Chapter 426: Chapter 426 The Foolish Filial Man’s Wife 41_1

Liao Daqiang looked at the clock and saw it was almost eleven, guests would be arriving one after another soon, yet the house was still a mess.

Not to mention having started cooking in the kitchen, the appetizers that should have been ready by now were nowhere to be seen.

Liao Daqiang felt as if he were going to black out. Initially, he thought that while Zhao Wenjin might be in charge of preparing the ingredients, he could definitely outdo her in speed, quantity per dish, and flavor.

According to the patriarch’s wishes, it was of course hoped that Liao Jun could be the head chef. Having a chef from a big restaurant as the head chef would be such a prestigious affair.

But as soon as Liao Daqiang broached the topic, Liao Jun countered him, citing work commitments as his reason.

This infuriated Liao Daqiang, who remembered that in the past, whenever they hosted events at home, Liao Jun would always be there, never missing a single one.

Yet today, when he was sorely needed at home, he received such a response. Liao Daqiang really wanted to take the time to properly teach him a lesson.

But seeing Liao Jun standing firm without any attempt to evade or beg for mercy, Liao Daqiang suddenly felt powerless.

For he never imagined that he would see dissatisfaction in Liao Jun’s eyes—something Liao Daqiang had never considered.

To witness discontent in the eyes of the least likely person, despite all the kindness and consideration he had shown his eldest son.

All Liao Daqiang got in return was ingratitude and dissatisfaction, and no matter how much discontent he felt, he refrained from saying another word.

But the old master took serious note of this in his heart; originally intending to help them out with money when they bought a house. Now that he was angry, he would not contribute a single penny.

Liao Daqiang looked at the chaotic scene and was on the verge of exploding. "What’s the matter with you three, can’t you handle these things?"

"Zhao Wenjin used to be able to handle it all by herself," Liao Daqiang thought about how the guests would arrive soon and nothing was ready, his face turning unsightly.

"All day boasting about how capable you are, yet when it’s time to work, this is the result." Liao Daqiang got even angrier thinking about it.

Zhang Zhaodi looked at Feng Lili with dissatisfaction. "What’s wrong with you? Didn’t you claim that you could handle three tables of banquets all by yourself? All big talk."

"You really got spoiled." Now Zhang Zhaodi felt more and more dissatisfied whenever she looked at Feng Lili.

Especially since Zhao Wenjin stopped giving them proper attention and gifts, Zhang Zhaodi felt like they were lacking in many things, particularly money.

No matter whether it was the eldest daughter-in-law or their own daughter, they would talk sweetly, but when it came to money, no one would part with a cent.

"And you, Liao Xuan, you’re not that young anymore, still without a man. What are you going to do, can you still get married?"

Zhang Zhaodi had originally thought well of Liao Xuan, a college graduate working in a multinational with good looks—surely she wouldn’t lack men pursuing her.

But to her dismay, there had been no proactive suitors. Whenever someone was introduced, the date would be rejected on the spot or the candidates just didn’t measure up to Liao Xuan’s standards.

This drove Zhang Zhaodi crazy, labeling the men as unappreciative. Some matchmakers just laughed it off, while others were not so good-tempered.

They publicly denigrated Liao Xuan, calling her worthless for reasons such as her bad temper, haughty attitude, older age, and, most importantly, already living with another man.

The more venomous matchmakers were even more blunt, stating that Liao Xuan was a divorced woman.

They said that was the rumor outside, which left Zhang Zhaodi, who wanted to argue, speechless instead.

She couldn’t deny it; too many neighbors had seen it, and there was no way to lie about it.

But to settle for a man of lesser standing was out of the question, not just for Liao Xuan who wouldn’t agree, but Zhang Zhaodi wouldn’t be happy with it either.

Zhang Zhaodi looked at Liao Xuan, who still seemed unconcerned, and was utterly exasperated, "If you’re not quick on your feet with chores, who would want to marry you in the future?"

"How could there be no one to marry me? I’m a college graduate."

"I work at a foreign company," Liao Xuan simply thought her prospects couldn’t be any better; she couldn’t understand why no man was interested.

Seeing the self-satisfied Liao Xuan, Feng Lili barely held back her laughter. She really wanted to see Liao Xuan’s face when she found out what outsiders were saying about her being a divorced woman.

But she also knew it wasn’t her place to say anything, in case it stirred up a rage in Liao Xuan.

Feng Lili restrained herself from voicing her thoughts. Zhang Zhaodi, seeing the self-satisfied Liao Xuan, thought about the demands she had made on potential suitors just the other day.

Zhang Zhaodi couldn’t hold back anymore, "You still think you’re such a catch?"

"This demand, that demand, do you realize that everyone outside is calling you a divorced woman?"

Zhang Zhaodi couldn’t help it; she thought if it was possible to make Liao Xuan realize a thing or two, that would be for the best.

Divorced woman? Liao Xuan’s face turned sour as she sprang to her feet, "Who says I’m a divorced woman?"

Feng Lili was about to die of laughter. She should have known better because now Liao Xuan was aware, and she wondered how Liao Xuan would carry herself from now on.

"Everyone is saying that you’re a divorced woman," Zhang Zhaodi intimidated Liao Xuan with a fierce look.

But she quickly recovered, thinking what’s there to panic about, it wasn’t like she was making it up.

"Everyone is saying I’m a divorced woman?" Liao Xuan questioned again, wondering if she’d been working so hard that she was having hearing issues.

Zhang Zhaodi hummed in agreement, "Yes, haven’t you and Xie Haiqing been broken up for a while now? Hasn’t anyone pursued you?"

"They all think you’re a divorced woman," Zhang Zhaodi felt that this was the main reason nobody was pursuing Liao Xuan.

"How am I a divorced woman? I never officially registered my marriage with Xie Haiqing." Liao Xuan felt she was not a divorced woman because she had never married.

Feng Lili jumped in at this point, "Because you’ve cohabited with Xie Haiqing for so long, everyone would naturally think, if you didn’t register, why would you live together for so long?"

"And to cohabit at home, too," Feng Lili also felt it was rather unlucky to have such an aunt, not knowing whether this would negatively impact Liao Bin’s marriage prospects.

Liao Xuan was dumbstruck for a while before exclaiming, "I’m not married, I really didn’t go to register the marriage."

"I’m not a divorced woman." Liao Xuan was going mad; why did everyone think so when it was clearly just a breakup.

If everyone was saying this, even if a splendid young man came along, he wouldn’t consider her, much less pursue her. How could she find a splendid young man and have the upper hand over him?

She had to prove she wasn’t someone who had been married and divorced, but in her anger, she couldn’t think of the best way to dispel the rumors.

Without any options, all she could do was hope that such loud protests would make her position clear.

Just at that moment, the Liao Family’s Eldest Uncle’s household entered, just in time to hear Liao Xuan’s loud exclamation.

"What, Liao Xuan actually got divorced?" Uncle Liao’s wife was shocked, overhearing Liao Xuan’s outcry.

Uncle Liao’s wife, hard of hearing, picked up on her daughter-in-law’s comment, "What, Liao Xuan didn’t just break up but got divorced?"
