Chapter 544: Chapter 545 Sister Flowers Educated Youth 62_1
The exams had ended, and everyone was eagerly anticipating when the results would come out, as only with the results would they know whether they had been admitted to a university.
Beyond comparing answers, the most discussed topic was that Shen Jie had performed poorly in this exam.
Some did raise doubts, after all, no one had asked Shen Jie, nor had anyone compared answers with her, so how could they be sure that she had done badly?
Unfortunately, whenever such doubts were voiced, they were immediately shot down with the reasoning that Shen Jie looked very upset after the last exam.
What was more, somebody had mentioned in front of her that she hadn’t performed well, and she didn’t say a word in rebuttal.
"If she had done well, wouldn’t she have refuted it?"
"Everyone says she did poorly, and Shen Jie has been staying indoors all day long. Wouldn’t she have heard if she hadn’t stepped out, hadn’t they heard?"
"Nor did we hear them refute it."
In summary, all these signs seemed to prove one thing: that Shen Jie had definitely not done well. If she had, she certainly would have rebutted.
So, everyone began to assume that Shen Jie had indeed done poorly, but she didn’t really care about these discussions.
She was busy preparing jerky, sausages, cured meats, and fish, among other things.
She was confident that she would achieve good results this time, strong enough to leave the farm, so she had a lot to prepare.
Unfortunately, they hadn’t received much ginseng last year, only a few roots were decades old, the oldest being no more than eighty years.
Though it was a bit disappointing, there was nothing to be done about it; even on the edges of the Northeast Forest Farm, one shouldn’t expect to easily come across century-old ginseng.
It was said that even within the farm, finding a century-old ginseng was quite a task.
The one consolation for Shen Jie was that she had a good relationship with the local ginseng farmers. They promised to notify her if they got any good ginseng in the future, and all Shen Jie could do was hope they would remember their promise.
The Zhao Family sisters couldn’t be certain if they would be admitted to university, but they had begun to prepare whatever they could just in case.
You could say that in those days, they were truly swamped with all sorts of tasks, and as for the rumors and gossip outside, they let them swirl as they might.
After all, once the results were out, there would be no way for those people to laugh anymore, and it would be interesting to see how their faces got slapped.
Soon enough, the results were announced. People eager to know their scores clogged the gates of the administrative center early on.
The crowd surrounding the entrance to the center even startled the leaders, who kept broadcasting that the results would be distributed to each unit.
The leader’s message was that the results would definitely be conveyed to everyone, and there was no need to congest the place.
But people were eager to learn their scores as soon as possible, as this would set their minds at ease.
Luckily, the center understood everyone’s anxiety and instantly posted the scores in the form of a public bulletin as soon as they were received.
The director and secretary were also eager to know how the farm’s youth fared in the exams they had taken.
Though they hadn’t sat for the exams, they still knew the full marks.
Looking at the scores on the list, "First in Science with 390 points?"
"So only ten points deducted?" This score was indeed very high.
The communicator hummed in response, "City’s top scorer in Science, third in the province."
"Not bad at all," the director and secretary were both excited to hear that someone from their jurisdiction had scored so well.
Although it wasn’t their child, at least it was within their sphere of responsibility.
"The second place got 388 points, only two points off?" The director continued to read, surprised at the exceptionally good score the second-ranked Science student had received.
Both the director and the secretary were thinking that the next time they were in the city for a meeting, they didn’t know how many envious gazes would be directed at them.
The secretary leaned in to look at the names, staring for a while, "Shen Jie, isn’t that a girl’s name?"
"To think she could score second in Science," the secretary was astonished.
Girls were said to struggle with Science, but here was one that proved them wrong.
"They’re all from the 11th brigade, aren’t they?" The director busied himself for a while and noticed that many from that brigade scored well.
The clerk was privy to some details and chimed in casually, "In their brigade, Shen Jie and Huo Lei have quite a lot of high school textbooks and study materials. As soon as they heard about the reinstatement of the college entrance examination, they offered up their books for all."
While many were high school graduates or students, having left school for so many years, who could remember much?
Those who started studying only after they got the books were late. Those who already had their books had been studying for some time, making good progress.
The director remembered Shen Jie, "The one who ranked first and second?"
"Right. There were seven of them, and the other five also did quite well."
While they didn’t know the cutoffs for university admissions yet, just the high scores they had achieved gave confidence that they would be admitted to good universities.
While people inside debated Shen Jie and her friends’ scores, those outside waiting for the results were astounded by the top two in Science.
Because of concerns about name repetition, there were unit identifiers next to the names, and when they saw the first and second place in Science, many were dumbfounded.
After all, thanks to some people’s influence, everyone knew that Shen Jie’s academic performance was poor and that she definitely couldn’t get into a university.
But now the results were out, and they were as good as they could be. If such scores weren’t enough to get into university, then probably very few would.
"Wasn’t it said that Shen Jie’s grades were bad?"
"Exactly. If being ranked second in the city and tenth in the province isn’t considered good..."
"Who’s spreading rumors out there?"
"Really, this is too much."
Some people were definitely not happy, quite unhappy in fact, because with such great results, it was clear their notes had to be excellent.
If they had known earlier, couldn’t they have asked to reserve notebooks and textbooks from them?
Considering the next college entrance examination was in July, returning to the original examination period, with a bit more effort and these superb study aids in hand, who would worry about not achieving excellent scores?
Some had thought of this already and were rushing towards Shen Jie’s family at top speed.
What they were thinking, the administrative center had also immediately considered, and compared to the people hustling by foot or bicycle, the center’s response was much simpler.
Commander Guo was dealing with paperwork in the office, feeling somewhat anxious about how many people would be admitted to university this time.
When he received the notification from the center, he was still in a daze, knowing from the number of study materials and textbooks that had come from Shen Jie and her group that they must have been reading regularly.
Despite the rumors circulating in the brigade that Shen Jie had failed, Commander Guo had never believed them. He was convinced that Shen Jie would achieve a good result.
And as he thought, Shen Jie did get a remarkable result, second in the city, tenth in the province, which was nothing short of astonishing.
As for the instructions broadcast over the loudspeaker by the leaders, Commander Guo naturally followed them—such superb study and revision resources had to be preserved.
