Chapter 431: Chapter 431 The Foolish Filial Man’s Wife 46_1
Liao Kai received a call from home, and he was momentarily stunned by the request on the other end of the line.
They wanted him to come back, which was normal enough; they were probably going to ask if he’d found a suitable boy for Liao Xuan.
But why insist on bringing Zhao Wenjin along? There definitely was a problem. He thought about the possibility that his wife had mentioned before.
Ah, this was really putting him in a tough spot, caught between having to bring his wife home and the fact that she had her own decision to make.
Looking at his male colleagues around him, they may not be decisive, but at least not every one of them could suppress their opinions.
As a man himself, he truly felt like he was letting his brethren down, Liao Kai sighed in his heart.
But there was no way around it; he couldn’t not inform his wife about such an important matter.
With apprehension, he picked up the phone to call Zhao Wenjin, who, upon receiving the call, learned that Zhang Zhaodi had requested they come over after work.
To go or not to go? Zhao Wenjin thought for a moment and quickly made a decision: Go.
Soon she came to a realization: I’m definitely not bringing anything over.
Zhao Wenjin: "Send a message back to your mom. I have to go back for dinner; otherwise, what will my daughter eat at home?"
The most important thing, after all, was that there was nothing to eat at the Liao Family’s end. Was she supposed to fight with the Liao family for food?
Forget it, there’s so much good food at home, why not just eat there.
All Liao Kai remembered was to inform Zhao Wenjin. Agreeing or not, how was he supposed to call his family back?
Knowing that Zhao Wenjin was going, he couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. He hadn’t considered the issue of dinner, but hearing his wife’s words, he promptly said he would go back to cook dinner.
Not bad at all, the young ones are making progress, unlike before. Whenever there was a call from the Liao Family, someone would always be the first to hurriedly go back, regardless of the issue’s size.
As for the matters at home, they were never taken into consideration. Now, at least on the surface, the immediate family was given priority.
Perhaps there was another possibility: Liao Kai himself didn’t want to go back for dinner, considering the quality of the meals there was extraordinarily poor.
Having made his decision, Liao Kai picked up the phone again to call Liao Xuan.
Liao Xuan, hearing that Zhang Zhaodi had asked Liao Kai and his wife to come over after work this evening, felt much better instantaneously, putting aside her previously gloomy mood.
She believed that having Liao Kai bring Zhao Wenjin home must mean discussing marriage matters.
After days of Zhang Zhaodi’s persuasion, Liao Xuan also realized that looking for a college-educated, capable, promising, local man from a well-off family, with a big house, was simply out of the question.
Liao Xuan was now ready to settle; it didn’t matter if he was a college graduate or not. What mattered was whether he had a house. Ideally, he would be like Zhao Wenjin, an only child with his own detached siheyuan.
As for a job, education, appearance, and such, Liao Xuan had already gave up on making any demands.
In her eyes, she had lowered her expectations, but to the matchmakers, these economic requirements for a prospective husband were exceptionally high.
Only children were available, but not many; some had their own detached siheyuans, but again, they were few.
The problem was that combining these two conditions significantly increased the difficulty.
The matchmakers wished they could introduce such eligible men to their children if they were available; this was the proverbial "keeping the wealth within one’s own family."
Unfortunately, they rarely came across such opportunities. And even if they did, the requirements for a future daughter-in-law were high.
At the very least, a girl with a divorced woman’s reputation, like Liao Xuan, was definitely out of the question.
Even if she could prove she had never been married, the fact that she had lived with a man was something people could find out, and how could that not make them uncomfortable?
The matchmakers had tried to persuade Zhang Zhaodi and her daughter. If they hoped to succeed in matchmaking, they really didn’t need to set such high standards; the difficulty was indeed great.
But the honest and straightforward matchmaker wound up being severely scolded by Zhang Zhaodi instead, who accused her of being incompetent and lacking access to desirable bachelors.
This behavior of turning the tables by Zhang Zhaodi once again infuriated the matchmaker, who had not skimped on promoting Liao Xuan’s demanding criteria for a husband all around.
Even though a few families thought Liao Xuan was quite decent, a college graduate with a reasonably well-off family and wanted to get to know her more,
they were completely put off upon hearing her stringent standards for choosing a husband.
If they didn’t meet her criteria, there was no need to force it; better to find a more suitable girl.
Especially after the spread of Liao Xuan’s huge argument with the elders and her sister-in-law over the New Year, she had effectively discouraged everyone even further.
Everyone was worried that bringing home such a quarrelsome bride would only lead to incessant turmoil at home, literally a house never at peace.
And so, all the various matches Liao Xuan had been scrutinizing and dissatisfied with were now gone, leaving her quite unhappy once again.
Only then did she realize that not having anyone to set her up was actually less worrying.
Now, she was hoping that Zhao Wenjin would help her find a boyfriend, realizing that the neighbors around Zhao Wenjin’s home were of good standing, and many families there were quite decent.
She truly regretted not getting closer to Zhao Wenjin and not resisting Feng Lili’s provocation earlier. Perhaps by now, Zhao Wenjin would have already introduced her to a high-quality boyfriend.
When Liao Xuan returned home, she mentioned that Liao Kai and his wife would be coming over later.
Zhang Zhaodi, upon learning that Liao Kai and his wife were waiting to eat a good meal before arriving, looked downcast. "They’re becoming more and more pretentious," she lamented.
"If they don’t come, are they worried they’ll have to cook? Hmm, they’re really putting on airs," Zhang Zhaodi said, displeased, feeling that the current situation at home had completely slipped out of her control.
In the past, both Feng Lili and Liao Xuan would have readily agreed with Zhang Zhaodi’s criticisms of Zhao Wenjin.
But now, both Feng Lili and Liao Xuan needed favors and wouldn’t dare speak ill of her.
What if Zhao Wenjin overheard or someone betrayed their words? What then?
Criticizing someone is only satisfying when others chime in; without this support, it feels rather pointless.
Having had her dinner, Zhao Wenjin hastily coordinated with Liao Jiayu, who had just returned, "I’m going with your dad to your grandma’s house."
"If a stranger calls at the door, don’t bother with it," Zhao Wenjin incessantly instructed before leaving.
Liao Jiayu nodded to show she understood.
"I really think it’s necessary for our family to get a dog," Zhao Wenjin had thought about this before but hadn’t found the right one yet.
Her motive for getting a dog was very specific – for security against burglaries. If it were just a regular pet, she wouldn’t be interested at all.
However, dogs that met her requirements were rare, and after giving it much thought, she felt it might be wise to ask her fellow disciples for advice.
After all, they had extensive connections and could perhaps easily accomplish this challenging task.
Get a dog? Liao Jiayu had long hoped to have a dog at home and was thrilled at the prospect.
Seeing the excited Liao Jiayu, Zhao Wenjin thought the biggest hassle of having a dog, someone to take care of it, was solved – "From now on, the job of walking the dog in the morning and evening will be yours."
The trouble with keeping a dog was having to take it out for exercise, which she hated the most. If possible, she would rather pay someone to walk the dog.
But now, if she was willing to pay someone to walk the dog, rumors might spread that she was a fool with too much money.
"You’ll get extra pocket money for it," she conceded to her daughter, not wanting to exploit her too much.
Upon hearing about the extra pocket money, Liao Jiayu, although initially wanting to protest, promptly sealed her lips. After all, isn’t taking money always pleasant?
