Chapter 657: Chapter 658 Sister Like Mother 75_1

Huang Man had no clue about any of this; she had always assumed that Zhao Mei and Tian Zhiguo were married.

After all, she was busy, busy studying, busy preparing for the TOEFL exam, and once her TOEFL scores were out, she would be busy applying to colleges.

Though she had been submitting articles for publication to earn money all these years, she had spent all the money on buying houses.

Watching the housing prices rise, Huang Man felt so happy, as this meant she could go abroad for her studies, even if she didn’t get a full scholarship, she would still be able to support herself.

Of course, if possible, getting a full scholarship would be the best.

There were many people who went abroad for further studies after graduating from university; everyone was studying for the TOEFL, taking the IELTS, and of course, those who were on good terms would discuss where to study.

Huang Man applied to Stanford and MIT, with the former being the university where Zhao Lei was currently enrolled.

It had to be said that his father treated him very well; knowing that he had been accepted into this university, he made a big move by rewarding him with a large house near the school, and of course, a car was also arranged.

If Huang Man went to Stanford, she wouldn’t have to rent a house, as Zhao Lei had said she could stay there.

Huang Man was certainly tempted; after all, rent occupied a large portion of the expenses for an international student.

As for doing household chores, that wasn’t a problem; trading labor for accommodation and food was definitely a good deal.

In her anticipation, she finally received the admission letter from Stanford, as well as a notice of a full scholarship.

Huang Man quickly went to get her visa processed and put all her rental properties in the care of an agency.

The agency had been working with her for several years; her real estate rentals truly began through this agency, and whenever there was an issue with a property, they would help resolve it.

Seeing the thick stack of property ownership certificates, the agency was aware that Huang Man had many properties; these were no small figures if sold.

"Thank you for your help." She planned to come back once a year in the future. Though the agency was reliable, she couldn’t fully trust them without regular check-ins.

The agent would never say they were too busy, "We also make money from this."

"We both benefit," Huang Man said, looking at the thick stack of photocopied property deeds, her heart heavy with sorrows unknown to others.

The agent thought all these properties were hers, and if possible, she wished it were so.

But the problem was that she didn’t know if even a third of these properties truly belonged to her; the rest were Zhao Lei’s.

Even though Zhao Lei wasn’t exactly a favored son, it was undeniable that Father Zhao was quite generous in this regard.

Going to America to study, everything from a house to a car was arranged, and even a more than adequate monthly allowance was provided.

Never mind, she thought, she was about to cling to a thicker thigh soon.

She gradually finished preparing for her departure in Capital City, and the day to leave finally came.

Many university graduation ceremonies can be described as tearful events because once people graduate, the chances of seeing each other again are slim; everyone goes their separate ways.

Many of Huang Man’s university classmates had applied to study abroad, and were now spread across several schools. There were a few going to Stanford with her, but she didn’t have much of a relationship with them.

Mainly because Huang Man was always busy, busy making money, busy studying for her English exams, busy with her studies, and busy participating in various activities.

And the rest, indeed, were also quite similar; everyone was busy, and as computer science students, they were somewhat socially anxious. Even if they wanted to interact, communication never really took off.

For instance, she had thought since they were all going to Stanford, they might need to look out for one another, so she inquired about their departure plans, but she never received a response.

Huang Man didn’t know what they were thinking, whether they didn’t want to leave with her or had other plans, but in any case, she would go at her own pace.

As soon as the graduation ceremony was over, she was ready to pack her bags and leave, ready to get a head start on adapting to the language environment over there.

Moreover, the most important thing was that Zhao Lei had already started a business and was currently in a situation where he was short of hands, in need of free labor.

When Huang Man received the distress call, what else could she do, given that she had promised to invest in Zhao Lei’s venture if he ever started one?

Fortunately for now, Zhao Lei wasn’t unreliable enough to ask Huang Man for money without disclosing the specifics of the project.

Huang Man’s roommates had also packed their bags, ready to leave one by one tomorrow.

But unlike Huang Man who was going straight abroad, they were all going home first, since they didn’t know when they would come back, and the round-trip plane tickets were so expensive.

As for Huang Man going abroad immediately after graduation, they weren’t surprised, since she barely went home after she started studying in Capital City, not even during Spring Festival, as she worked to earn money.

When asked, she simply said her father had passed away, her brother had passed away, her sister was working elsewhere, and her mother had remarried.

Upon hearing this, everyone naturally assumed that it would be awkward for Huang Man to go home.

Huang Man knew they were probably thinking along the wrong lines, imagining her as a pitiful burden, but she didn’t bother to correct them.

Wasn’t she just a pitiful burden, even her biological parents didn’t want her?

Since her flight was in the evening, Huang Man bid farewell to her roommates one by one, finally carrying her luggage downstairs.

Some items had been mailed ahead of time, making Zhao Lei quite frustrated; in his eyes, they were worthless items that didn’t need to be shipped from home, as they could be bought locally.

When Huang Man confronted him about it, Zhao Lei finally shut up; after all, he wasn’t the one paying for the postage, so what was there to grumble about?

Standing at the dormitory door, looking at the room where she had lived for four years, she had her share of happiness and unhappiness here.

Too bad it was just a transit point, and she was about to depart.

As she passed by the magnetic card phone, remembering there was still money on the card, she called the village.

The village head hadn’t retired yet but was now taking a backseat as a college graduate had taken over as the new village head, waiting to hand over his duties and go back home.

When the village head received Huang Man’s call, he was thrilled, "Huang Man, you’re graduating from college, right?"

Huang Man was surprised that the village head remembered, and she responded, "Yes, I graduated from college yesterday, and I’m about to leave for America."

The village head was confused, not understanding why she was going there: "Are you going there for a trip or for work?"

Huang Man: "I was admitted to graduate school there, and I’m going to study abroad."

The village head hadn’t expected Huang Man to continue her studies and even go overseas: "Studying abroad must need a lot of money, right?"

The village head knew Zhao Mei wouldn’t care for Huang Man, remembering how she would rather support a man than look after Huang Man, and he sighed helplessly.

After a moment of thought, the village head said, "Girl, tell me your bank account, and I’ll send you some money, although it’s not much."

The village head knew that Huang Man had truly had a difficult journey and often sent study materials back to the village, really helping many of the children.

But how could Huang Man accept this money: "No need, village head, I got a scholarship, which covers tuition and living expenses."

Huang Man: "It’s enough for me to live there, please tell my mom for me that I won’t be coming back."

Huang Man: "When she turns 50, I will send her money."

She still remembered what she had promised; after all, it was no big deal, if she said she would send money, she would send it.
