Chapter 505: Chapter 506 Sister Flowers Educated Youth 23_1
Though the village was said to be next door, walking there in reality meant that it wasn’t actually that close.
The pace of the four wasn’t slow, but by the time they reached the village, they had already spent over an hour.
It was only when Shen Jie saw Huo Lei pull a watch out of his trouser pocket that she realized he even wore one.
Given that the family income was decent, only Shen Jianshe had a watch.
Her estimation of Huo Lei’s family’s circumstances rose again, but Shen Jie didn’t think much of it; he was just a comrade from the farm, after all.
Once the college entrance exam was reinstated, everyone would go their separate ways, and the likelihood of staying in touch probably wasn’t that great.
Perhaps even more likely was that, before the reinstatement of the exams, Huo Lei and the other would have already returned to the city.
Zhao Yu, of course, knew that Huo Lei had a watch, but his friend always kept it hidden, hardly ever taking it out in front of others.
To his surprise, there he was, pulling it out so casually in front of Shen Jie and the others, which was a bit odd.
Zhao Yu said nothing about his friend’s behavior.
After entering the village, Zhao Yu asked a kid for directions and, in exchange for a piece of candy, the child led them to the carpenter’s home.
Carrying sweets with him, Shen Jie observed that Zhao Yu was quite attentive; it was rare for men to carry candy with them when they went out.
Indeed, if Zhao Yu was just a carefree boy, it was unlikely that he and Huo Lei would have had such fun together.
Everyone has a hidden nature, Shen Jie mused as she observed the quiet Northeastern village.
Indeed, although it wasn’t the busy farming season, people still had to work in the fields to earn work points; otherwise, they wouldn’t get paid.
"Oh right, we don’t have any wood," Feng Dan suddenly remembered a major issue as they walked; they didn’t have any wood on hand and weren’t sure if the carpenter would be willing to help make furniture.
"Pay for it," Zhao Yu responded, turning around, "Some people in the farm have wood."
"Besides, we are educated youth from the farm; the nearby villages all know how to give us a quote."
Not to mention the new educated youth; even if the older ones brought out wood, the surrounding villages would inquire where the wood came from, whether it was harvested or purchased.
Right, if a problem can be solved with money, then it’s not a problem, Shen Jie noted the village’s streets were quite clean.
Much cleaner than the village the original owner went to as an educated youth; the difference in sanitation was stark.
The other village’s hygiene was so bad that she didn’t even want to criticize it; it was filthy.
Here, even if there were just a few scallions planted by the doorway, they were orderly, giving a comfortable impression.
"Grandpa Jiang, Grandpa Jiang," the child called several times at the doorway before leading everyone inside.
Shortly after, a man in his sixties emerged from the neighboring house.
Seeing the group, Old Jiang Tou recalled what a few educated youth from the farm had said about expecting new additions.
As a craftsman, Old Jiang Tou naturally hoped for more educated youth to come to the farm.
The arrival of new educated youth meant they would need more things, and Old Jiang Tou gave the child a piece of candy, thanking him.
Upon receiving the sweet, the child beamed with happiness; a candy from the young man and one from Grandpa Jiang meant he had an extra piece to enjoy, how could he not be delighted?
"You’re the new educated youth, what do you need?" Old Jiang asked, not sure how they got the information.
Nor did he know if they were aware of his pricing standards, but he raised his prices a bit more anyway.
"This is something I made for someone, you can take a look," Old Jiang said confidently about his craftsmanship.
In the surrounding villages, no carpenter’s skills were superior to his.
The old master didn’t talk much; he wasn’t a smooth talker, so he just showed them the samples and let them decide whether they wanted anything made.
Without boasting about his skills, he let his products do the talking, and Shen Jie truly appreciated that kind of person.
All four were genuinely impressed by the old master’s skill.
Especially the little stools he made, "We must have one."
"By the way, Grandpa Jiang, could you make a small table like this?" asked Shen Jie. A large table wouldn’t be feasible; such an expensive item wouldn’t please anyone if used carelessly.
But a small table, like a computer desk from the future, could be made and taken with them when they returned to the city.
Even if going to university, it could be conveniently placed on a bed.
Shen Jie simply made her request, and Old Jiang initially didn’t care; he was a carpenter with many years of experience, what couldn’t he make?
A young girl could hardly come up with anything impressive, but unexpectedly, she really knew what she was talking about.
Feng Dan truly liked the style of the table Shen Jie described, "That’s quite nice."
It could be folded up, placed right by one’s feet, and become a personal small table to take away once returning to the city.
Indeed, quite nice, Feng Dan decided that he would definitely make one for himself later.
If it proved useful, he would make another and send it back home.
With a crowded home and limited space, homework time always involved squeezing in together.
Having such a small table would mean being able to do homework on the bed.
Though Old Jiang had never made such a table before, his years of experience told him exactly how to do it.
"I should be able to make it by tomorrow."
"If it’s useful, I won’t charge you for labor on this or anything you order in the future. I’ll just charge for the wood," Old Jiang declared, as he also had to buy his lumber.
Shen Jie had mentioned the item out of a personal need, not expecting such a favorable advantage.
"That’s not necessary, just this one time," Shen Jie demurred, unwilling to take advantage of the offer.
Old Jiang shook his head, "Although I’ve not made this before, I know that once it’s done, it’ll definitely sell well."
He wasn’t sure if the villagers would like it, but one thing he was certain of was that educated youth would love it.
Many didn’t have tables in their rooms, making dining and writing difficult, and few were willing to make tables due to the high cost.
But with such a small table, it was likely the educated youth would be very fond of it.
Seeing Old Jiang’s insistence, Shen Jie could only accept.
"If it works out, I’ll want to make one too," Zhao Yu quickly stated.
"Me too," Feng Dan naturally supported his friend.
"And me," Huo Lei followed suit; with such a table, he could do whatever he wanted.
See, the items were sold even before being made, with three small tables already destined for new owners; Old Master Jiang was very optimistic about this small table’s future.
The group ordered quite a few items and agreed to return the following afternoon to check on the small table.
