Chapter 318: Chapter 318 Unlucky Female Educated Youth 18_1

Huang Lei happily packed up her belongings, and everything she needed to take back was already packed.

She had already mailed quite a few items back, but just before leaving, she purchased some fish and meat, which she would now take back with her.

Qian Li Na looked at Huang Lei’s basket, "Huang Lei, you sure bought quite a few things."

"Yes, the farm was slaughtering pigs and didn’t require meat coupons, so of course I bought some."

"But the prices are high." Qian Li Na knew that Huang Lei wasn’t easy to take advantage of. She had thought the young girl would be too shy to buy so much, but it turned out Huang Lei didn’t have that issue.

"If bought at home, you’d need meat coupons." The price was higher, but it was cheaper than buying on the black market, so Huang Lei definitely went for the maximum amount she could purchase.

She had thought about asking some people who had given up their turn to buy to help her buy their share, but then she decided against it, as it was already quite conspicuous.

Huang Lei looked around; her bed was already covered with cloth, the cabinet was locked, and other items were placed inside the cabinet.

She picked up her basket and sturdily walked towards the farm’s office.

Today was the day they were returning home, and the farm’s office had deployed trucks that were continuously transporting them back.

By the time Huang Lei arrived at the farm’s office, there were already quite a few people gathered around, like her, carrying big and small packages.

Even Wang Nan carried a large basket on her back, and beside her was only Fan Xiaofei, and nobody else.

Huang Lei was a bit surprised, where was the loyal bootlicker Zhao Aoran?

Although she vaguely knew that their relationship was somewhat strained, wasn’t the point of being a bootlicker to stick close regardless of the situation?

Perhaps someone didn’t intend to return home for the New Year this time. After all, the Zhao Family hadn’t contacted him for so long, and with Zhao Aoran’s pride, it was normal for him to be dissatisfied and decide not to go.

Just then, Huang Lei noticed Zhao Aoran casually standing in a corner.

Huang Lei raised an eyebrow, wondering why Zhao Aoran, who didn’t bring anything back, wasn’t with Wang Nan helping her carry her things.

Had they really fallen out? Huang Lei thought for a moment, but since she didn’t know the whole story, she decided not to dwell on it. Overthinking was just too exhausting.

Especially after the truck arrived, she was busy squeezing on board; otherwise, if she missed it, who knew when she would reach the train station—after all, their train tickets wouldn’t wait for anyone.

Once the truck stopped, a few men climbed aboard first and then helped others up. Soon, a hand reached out in front of Huang Lei.

Huang Lei quickly grabbed it, and with the help, she boarded the truck. "Than..." She was just about to say thanks when she realized it was Zhao Aoran.

She was really surprised, considering their relationship was even worse than that of average classmates.

And yet, at that moment, he actually lent her a hand, "Thank you."

"No problem," Zhao Aoran continued to help others, whispering quietly.

With so many people, it was quite noisy, and if not for being right there, she could’ve easily missed it.

Huang Lei thought for a moment, took a candy out of her pocket, and placed it in Zhao Aoran’s hand, "Thank you."

Then she walked further inside, quickly finding a spot by the railing, and placed the basket in front of her.

Fortuitously, she ran into Zhang Xia, Han Qian, and others, and they found a corner on the side, quickly enclosing it with their luggage and baskets.

That way, even if the truck was crowded, no one would bump into them directly, especially since they had about an hour’s ride ahead.

The truck quickly filled up and pulled away without another word.

Wang Nan and Fan Xiaofei watched in shock as the truck filled up in front of them and then drove off.

Wang Nan was very angry, "Really, what’s with Zhao Aoran? He clearly saw me, I was right in front of him, why didn’t he pull me on?"

If he had pulled her on, she would have been on the truck by now and wouldn’t have to queue up again.

Looking at the truck already surrounded by people, Wang Nan felt overwhelmed, her dissatisfaction with Zhao Aoran growing ever stronger.

Fan Xiaofei, listening to Wang Nan’s constant complaints about Zhao Aoran, initially thought he would be happy to hear it. If only she would grow more dissatisfied with Zhao Aoran, then he wouldn’t have to compete with him for Wang Nan.

But he soon realized that he wasn’t so happy, "Okay, let’s queue up. Otherwise, if we miss the train..."

"No way," Wang Nan panicked when she heard this, "I’ve bought a lot of stuff. My mom says my sister-in-law is now in her later stages of pregnancy."

"I went to great lengths to buy fish and meat. I want to give them a nourishing meal so they can have smart and adorable nephews."

Thinking about how the Wang Family would soon gain two little boys filled Wang Nan with joy.

Fan Xiaofei listened to Wang Nan’s anticipations for the unborn children and glanced at the fish and meat in her basket, then at his own rather empty one.

At that moment, he started to feel guilty. Life here was tough for him, but did that mean life was any easier for his parents and younger siblings back home?

Although life on the farm was hard, at least he could fill his stomach, while his parents in the city were struggling.

Even though connections had helped to spare his father from worse fates, the chance of him being reinstated to his old job was impossible; he was now just an ordinary worker in a small factory.

Their income had significantly decreased, they lost many benefits, and no one gave them anything anymore. It could be said that their lives had taken many steps backward.

It was bad enough that he couldn’t help his family, but the truth was, he had the means to at least do something, yet he hadn’t thought of giving them any assistance.

Instead, he was helping Wang Nan. Her pregnant sisters-in-law needed nutrition, but didn’t his own parents and siblings need that too?

His whole family of five was relying on the meager wages of his parents, whereas in Wang Nan’s family, her father and her two brothers and their wives all had incomes.

The income of her family was incomparable to his own, why was he foolishly giving any help at all?

Watching Wang Nan talk non-stop about her family, Fan Xiaofei recalled Huang Lei, whose relationship with Wang Nan had worsened since they arrived here.

He noticed that she seemed in much better spirits than when she first arrived at the farm.

Everyone used to think Wang Nan was far more beautiful than Huang Lei, but now, who would think Wang Nan looked better? She appeared much more haggard.

And then there was Zhao Aoran. One would have thought with no one talking to him and being isolated by everyone, he would be in bad shape. After all, apart from Fan Xiaofei and Wang Nan, who would bother with him?

Yet Zhao Aoran managed to come and go solo, staying quiet when no one spoke to him.

Even when someone made a remark about his body odor right to his face, the old Zhao Aoran would have exploded in anger. Even if he wouldn’t fight, he would at least argue with them.

But Zhao Aoran would just give a cold look and then carry on with his work.

After this happened several times, people stopped saying such things in front of him. They couldn’t provoke Zhao Aoran, and saying it was pointless.

After giving it some thought, he realized that both Huang Lei and Zhao Aoran seemed to be getting on quite well these days.
