well—why wouldn’t we throw a party to celebrate?"

"As for the house, we won’t mention it. If word gets out, people will start asking to borrow it." Father Wang understood his relatives all too well—they’d have no qualms about making such requests.

"This way, no one will know about the house and no one will ask to borrow it." In Father Wang’s eyes, this was the perfect solution.

Mother Wang had no objections. "We’ll talk to Xiao Lei about it when she gets back."

Meanwhile, after some inquiries, Wu Hao learned about Zhang Yu’s test scores. Staring at those numbers, he didn’t speak for a long time.

Feng Min was just as shocked. Even though the arts exam was said to be easier, getting such high scores was no ordinary feat.

She didn’t even dare to think about whether Wu Jian could achieve such results when it was his turn to take the college entrance exams.

Wu Jian glanced at the scores, realizing they must belong to Zhang Yu. He remained silent.

Wu Min, however, gaped at the scores and exclaimed, "That’s amazing."

"Yeah, even better than her mock exam results," Wu Min recalled Zhang Yu’s previous mock scores.

"With this score, she could pick any school with her eyes closed," Wu Hao muttered, his mood heavy.

What should have been a proud moment for the Wu Family, a chance for Wu Hao to revel in success and throw an elaborate celebration, had instead turned into something he could only witness from afar. If he hadn’t pried into her scores, he wouldn’t even have known.

Wu Hao felt another pang of regret. Why had he insisted on divorcing Zhang Lina back then? He could’ve had an outstanding daughter and a stable financial situation, without the endless struggle of trying to make money as a middle-aged man.

Noticing Wu Hao’s expression, Feng Min realized he was thinking about Zhang Yu again. She quickly signaled Wu Jian to say something to divert his attention.

But Wu Jian knew what Feng Min wanted. Still, he had no desire to step up. Doing so would only invite criticism and lectures from Wu Hao, so he opted to stay silent.

Feng Min kept nudging Wu Jian with looks, but he refused to respond. Exasperated, she turned to Wu Min and motioned for her to speak up.

Wu Min pretended not to notice. Was this a joke? Their prized son wouldn’t dare speak, so why should she, the designated scapegoat, volunteer herself? What kind of fool would take on that role willingly?

Seeing Wu Min’s attitude, Feng Min was visibly annoyed. "Wu Min, after seeing your sister’s college entrance exam scores, what do you think?"

Still, Wu Min wasn’t going to bite. It didn’t matter even if she was called out directly. She could continue to ignore it.

"I have nothing to say. Everyone knows my grades aren’t good enough to get into high school, let alone bring glory to the family."

But why should she be the only unlucky one? That was never going to happen. Wu Min quickly shifted the focus. "Haven’t you all been saying how great my brother’s grades are? Then just ask him."

Wu Jian had thought the ordeal would pass without incident, only to find the issue circling back to him.

He shot Wu Min a venomous glare, while she smiled sweetly in response, infuriating him further.

"Mom, Dad, I’m taking the sciences for my college entrance exams. It’s impossible to compare, and I don’t know the difficulty level of the papers either," Wu Jian said dryly.

Hmph. That brat thought she could trip him up? Feeble attempt.

"When the time comes, we’ll look at her city ranking. Your science ranking had better not fall behind hers," Wu Hao interjected, his tone as cold as entering a frozen abyss.

Wu Min was quite satisfied with Wu Hao’s response.

Wu Jian, on the other hand, was cursing inwardly. He’d never seen a father like this, who cared more about appearances than the goal’s feasibility.

No matter how much resentment he felt, Wu Jian didn’t dare voice it. All he could do was repeatedly promise he’d meet the expectations.
