Chapter 726: Chapter 727 Freeloading Man 12_1
Chiang Yi stared at the report card in his hand, and even though he had mentally prepared himself, he knew his final exam scores weren’t good.
But he truly hadn’t expected it to be this disastrous, falling out of the top five in his class and almost dropping out of the top ten.
As for his science ranking in the whole grade, he had plummeted to within the top 120, which was a huge gap from being promoted to the advanced class.
Chiang Yi’s heart was pounding, with such results, despite having been sick before, he anticipated there was no way to properly get through this ordeal.
What now? Chiang Yi felt a darkness before his eyes, certain that he’d be reprimanded by his parents upon returning home, and he could guess the upcoming winter break would definitely be rough.
Hearing that Song Lei had even hired a tutor, although he hadn’t heard of the teachers she mentioned,
he could tell from the homeroom teacher’s expression that the tutors Song Lei had hired must be very good, and undoubtedly, their fees wouldn’t be cheap.
If he could study under those teachers during the winter break, his scores would definitely improve significantly.
If possible, he could attend classes at Song Lei’s home, after all, teaching one student or two shouldn’t make much of a difference.
But how to broach the subject—that really became the issue. Chiang Yi truly regretted now; otherwise, he could continue working on problems set by prestigious schools and attend tutoring sessions by famous teachers.
The result was now out of his reach, he was truly unhappy—very unhappy.
The homeroom teacher then distributed the winter break homework, "Don’t just play during the winter break, study hard."
All the teachers knew that once the holidays began, expecting them to really study hard was utterly unrealistic.
"After school begins, there will also be a start-of-term test," the homeroom teacher added before preparing to leave, "Lastly, happy winter break."
After Song Lei packed her exercise books and winter break homework into her backpack, she readied herself to retreat home.
Today was probably the last comfortable day before the start of daily tutoring classes tomorrow.
Thinking of the manageable amount of winter break homework, she decided to start on it as soon as she got home. Otherwise, between make-up classes and drilling practice problems, it was really exhausting.
Song Lei, with her backpack in tow, swiftly made her way out, while her classmates began to discuss, "Song Lei’s family is quite rich."
"Definitely rich, otherwise she wouldn’t have spent so much when pursuing Chiang Yi."
Chiang Yi’s expression darkened, feeling very annoyed. There was no need to bring up Song Lei at all, let alone add his name into the mix.
In the past, everyone might have tread lightly around him, but now, seizing the opportunity to mock Chiang Yi, they definitely wouldn’t let it pass by.
Gathering his belongings quickly, Chiang Yi spoke, "Let’s go, to the internet cafe?"
Since it wouldn’t be easy to get out during the winter break, it was better to enjoy the last bit of freedom and have some computer fun.
"Sure, to the internet cafe." Regardless of their grades, now in their second year of high school, their families would definitely push them to study.
The others too grabbed their backpacks and dispersed, some going to browse bookstores for exercise books, others going out to play, but everyone found companions to join them.
No matter where they were headed, one topic they would definitely discuss was Song Lei.
Of course, what they were more interested in was how, under the guidance of such excellent home tutors, her performance might skyrocket after a winter break of intense study.
With Song Lei’s final exam results dropping like a bombshell, Banker was simultaneously very pleased, having bet on scores both precisely right and not far off.
Banker felt extraordinary glee, considering Song Lei quite remarkable, having lived through two instances of him clearing out all the bets—truly thrilling.
Considering Song Lei was spending the entire winter break studying intensively at home under one-on-one guidance from prestigious school teachers, her improvement was expected to be substantial.
People were discussing whether Song Lei might enter the advanced class after the final exams of the second year.
As for this wager, participants were certainly enthusiastic, and even though some had already gone on holiday, there were still people who found Banker’s home to place their bets.
Some people were leaving messages for Banker on QQ to place bets, making sure to reveal their identities.
Such commotion didn’t go unnoticed in the net cafe where Chiang Yi and others were surfing the internet.
One of Chiang Yi’s good friends looked around—some were gaming, others chatting—and then peered at Chiang Yi beside him, finding him staring at the computer screen.
Just a glance at the computer, and what caught his eye was Song Lei’s chat window, "Do you plan to contact her?"
Clearly, this guy used to act as if he didn’t care about Song Lei’s comings and goings, but now, it seemed he was filled with regret.
The friend curled his lip—noting the regret—where was this attitude before, "If you wanted to apologize, you should have done so earlier."
"The longer you drag it out, the more passive you become," the friend whispered.
Chiang Yi hadn’t expected his friend to catch that, and his expression immediately soured.
"I, I..." Being friends since kindergarten, Chiang Yi knew too well that plenty of things couldn’t be concealed.
"Back then, so many people said Song Lei would never be able to resist chasing you, but she declared she wouldn’t and didn’t."
"If she had become dejected, everyone would have just said she was too proud for her own good, but look at her now."
"Everyone’s saying how much Song Lei has changed after parting ways with you; I think so too."
"It’s only me who’s become the butt of everyone’s jokes." Even though his friends were immersed in chatting and gaming, Chiang Yi worried they might overhear something.
These people were blabbermouths; he had actually made quite a few remarks about Song Lei, some of which were said just for the sake of his pride.
And now these blabbermouths had gone around spreading those remarks; Chiang Yi didn’t want unproven stories about him to stir up more gossip.
If they succeeded this time, Chiang Yi knew the chances between him and Song Lei weren’t great.
They found a secluded corner to chat, where Chiang Yi shared his various frustrations, "I’d like to, sure."
"But I do have my pride," the haughty Chiang Yi was indeed used to Song Lei always revolving around him.
And now it seemed the wheel of fortune was about to turn, he would have to be the one fawning over her.
Chiang Yi could already guess what the people around would say, which would basically smear him in the mud.
The more Chiang Yi thought about it, the more agitated he became, "Forget it, I’ll just focus on my homework at home during the winter break."
"I plan to go to the bookstore to buy books tomorrow. Are you coming?" Chiang Yi decided to come clean.
He really wished he could keep the matter to himself, but the truth was, what can be hidden for a while can’t be hidden forever.
"I’m thinking of attending a cram class," Chiang Yi shared his thoughts, "I want to get into a prestigious university."
His friend laughed, "Who doesn’t want to get into a prestigious university?"
"Don’t rush it, stay steady; if you panic, do you think you can still absorb anything?"
After listening, Chiang Yi actually had been contemplating whether Song Lei would be moved if he asked her out alone.
Before, when they hung out, it was always as part of a group, and he had never taken Song Lei out alone.
The reason they used to include Song Lei in their outings was actually to make her pay the bill; otherwise, they would have had to cover their own entertainment expenses, and they just didn’t have that kind of money.
They used to hang out wherever it was fun with little concern about the expenses, since it wasn’t their own money being spent.
But now when they go out, it’s all on their own dime, so how to have fun?
