Chapter 618: Chapter 619 Sister Like Mother 36_1
Huang Man had no idea that Zhao Mei had stirred up trouble again; she had just taken a minibus to the county town.
Although the minibus often picked up passengers along the way, due to the fare, many people still preferred to wait for the public bus.
So when she arrived at the entrance of the county high school, it was not very late.
By the time she got to the dormitory with her things, the noise from inside was clearly audible.
When Huang Man entered with her luggage, she found that, with only her missing, surprisingly, no one had cleaned up.
The people idly chatting, on seeing Huang Man’s arrival, sounded very displeased, "Huang Man, what’s the matter with you? Why have you only just got here?"
"Exactly, look at the dormitory, it hasn’t been cleaned, and we can’t even sit down."
As the complaints of the crowd reached her ears, Huang Man stuffed her bag into the cupboard, "So you all arrived, and rather than lifting a finger, you’d prefer to stand and wait for me to do the work?"
It seemed she was being bullied just as her former self had been easily pushed around, with no mercy shown.
"I’m informing you now that from this moment on, everyone has a responsibility for the dormitory’s cleanliness."
"We shall follow the duty roster as it was written."
"You..." Everyone initially thought that if they were forceful with Huang Man, she would immediately start cleaning.
But to their surprise, she turned the tables, making it clear that this was a task to be shared by everyone.
What? Hearing Huang Man say this, the others were naturally unhappy, "Huang Man, you’ve become quite arrogant, neglecting the dormitory’s cleanliness."
"It’s not a matter of neglect, but of everyone working together."
"Why should you all get away with doing nothing? If you have a problem with that, you can go talk to the teacher."
"See what the teacher has to say."
"And don’t even think of doing things like pouring water on my bed in the winter. After all, it’s a dorm we all share, and everyone should be treated equally."
Huang Man took a cloth to wipe down her bed, then proceeded to hang the bed curtains she had already prepared.
Under the gaze of everyone, she jumped onto her bed and began to read a book.
None of them had expected Huang Man to finish up by merely cleaning her own things, not doing any extra work.
The group exchanged glances, wondering what to do. Should they just give in like this?
If they conceded now, would they have any standing in front of her in the future?
Huang Man glanced at her watch, noting the time was getting late. She put her books and summer vacation homework into her bag, ready to head to class.
As they watched her pack her schoolbag to leave, they remembered that some of them hadn’t finished their summer vacation homework, counting on copying from Huang Man after school started.
They hadn’t anticipated her not arriving early and thus hadn’t managed to copy the assignments.
"Huang Man, your summer homework..."
"I’ve done it already. It’s getting late, I need to go to my class." Hmmph, each and every one of them wanting to borrow her notes while treating her poorly.
From now on, they should realize that asking for help or borrowing notes was out of the question.
Watching the current Huang Man, they thought, "She feels so unfamiliar."
"What’s happened to her?"
Was it really just a summer break they hadn’t seen her, that she now seemed so different?
Neither softness nor forcefulness worked on her now, leaving them unsure how to proceed.
They turned their eyes towards the dorm leader, whose attitude would determine how they should all treat Huang Man.
The leader had always refrained from speaking to Huang Man, considering that doing so would lower her own taste and class.
Seeing Huang Man’s attitude now, the leader was, of course, all kinds of unhappy.
With a cold face, the leader said, "She thinks she’s so amazing, huh?"
"She thinks she’s so capable, right?"
"She thinks she’s something without us, doesn’t she?"
"Let’s just ignore her and see what she does."
She didn’t believe that if everyone stopped paying attention to her, Huang Man would be able to keep going.
Everyone thought the leader’s suggestion was good. Huang Man knew that with her non-cooperation, these girls would definitely make a move.
But she hadn’t expected the move she had been waiting for to be like this, to be a cold war tactic.
Huang Man really didn’t know what to say. Such tactics were really effective against the average girl.
But for the current Huang Man, let it be a cold war. After all, without them, she felt much more relaxed.
Huang Man became completely solitary. Although her previous popularity was average, there were still girls who would eat with her for the sake of her schoolwork.
But now, whether it was all the girls in the dormitory or in the class, they all gave her the cold shoulder.
Regardless, the male admirers of the girls in her class also joined in, as if the whole class was giving Huang Man a cold war.
Not bad, Huang Man really admired this person. Their organizational ability was strong.
But it was still useless against her. Since they were all ignoring her, she would completely ignore them too.
Without anyone asking questions, she had much more free time. She breezed through homework, speedily finished exercise books, and then went back to the dorm at night to write novels.
Every morning, she would go for a run and memorize vocabulary. One could say she felt as relaxed as one could possibly feel.
She was relaxed, but the others were having a hard time. They often used to ask Huang Man for help.
But now, in order to make her give in, everyone stopped asking her questions, and the things they struggled with were piling up.
Huang Man remained a lone ranger as always, and yet her grades were still improving.
Although her previous grades had also been good, at least in the sciences she was ranked among the top 10 in the entire grade.
But in the recent quizzes, her grades were better than ever, almost perfect.
This made the teachers who were already satisfied with Huang Man even more pleased with her.
As for the others, their grades slipped, not least in the science rankings, provoking the head teacher to openly scold them in class.
At the same time, the head teacher didn’t forget to stoke resentment toward Huang Man, "Don’t think everyone’s grades dropped. But look at Huang Man—the same teacher taught all of you, yet her grades are still good."
"Now, look at yourselves," said the head teacher angrily. "Don’t think there won’t be a class split in senior year. After every monthly examination, classes will be arranged according to grades."
"How to explain this situation to your parents will be your responsibility."
"Don’t expect the teacher to speak for you." The head teacher stormed out.
The classroom fell silent. No one spoke, and no one did their homework; it was just that quiet.
Huang Man was unaffected. She picked up her homework and started working on it. As long as she made progress, that was enough.
Not bad, she thought. In this month’s exam, aim for the top three. The best way to strike at everyone was to show you’re unaffected and instead improve your grades step by step.
A long while later, someone spoke up, the words tinged with mockery, "Some people are just heartless, only looking out for themselves, not knowing how to help others."
Huang Man pretended she hadn’t heard and kept working on problems by herself. As long as no one named names, she acted as if she was unaware. Otherwise, once she reacted, people would say she was asking for it.
The original character wasn’t without help in the past, but what was the result? Wasn’t it true that as soon as someone instigated something, they treated her as an enemy?
