Chapter 900: Chapter 901 Toxic Fatherly Love 33
Wu Hao turned and walked back to the office. "You go to the school."
"You spend your whole paycheck supporting your family, and I still have to provide for you. You freeload at my house and can’t even discipline the children."
Wu Hao deeply regretted his choices. Back in college, there were so many female classmates he could’ve chosen from, yet he just had to pick Feng Min. Truly a blind decision.
Feng Min glared angrily at Wu Hao, who clearly did not want to go to the school. "Isn’t she your daughter too? Will you go or not?"
Wu Hao looked down at Feng Min’s hand. "Let go."
"I have work to do."
"Unless you get divorced, then you can completely wash your hands of anything to do with the child."
Feng Min quickly let go upon hearing Wu Hao mention divorce once again, not daring to push him further.
In the past, she would throw out threats of divorce casually. But now, she didn’t dare say such things, fearful she’d fall right into Wu Hao’s trap and end up being roped into getting divorced for real.
Feng Min reluctantly took leave from work to go to the school. Meanwhile, talk about Wu Min requiring her parents to visit the school yet again started circulating at her workplace.
Ordinarily, teachers asking parents to come to school wouldn’t be a big deal; plenty of people around the office had been through this kind of situation.
Most would just make a few jokes about it, and that was the end of it. But Feng Min was different; she had worked hard to craft an ideal image of her two children—a young literary talent, a sports prodigy, good grades.
Now, however, that carefully constructed image was crumbling little by little, especially with Wu Min. Her piano skills were mediocre, her grades weren’t great.
That could be excused, but she frequently got into arguments and fights at school, leading the teachers to call her parents in all the time.
"Did you hear? Wu Hao’s eldest daughter’s grades are quite good. She’s already ranked first in the liberal arts class," a colleague said about Zhang Yu, who happened to attend the same high school as her own child.
However, Zhang Yu was in the twelfth grade, while her child was in eleventh grade. "Apparently, Zhang Yu started skyrocketing in ranking ever since she entered twelfth grade."
"She climbed from somewhere around the top hundred all the way to firmly securing first place, far surpassing the second place finisher."
"Her grades are excellent," someone exclaimed in surprise. "It really is a world of difference."
"Exactly. The unwanted daughter ends up excelling, while the one raised like a treasure turns out to have terrible grades."
"Even if her grades are bad, that’s one thing—but to top it off, she’s constantly arguing and fighting with others," commented a parent whose child attended the same school as the twins, full of disdain.
In the past, Feng Min had pulled out all the stops to promote her two kids, never shying away from disparaging this parent’s son. "My son’s grades aren’t that impressive, sure, but at least he doesn’t stir up trouble, and I don’t have to keep running to the school."
"As for his academic struggles, it’s something I’ve come to terms with. My expectations for him aren’t high—if he can graduate middle school, that’s good enough," this older, resigned mother remarked.
"Feng Min’s daughter, though—even just getting through middle school might be her limit with those grades. She insists on going to high school, but college? Not a chance."
"Forget college—even getting into high school would be a feat."
At that moment, Wu Hao happened to pass by and overheard the office crowd discussing Wu Min. Their mocking laughter and harsh comments left him feeling deeply unsettled.
But what could he do? No matter how unhappy he was, what they said was true; he couldn’t storm in and start arguing with them.
Wu Hao scowled, walking off in a huff. The office workers noticed his displeased expression, but it didn’t faze them.
If Wu Hao’s promotion had gone through last time, they might have held back—too afraid to gossip like this. But his promotion didn’t pan out, and now there was almost no hope of one in the future.
Although he was somewhat capable, he hadn’t reached the crucial level. Instead, he repeatedly sabotaged himself, handing ammunition to his opponents and still dreaming of a promotion?
Wu Hao, visibly upset, headed to the rooftop to smoke and clear his mind, leaving the space for his colleagues to continue their discussion. If he kept listening, he’d only feel worse.
Lighting a cigarette, Wu Hao contemplated how everything had come to this point. Everything had clearly been moving in a good direction initially.
Wu Hao couldn’t wrap his mind around it, feeling an overwhelming sense of frustration. Feng Min wasn’t in a good mood either today, constantly apologizing.
The other parent wasn’t about to let things go, thoroughly berating Feng Min. And that wasn’t the end of it—they dragged her along to the hospital.
Leaving the hospital, Feng Min gave Wu Min a disappointed look. "What have you been doing all day? Can’t you let me relax even for a moment?"
"Why can’t you be more like your brother?" Feng Min said weakly.
At first, Wu Min listened quietly to Feng Min’s relentless nagging with no intention of responding. But the moment Wu Jian was mentioned, her facial expression immediately darkened.
"Wu Jian, Wu Jian—for you all, he’s the golden child."
"Since that’s the case, why did you even give birth to me?"
"Next, you’ll probably tell me how I’m not as good as Zhang Yu, not as good as Dad’s daughter from his first marriage. She’s already a twelfth-grader, ranked first in the entire liberal arts year."
"And me? My grades were failing by elementary school."
"Constantly causing trouble at school, making you all lose face."
Wu Min had been pampered by Feng Min growing up, but the recent string of frustrations had left her completely unable to cope.
Her mood was already bad enough, and Feng Min’s endless nagging pushed her to the breaking point. There was no way she could suppress her anger any longer; she lashed out with a torrent of complaints.
Things had already been tense between Feng Min and Wu Hao due to Wu Min’s behavior, yet here the girl was, refusing to be understanding in the slightest, causing a public scene instead.
Feng Min lost her composure and slapped Wu Min several times. "You’re way too spoiled."
"Go home and write a self-reflection letter, then start working through your assignments. All you ever do is eat well and dress nicely, ignoring your schoolwork."
"In class, you chat nonstop. At this rate, you won’t even make it to high school—graduating middle school will be a stretch."
"With such an unpromising future, you still expect fancy food and clothes? Keep dreaming."
"Go home." Feng Min grabbed Wu Min and dragged her away. "You’ve really overstepped your bounds."
Feng Min had already lost face long ago, so at this point, she simply stopped caring and let things unravel completely.
Wu Min’s teacher, classmates, and their parents watched the mother and daughter’s explosive interaction, stunned into silence.
As Wu Min’s homeroom teacher, she’d interacted with Feng Min quite a lot in the past and always thought of her as a refined woman. She never imagined her behaving like this.
As for Wu Min, her true nature was just as surprising.
Wu Min’s classmates didn’t like her, and seeing her behave this way cemented their feelings. They had already decided to spread the word about how she really was.
Meanwhile, Feng Min and Wu Min were too caught up in venting their frustrations to remember the audience still standing around.
Li Cuifen happened to visit the school today to check on a sick colleague and was on her way home when she stumbled upon this scene. At first, she thought they looked familiar, but she quickly realized it was Feng Min.
From the content of their shouting, Li Cuifen was able to confirm that this was indeed Wu Hao’s wife and daughter.
Watching them embarrass themselves so publicly gave Li Cuifen immense satisfaction.
She hadn’t planned to stick around, but now there was no way she was missing this. When she got home, she made sure to tell Zhang Yu all about it.
