Chapter 556: Chapter 557 Sister Flowers Educated Youth 74_1
In Shen Xiaohui’s anticipation, the train finally pulled slowly into the terminal—Capital City Station.
As he stepped onto the platform, Shen Xiaohui almost burst into tears, "Finally, we’ve arrived."
Seeing Shen Xiaohui’s excitement, Shen Jie remained silent. It was better not to stir up someone’s emotions.
"We’ll talk about what comes next later." Right now, Shen Xiaohui didn’t think about the journey home in the summer, or the flavor on the train.
"The train must be quite uncomfortable in the summer," even though his mind told him not to ask, he couldn’t help himself.
"You’ll get used to it, since it’s always that smell, and you’re part of it too."
Recalling the smell they had when they first got off the train, the memory was still vivid for everyone, "Others may smell bad, but in truth, our own scent is no better."
"Brother, look at it another way. Think about it, you didn’t rest or eat well on the train,"
"so you look all haggard when you get off. Our parents would be so worried when they see you."
"When you’re at home, you’ll be treated very well, with good food and a good rest."
"Just look at me when I came back for the New Year, life was good, wasn’t it?" Shen Jie knew that Shen Xiaohui must be envious.
Shen Xiaohui was of course envious of Shen Jie’s treatment, but right now, he truly wasn’t envious; he was simply too exhausted.
After a brief pause, they followed the porters and walked out of the station where Huo Lei looked around and said, "I’ll hail a vehicle."
Watching Huo Lei’s retreating back, Shen Xiaohui wondered, "Has he never been to Capital City before?"
"I don’t know, but he can ask around. It’s impossible for him not to know what we know."
Huo Lei had extensive connections back home, so it was normal for him to know a thing or two.
Shen Xiaohui thought so too and stood quietly, marveling at the surrounding houses.
"Is this really Capital City?"
"It seems a bit run-down." What he didn’t say was, it felt almost the same as back home, the houses were pretty much the same.
Shen Jie swept a glance around, knowing that Capital City’s train station was still within the city limits, but not in a prosperous area.
"Capital City has its poor as well. These houses are for them. You can’t expect too much."
No matter what, these were houses in Capital City, possibly even with key primary schools attached.
"After all, they are Capital City residents," Dai Zhiqing also thought the houses weren’t great, but they were still in Capital City.
"That’s true." Everyone watched as Huo Lei got on a tricycle, followed by another one.
"Let’s load our luggage and settle in. I’ve decided we’ll stay at the Medical University guesthouse."
Of the eight in their group, only he was not attending Medical University; he was studying law at B University. He would have to figure things out on his own later.
"Great, we’ll rest well today and take a tour around Capital City tomorrow," although their first impression of Capital City was somewhat disappointing.
Yet it was Capital City, a place everyone had longed to visit for so long. It definitely deserved a tour.
Thinking they had plenty of time since they’d arrived early, they were surprised to find the university guesthouse had hardly any rooms left.
"How could there be so many people who came early?"
Everyone was puzzled, then it occurred to them that maybe people came early to look around.
Or perhaps they were coming from far away and wanted to arrive in advance to avoid missing the registration period.
The room had only four beds, a table with four thermoses on top, and two chairs. It was quite simple.
"I’m going to take a bath." Shen Jie really didn’t want to just lie down and rest; it felt too untidy.
"Are they open though?" When checking in, the receptionist mentioned the hot water supply times, and there was no supply during this period.
"Bathhouses, huh." Shen Jie knew that northern cities had bathhouses available.
Although there were no bathhouses in the South, she had been used to going to her parents’ workplace bathhouse for baths since she was a child, so it wasn’t uncomfortable for her.
"Okay, I’ll go ask them." Despite feeling a bit grossed out, Zhao Na had been on the train for several days and felt uncomfortable all over.
Shen Xiaohui and the others certainly had no objections to this suggestion, "That’s perfect. Let’s go have a good bath first, and then we can go out for a nice meal."
A bath was quite exhausting, making it the perfect time when one’s appetite was great to have a good meal.
"Shall we go for Capital City roast duck?" While sitting on the way to the bathhouse, everyone began discussing what to eat.
"I want to have hotpot."
Each person had their own opinion, and none could persuade the others.
"Alright, we’re not just staying in Capital City for a few days. We can go from one restaurant to another," someone said.
Don’t think that the few of them were just scraping by on their salaries; they hadn’t spared any effort in messing around with things from the mountains, like mushrooms, ginseng, and cured meats and such.
The goods from Shen Jie were sold through her family, while those from Dai Zhiqing and the others were sold through Zhao Yu’s connections.
He had joined the military and couldn’t possibly consume that much himself, nor was it feasible, but he knew a lot of people and had money at hand.
It could be said that they all lived quite decently, so they might as well make the most of their trip to Capital City, taking in the sights they wanted and indulging in the delicacies they craved.
Once school started, they would have to immerse themselves in their studies and might not have time to come out.
In the following days, before school began, they went to many places, even renting a couple of tricycles to go to the Great Wall.
Along the way, everyone discussed how magnificent the Great Wall would be, but when they arrived at the base of the Great Wall, they were stunned, "Is this the Great Wall?"
The tricycle drivers who had brought them nodded, confirming it was correct, and pointed to the nearby sign, "This is it."
Seeing the inscription about protecting cultural heritage, okay, it was indeed the Great Wall, just in a state of disrepair and looking rather desolate.
"Let it go, we’re already here; let’s climb up and take a look." It was still the Great Wall, after all.
They couldn’t just have come all this way from the downtown area in the early morning to glance at it and then go back.
"Right, we need to take photos." Huo Lei had somehow gotten hold of a camera from someone he knew and wanted to take some pictures.
"Let’s do it now." Since everyone had gotten up early, they weren’t in the best of spirits,
but they might not feel or look any better after coming down from the Great Wall later on. It was better to take the photos now.
Besides the disappointment of the Great Wall, many other sights left them underwhelmed.
As for the delicacies of Capital City, such as hotpot, everyone unanimously declared, "It’s not as good as the hotpot Shen Jie makes."
They had all tasted Shen Jie’s hotpot, and it was exceptional, definitely tastier than what the restaurants offered.
Shen Jie’s hotpot? Shen Xiaohui looked at Shen Jie discontentedly, wondering why he, her own brother, hadn’t had a chance to try it.
"Look, I didn’t either. I don’t have the equipment," she defended.
"And I don’t have the seasonings." In the Northeast, she had prepared for quite some time to gather all the ingredients for that one meal.
"Actually, if you think the hotpot here doesn’t taste good, it’s not just because of the base. The main issue is that the meat isn’t tasty." It wasn’t that the local lamb was bad, there was just a noticeable difference.
"When we eat lamb back home, it comes from the locals’ homes, where the sheep definitely roam around the mountains a lot and get plenty of exercise."
These weren’t sheep from confined feedlots; they were put out in the morning and brought back in the evening, ensuring ample exercise and great flavor.
"True," everyone sighed helplessly, admitting that even the chicken meat and such they had eaten back home tasted better than what was available here.
"This is the loss we suffer from returning to the city."
