This really infuriated Zhao Mei, "People have no sympathy these days."

"You have money, you can go buy it yourself," one of the patients said coolly. "Plus, you have a broken leg and can’t walk."

"You can go out and buy food; you were even generous enough to give your son a hundred yuan."

"Didn’t your son take the money and promise to bring you lunch?" The other person certainly wasn’t about to offer her any food.

If they gave her something to eat, she might think it was right that they should, and perhaps even find fault with the quality of the food.

"Exactly," someone else chimed in, "you’re not poor, you can buy it yourself."

This wasn’t just a one-time thing—today was the son, tomorrow the younger daughter—judging by their demeanor, whether they would bring meals at all was in question.

But no one pitied her; she had brought this upon herself.

After being rebutted by several people, Zhao Mei was unhappy but powerless, and, huffing and puffing, got up to go out for food.

By this time, lunchtime was over, and few eateries were open outside. Even if there was food for sale, it was either something Zhao Mei disliked or overpriced.
