Chapter 607: Chapter 608 Sister Like Mother 25_1
When they heard the amount Huo Huo exclaimed, they were all shocked.
Huang Man, who was writing lesson plans inside the house, was also shocked.
She knew the three of them were quite capable of spending money lavishly, but she hadn’t expected them to be this extravagant.
Huang Man’s mouth hung open, "They can really splurge like that."
My God, I thought that without my intervention, the money would at least last for two years.
But to my surprise, I actually underestimated the speed at which they burned through money, "Will it last until I go to college?"
Knowing the money wouldn’t last long, she just hadn’t expected them to be such prodigal spenders.
Huang Lina, already furious about various things, became frantic when she heard that Zhao Mei had spent over ten thousand, "Mom, how could you spend so much money?"
"How did you spend that much?" She thought about how little money she had received herself, hmph, it was all spent by them.
"You say I am extravagant with money, but why don’t you say the same about yourselves, spending so lavishly."
"You can spend money whenever you like, but when it’s my turn, I have to go out and work," Huang Lina said angrily.
Even more agitated than Huang Xin, she loudly voiced her complaints.
"Why can other parents make money, and you can’t?" Although Huang Lina had no interest in studying, it didn’t stop her from finding Zhao Mei increasingly irksome.
Infuriated by Huang Lina’s reproach about why she didn’t work, Zhao Mei retorted, "I’ve been married to your father for so many years, and I’ve always worked."
"Now Dad’s no longer here." Huang Lina shouted bluntly, "No one will indulge you."
"Including my sister, she won’t indulge you either. Why can’t you realize your mistake?"
With the man gone and Huang Man not heeding her word, it could be said that this was Zhao Mei’s most unhappy affair, but she had no way to change her eldest daughter.
And then her good daughter seemed to think she wasn’t grieving enough, bringing this up in front of so many people—what a good daughter she was.
She really shouldn’t have indulged them, letting them turn into what they are now. If they ever really became rich, would they still treat her well?
Forget it, Zhao Mei completely gave up the idea; this was nothing but an unfilial child.
Watching her being criticized by everyone as an inadequate mother, accused of only caring about herself, buying pretty clothes, and lots of snacks just for her own consumption.
Having time to gossip about other families outside all day long.
"Huang Lina, you still have the nerve to criticize me. Why don’t you mention how much money you took from me?"
Zhao Mei sorrowfully recounted the money that her two children had taken from her over the days, leaving the onlookers stunned.
Some people had seen Huang Xin and Huang Lina spending money like water in the county town and gossiped upon their return that Huang Zhiqiang’s death had brought happiness to the entire family.
Only now did they realize just how recklessly these two children spent money. No matter how substantial the compensation was, it wouldn’t last long in their hands, and nobody was optimistic about it.
Huang Xin quickly did some math in his head, "You said you didn’t give Huang Lina much money, so how come it ended up being so much?"
Huang Xin couldn’t help but feel angry when he thought about how the money that should have been his had so easily gone to Huo Huo. "Mom, I don’t think you’re suited to..."
"Whether I’m suited to it or not is none of your business. This money was given to me, and you guys are grown children. If you can attend high school, I’ll support you. If your grades don’t allow you to continue your education, then go out and work," Zhao Mei replied, ignoring the dissatisfaction between her two children and went straight back to her room.
Seeing Zhao Mei return to her room, Huang Xin had no time to argue with Huang Lina. He rushed after her.
Li Na saw what he was doing, knew what he wanted to do, and didn’t want to miss out, so she followed suit and charged in after him.
The onlookers, seeing the Huang family members all heading back, wanted to follow them inside, but after a moment’s thought, they decided against it, especially since they saw Huang Man coming out.
In full view of them, Huang Man closed the yard gate. What if they weren’t careful and blurted out how much the compensation was? Wouldn’t there be someone who would be tempted?
Zhao Mei was about to close the door when she returned to her room, but Huang Xin, who had rushed over, prevented her from doing so. "Let’s talk."
He knew that if he kept up his high-handed approach, it wouldn’t end well for him. Zhao Mei would definitely not hand over the money. Now that she had the money in her hands, he had to coax her gently and amicably.
Since she couldn’t keep them out, Zhao Mei had to let them into the house. Seeing Huang Man, who had just closed the yard gate and was about to return to her room, "Li Na, this is a serious matter, come and discuss it with us."
Huang Man had originally not wanted to be involved, but after thinking it over, she decided it was better to listen in on their plans and stay informed.
Zhao Mei felt relieved when she saw Huang Man willing to listen in. Although she didn’t want to admit it, having her there at least could keep Huang Xin and the others in check.
Huang Xin glanced at Huang Man, wondering what her inclusion meant, while Huang Lina was a bit excited. She knew nobody could resist the allure of money.
"I’ll just listen, and as for how the money is arranged, I won’t be involved in any decisions," Huang Man said, seeing Huang Xin’s guardedness.
"This is compensation paid to me, and I absolutely won’t give any of it up. And you accuse me of being extravagant with money, as if you don’t spend just as recklessly," Zhao Mei cut straight to the point, sparing them no pleasantries and making her stance clear.
"As for the land, your father and I own shares of it. I’ll rent them out and keep the rent."
"How you manage your shares is your business. Whatever price you rent them out for, I won’t interfere." It wasn’t generosity spurning the money, but the need to safeguard what she currently had that was crucial.
Huang Xin was furious with Zhao Mei for pulling such a stunt, essentially giving money to Huang Lina. "Big sister, what do you plan to do with the land under your name?"
Did he expect her to give up her share? "My portion of the land will be managed by mom, and she’ll be responsible for any associated costs. It means I’m not going to work the fields anymore."
Knowing what Huang Xin and the others were thinking—believing the shares should be divided among them—Zhao Mei was overjoyed to hear the land would be under her management, since it meant a little extra money every year. Even if it wasn’t a lot, it was still money.
"But we need to sign an agreement. You manage the land—whether you farm it yourself or rent it out, I don’t care."
"But I won’t come back to work the land, and I won’t take on any of the taxes or fees," Huang Man was concerned that Zhao Mei might pocket the rent and leave her with the taxes.
"We need to sign an agreement for this?" Zhao Mei was taken aback, having not yet thought about taking advantage of Huang Man. She just felt that they were mother and daughter; why would they need to sign such a thing?
"Of course, we must sign. And about dad’s compensation money, I’ve given it some thought and we should sign an agreement for that too," Huang Man stood up, went back to her room, and came back with a few sheets of paper, quickly drafting two agreements.
"You all take a look, and if there’s no problem, Huang Xin, take a piece of carbon paper and copy it out. Everyone will sign," Huang Man insisted on everyone’s signatures.
"Everyone needs to sign because I’m truly scared by how fast you all spend money."
"It would be one thing if I were the one spending, but the problem is, I haven’t spent a dime."
