Chapter 502: Chapter 503 Sister Flowers Educated Youth 20_1

By the time the four of them left the train station, they saw that many trucks had already stopped at the entrance, some people were boarding, and some vehicles had already departed.

But there were still many people in the station plaza, "So many people."

Shen Jie’s mouth fell open. On the way north, she knew people kept boarding because they were enrolling in schools sporadically, but she truly hadn’t expected there to be this many people.

Huo Lei and Zhao Yu glanced over the crowd and surveyed the area, "Let’s find a place to rest first."

"With so many people, who knows when it will be our turn." If it had been just the two of them, Huo Lei would have rushed to the front.

But now with two girls added to the mix, Huo Lei didn’t feel comfortable just leaving them behind.

"No rush, let them board first." After all, arriving earlier or later didn’t make much of a difference.

And once over there, with all the crowding... all Shen Jie could think about was whether there would be a chance to bathe.

At this moment, she truly envied the boys; for them, a simple river was enough to clean themselves.

The four found a place out of the sun and sat down quietly, watching vehicles come and go while the number of people in the plaza gradually dwindled.

Seeing that there weren’t many people left, Huo Lei worried they might be left behind. Then they would have to walk to the farm, which would be a huge loss.

Standing inside the empty truck bed, Shen Jie took a deep breath. Although there were still quite a few people, at least it wasn’t overcrowded.

Having not bathed for several days, Shen Jie really didn’t dare to breathe deeply, for fear of being overwhelmed by the odors.

The expressions on Huo Lei and the others were also not great; everyone’s body odors were unpleasant.

"I wonder how we’re going to bathe." Feng Dan brought up a serious concern, that of bathing.

Zhao Yu felt relieved, "Once we get there, we can just swim in the river."

Don’t ask him why he’s so sure, the answer is brains are a useful thing.

Feng Dan looked at Zhao Yu disapprovingly, "You’re really too much."

"I think the farm must have considered it." With so many people at the farm, they should have some basic facilities, right?

"I hope there’s a place to bathe." Feng Dan prayed incessantly.

Someone nearby saw their worried looks and reassured them, "Don’t worry, each brigade in the farm has a public bath, it just costs money to use."

A public bath, and it costs money? That wasn’t a problem at all. Back home, they would pay for bath tickets to bathe at the textile factory’s facilities during winter.

Fortunate enough to have the factory’s own bathhouse, the bathing fees were affordable, so neither found it strange.

Zhao Yu, who had just been showing off, was actually quite concerned. Bathing in summer was no issue, but what about winter?

Now that he knew there were bathing facilities, winter bathing wouldn’t be a worry, and he breathed a sigh of relief.

"By the way, how do you know all this?" Zhao Yu was curious. Everyone was new, and they shouldn’t know anything about the farm, right?

Seeing how familiar the stranger seemed with the place made him wonder.

The stranger smiled, "You’re the new educated youth. I’m not. I was just visiting relatives and am now returning."

"I have you to thank for this." The old zhiqing was in good spirits; although getting back to the farm wasn’t impossible, it would have required a considerable walk.

"Is the farm far from here?" Shen Jie asked curiously.

"Not really far, it’s roughly thirty li from here to the farm’s headquarters."

Upon hearing this, everyone thought it wasn’t too far; Shen Jie felt that a distance of over ten kilometers wasn’t close but also not too far to accept.

The seasoned zhiqing smiled upon seeing their relieved expressions, "That’s to the headquarters, the closest to the station."

"We’re going to a lower-league team, from 1 to 10, but new land has been reclaimed for teams 11 to 15. I don’t know which one you will be assigned to."

Though it was a new farm, typically the old would lead the new, so it was unlikely the newcomers would stay in the new teams.

"The larger the number, the further away from the headquarters, and thus the furthest from the station."

While the stranger mentioned it was far, just how far was a mystery to the four newcomers. Shen Jie saw that their new acquaintance was talkative, "How far is it from the headquarters to the furthest team?"

"Maybe over twenty li," the stranger replied, knowing not too much, "I’m from team 3; I’ve not been to the new areas."

Since he hadn’t been rotated there, he exhaled with relief; new places far from the farm centre could be quite inconvenient if one needed to buy something or make a trip to the headquarters.

Over twenty li? Shen Jie and Feng Dan had no physical sense of this distance, just an awareness that it was very far.

Their only thought was that the distance was indeed substantial.

"Back home, from east to west, from south to north, we don’t even have a city district that large, do we?" Feng Dan whispered.

In the eyes of the children, the city seemed quite large. Shen Jie, who had learned about the size of the city center, knew her city wasn’t too big.

She hadn’t expected a farm’s land to be even larger than her home city’s centre.

Zhao Yu was stunned too, "Twenty li." He had run that far before but never imagined the farm would be so vast.

"I hope we..." Shen Jie was about to say something but thought better of it and remained silent.

Now aware of the farm’s layout, she started to pray. Would the higher-ups receive her prayers?

It was doubtful even Buddha could bless a last-minute plea like this.

"We’ll find out when we arrive," Shen Jie thought again. Being so far from the headquarters, even if the leaders came to inspect, it wouldn’t be easy.

Predictably, news of the leaders’ departure would spread quickly, and by the time they arrived, everyone would have prepared thoroughly.

Being close meant easy access to the headquarters for shopping, moving luggage—indeed very convenient—yet it increased the chances of encountering leaders.

It was a trade-off, Shen Jie mused, unsure of what would be best.

"I wonder which team we’ll be assigned to." Feng Dan had no preferences about which team; she just wondered if they could stay together.

Zhao Yu looked worriedly at his friend who was quietly enjoying the scenery, "Do you think we’ll still be assigned to the same team?"

He certainly hoped they could work in the same brigade and look out for one another.

"I hope so; we are from the same place and signed up together." Huo Lei felt unless the farm leaders were insane, they certainly wouldn’t split them up.

"Yeah, that’s true." Hearing Huo Lei say this, Zhao Yu felt reassured.

"As long as I’m with you, it doesn’t matter where we’re assigned." After all, work would be the same anywhere; there was nothing to complain about.

"Right, as long as we’re together, it doesn’t matter where we go," Feng Dan also stated her position.

The distance to the headquarters was just five kilometers. It would take a while to walk, but by vehicle, they would quickly reach their destination.

After bidding farewell to their friendly predecessor, the four of them merged into the crowd, waiting for the leaders to call out the roll.
