Chapter 472: Chapter 472 The Foolish Filial Man’s Wife 87_1

At the graduation ceremony, Liao Jiayu, as a representative of outstanding graduates, took the stage to speak.

Without any trace of trepidation, Liao Jiayu completed the speech flawlessly, "Finally, as everyone knows, I once participated in a bet, which I won and earned a handsome sum of money."

"Now, I am donating it all, hoping to help more younger students in need."

Liao Jiayu had received the money back in May, and that was when she made this decision.

Originally, her intention in earning this money was to teach the panellist a lesson for setting up such bets.

The graduates present, of course, were aware of this sensational betting pool and marveled at Liao Jiayu’s financial windfall upon graduation.

Unexpectedly to them, Liao Jiayu announced that she was donating all of the winnings, prompting someone in the audience to ask, "Does that include the 20,000 you initially bet?"

"Yes," Liao Jiayu confirmed that the entire sum, including the initial 20,000, would be donated.

Everyone in the audience took a sharp breath, genuinely admiring her for the gesture.

On graduation day, parents came to attend their children’s ceremony, and Zhao Wenjin and her husband were, of course, dressed to the nines.

With their arrival, everyone finally understood why Liao Jiayu had the confidence to apply for studies abroad and could casually donate a substantial amount of winnings.

Because she had the family wealth and the confidence that came with it, everyone sighed in realization that it’s true, wealthy people strive harder too.

Liao Jiayu’s roommates were also stunned; they had never imagined that Liao Jiayu was a wealthy native of Capital City.

Because she always ate at the cafeteria with everyone else, shopped at wholesale markets, and was frugal with her purchases.

Even her parents, who often traveled for business, turned out to be a well-known cartoonist and travel writer.

Liao Jiayu chuckled, "Keep a low profile; there are many students in our school from good backgrounds who also keep a low profile."

Liao Jiayu had also participated in student life on campus and was aware of some classmates’ information; if not for their profiles, one would never guess they had such substantial backgrounds.

As graduation approached and some students’ backgrounds were revealed, all that came to light about Liao Jiayu’s family was their renowned parents and then, a substantial family wealth.

After taking the graduation photo and having the last farewell dinner, Liao Jiayu graduated from the University of Political Science and Law just like that.

Standing at the school gates for the last time, "I hope that the next time I return, it will be as an invited speaker at my alma mater."

"Then you’ve got to work hard," some universities invite notable alumni to give talks, but there are only a few who get chosen.

Since classes will start at the beginning of September over there, they need to hurry to get used to the environment, rent houses, and the like; there’s a lot to do.

Zhao Wenjin and her family plan to go over in mid-July to get a house rented, purchase necessary items, and familiarize themselves with the surroundings.

Then they plan to take Liao Jiayu on a tour around the United States, and although it will be a brief visit to each place, it will also be an opportunity to enhance Liao Jiayu’s listening and speaking skills.

The goal is to significantly improve her English proficiency before school starts so she can keep up with the professors’ lectures.

Learning that Liao Jiayu had been admitted to a prestigious overseas university, Zhao Wenjin’s senior schoolmates naturally wanted to celebrate and, at the same time, introduce some of their overseas contacts to Liao Jiayu.

After all, even for a child who is independent, parents always feel a bit worried when their child is alone abroad.

As for the Liao Family’s end, while it’s possible to ignore the celebration banquet proposed by Liao Jun and others, one cannot neglect to pay a visit to Liao Daqiang and his spouse.

Knowing that Liao Kai would likely avoid them, Liao Jun was prepared. Liao Daqiang and his spouse were living in his villa, so Liao Kai could only visit them at their home.

Liao Kai did not care about Liao Jun’s little schemes. No matter how the successful businessman calculated, he would not agree without his consent.

By this time, Liao Jun had also found out just how much Liao Kai, who was supposedly relying on his wife and traveling abroad all these years, had achieved.

Although Liao Jun did not know exactly how much money Liao Kai had made, he could guess that the income was substantial from the books published by the couple.

Once, he thought he had made more money than Liao Kai and his wife would ever make in their lifetime. Yet, the couple had easily earned that money while seemingly playing around.

Zhao Wenjin’s family of three came bearing gifts to visit Liao Daqiang and his spouse. Seeing Liao Jun there as well was no surprise.

Once everyone was seated, they brought up Liao Jiayu being admitted to a foreign university. Liao Daqiang, looking at the admission notice in his hands, exclaimed, "Truly, the ancestors have blessed us."

Was this accomplishment really thanks to the ancestors? Zhao Wenjin scoffed internally but quietly sat and listened to Liao Daqiang excitedly talk.

Liao Jiayu had never expected the usually reserved old man to be so eloquent; she was slightly taken aback.

Liao Jun also wanted to flatter Liao Kai in hopes of an investment, but hearing Liao Daqiang’s praises for Liao Jiayu left a sour taste in his mouth.

Fortunately, Zhang Zhaodi spoke up to intervene, "Alright, old man, didn’t you say yesterday that if Xiao Yu got into a foreign prestigious university, you would reward her?"

Caught up in his excitement, Liao Daqiang hurriedly nodded and pulled out a large red envelope from his pocket for Liao Jiayu.

Before arriving, Zhao Wenjin had guessed that Liao Daqiang might give Liao Jiayu a red packet and had discussed whether to accept it or not.

Liao Jiayu respectfully received it, then turned and handed it back to Liao Daqiang, "Grandfather, this is my token of respect to you. I will be studying abroad, and it will be at least three to five years before I can return to the country."

It wasn’t that she couldn’t afford the plane tickets back home; she hoped to spend more time studying and interning if possible.

Liao Jun had also prepared a large red envelope, waiting for Liao Daqiang to give his before taking his out. But he hadn’t expected the girl to turn around and stuff the red envelope back.

This put him in a difficult position; it would be pointless if the gesture was returned again.

Hearing that Liao Jiayu wouldn’t return for three to five years, his eyes lit up, "Are you worried about the plane tickets? Your uncle will cover that expense."

These few days, he had researched Yale University’s prestige in legal studies, and knowing that Liao Jiayu could easily work in a foreign law firm was a solid prospect.

As for working back home, that was not an issue either. Securing a job in the judicial system meant a bright future.

Hearing about his niece’s promising prospects, Liao Jun knew he had to curry favor.

Zhao Wenjin understood the greedy nature of this uncle. She knew his fawning behavior hinted at not-so-small ambitions.

"Uncle, it’s not about the money. I will be busy memorizing legal provisions, busy with law firm internships, and I won’t have time to come back."

"But my parents will come over to stay with me." As long as her parents could be there, that was more than enough for her.

"Liao Jun, although I don’t make as much money as you, I can still afford this expense," Liao Kai firmly rejected a subsidy from Liao Jun.

It was a joke; taking small money meant spending big money later, something he would definitely not do.

And so, until Zhao Wenjin’s family of three left, Liao Jun had no opportunity to voice his request. The couple’s scornful smiles made it impossible for him to speak up.
