Chapter 898: Chapter 899 Toxic Fatherly Love 31
When Wu Hao got home, he saw Feng Min furiously yelling at Wu Min.
Wu Min wore a long face, on the verge of tears but holding them back. "What’s going on this time?"
"Ask her." Though she said this, Feng Min still handed the test paper in her hand to Wu Hao to look at.
"Look, this is your daughter’s grade."
"She hasn’t even made it to middle school yet, and this is her score."
"How will she get into high school?" Feng Min fumed at the thought, "Every time you’re supposed to study, you start making demands—bathroom breaks, snacks, drinks."
"Every time I talk to you about this, you act like this." Feng Min’s headache only worsened. "Since you’re back now, and you tell me not to blow up on our daughter, then you handle it."
Feng Min was done. If she kept going, she’d really lose it.
Wu Hao looked at the test paper full of red crosses and sighed helplessly. "Sweetheart, how could you answer like this?"
With just a glance, Wu Hao could confidently say the test wasn’t too difficult; there was no reason for such terrible results.
This only indicated one thing: Wu Min really wasn’t focusing on her studies. "Xiao Min, I don’t expect top marks from you, but you need to at least score passing grades."
Wu Hao had thought before, if Zhang Yu could get into high school, and her grades were considered decent, there was no way the child he and Feng Min raised could have such poor results.
"I don’t know which high school Zhang Yu got into, but at least she managed to get into one. You, at the very least, should go to high school too."
No matter what, their kid couldn’t perform worse than Zhang Yu.
Wu Min mentioned the name of a high school. "That’s the school she’s attending. Her grades are great—she’s already ranked first in the liberal arts class."
"What?" Wu Hao hadn’t expected Wu Min to know which school Zhang Yu attended, let alone her grades.
"How... how do you know?" Wu Hao had been trying to get this information for ages with no success, and yet Wu Min had it.
"Mom told me. She was just mad at me earlier, saying I embarrassed her because my grades weren’t as good as Zhang Yu’s." Wu Min pouted and repeated Feng Min’s earlier tirade verbatim.
Feng Min, simmering in anger in another room, still perked up her ears to listen. She wanted to know how Wu Hao would handle disciplining Wu Min.
What she didn’t expect was to hear Wu Min blurt out Zhang Yu’s school and grades.
Feng Min’s face instantly darkened. She had deliberately kept this information from Wu Hao to prevent him from doting on Zhang Yu once he learned of her stellar performance.
She figured this secret wouldn’t reach Wu Hao, or at the very least, he’d find out only after Zhang Yu graduated and turned out no better than Liu Hui—a useless companion with mediocre results.
But things didn’t go as she planned. Liu Hui, that worthless guy, not only failed to win Zhang Yu’s favor but also managed to inspire her to drastically improve her grades.
Wu Hao was dumbfounded. He hadn’t anticipated that Zhang Yu had been admitted to a decent high school, let alone that her grades were excellent.
"How... how did your mom find out?" Wu Hao wasn’t about to believe Feng Min learned this accidentally.
Wu Min thought Wu Hao already knew which high school Zhang Yu attended and had only been unaware of her ranking. She stammered, "Dad, I... I don’t know."
Wu Min didn’t dare look at Wu Hao’s current expression—it was utterly terrifying. After a moment’s thought, she said, "Dad, I just remembered, I still have homework to do."
Better to leave the adults to handle their own issues. As a kid, it wasn’t her place to meddle.
Wu Min promptly made her exit, leaving behind a puzzled Wu Hao.
Watching Wu Min flee, Wu Hao realized that Feng Min and the others knew much more about Zhang Yu than he did.
Standing in the living room, Wu Hao suddenly let out a bitter laugh. "I’m... I’m such an idiot. A complete fool."
He had initially planned to confront Feng Min about why such a big matter had been kept from him, but after some thought, he decided against it.
How could he confront her? Would Feng Min even give him a straight answer? Of course not. She’d probably find some way to turn the tables on him.
In the bedroom, Feng Min was restless, bracing herself for Wu Hao to storm in and interrogate her. She was already coming up with ways to explain herself.
But what she hadn’t expected was that when Wu Hao entered the room, he didn’t even look at her. He simply headed to bed to rest.
Could it be that he was planning to settle scores later? Feng Min still felt uneasy.
Wu Hao noticed Feng Min’s apprehension but had no intention of explaining anything. He turned over and went to sleep.
Seeing him act so calmly, Feng Min decided to let it go too. Tomorrow was another workday, and rest was a priority. Otherwise, how would she manage?
Now that he knew which school Zhang Yu attended, Wu Hao began to inquire about her situation.
It was truly shocking. The more he learned, the more he realized how remarkable Zhang Yu’s turnaround had been. In just one year, her average grades had skyrocketed to excellence.
Wu Hao didn’t know what Wu Jian’s future academic performance would be like. Boys often developed later, so chances were, he’d end up doing well.
As for Wu Min, Wu Hao had already given up on her. Ever since elementary school, failing grades had been her norm. Now in middle school, her results were even worse.
Wu Hao blamed Wu Min’s poor grades on Feng Min, deciding it was her lack of intelligence that produced such a dim-witted child.
"At least she’s pretty," Wu Hao muttered to himself. This was his only consolation; otherwise, he couldn’t imagine what Wu Min’s future would hold.
Now that he knew Zhang Yu could potentially get into a good university, Wu Hao’s thoughts began to stir again.
In the past, his calculations involving Zhang Yu had been about money and property. Now, of course, those motives remained, but he was also thinking further ahead: Zhang Yu’s excellent grades could lead to a stable job in the public sector.
Once Wu Jian graduated and entered the workforce, Zhang Yu could help him climb the ranks.
Wu Hao was plagued by concerns. When the twins were born, he was already in his thirties.
By the time Wu Jian graduated from university and entered society, Wu Hao would be in his fifties, nearing the end of his career.
Without reaching a significant position by then, paving the way for Wu Jian would be difficult. But if Zhang Yu were around, she could lend Wu Jian a hand.
These thoughts filled Wu Hao with excitement. He resolved to mend his relationship with Zhang Yu.
He had to reconcile with her. Calming his excitement, Wu Hao began thinking about how to proceed.
Soon, he came up with a plan: he’d go to her school. A young girl, seeing her estranged father after so long, couldn’t possibly remain indifferent.
Last time, he had been too hasty, and Li Cuifen had meddled, leading to Zhang Yu’s resentment toward him.
