Chapter 173: Chapter 173: Brother-in-law is the Ex 73_1
Over the weekend, because we were going out for hotpot in the evening, I left work at just past four.
Of course, the reason I stayed late at work until then was that I ran into Shen Lan in the morning. He said he drove to the company today and that we’d leave together in the afternoon to meet up with Huang Jing and the others downtown.
When colleagues saw Huang Jing leaving work early, even though today was Sunday, for social animals like us, having a task meant there was no distinction between weekdays and weekends.
"Xia Ke and the others are treating today, inviting me and God Shen." Huang Jing now referred to Shen Lan exclusively as God Shen.
Going out to eat with Shen Lan? Colleagues who were still busy all looked up at Huang Jing, their eyes filled with as much envy as possible.
Even though we all work in the same office, to this day, many people only know there’s a God Shen and what he looks like, but that’s as far as interactions go.
Turns out Huang Jing, who used to be one of us, went out traveling once and somehow got to go on a trip with the big shot. And after they came back, there was even interaction between them.
Everyone knew that Huang Jing and the big shot were an impossible match, but to be able to have a meal together, to discuss some issues, wouldn’t that help improve oneself?
Thinking of this, everyone became excited, "Will you ask God Shen about some work-related stuff?"
Unable to contain their curiosity, someone asked out loud.
Everyone turned their attention to Huang Jing, anticipating her answer. Huang Jing could only express helplessness in the face of their curiosity, "How can I ask for advice on that?"
"Perhaps the questions I ask would seem very simple to God Shen."
"If I ask more difficult questions and God Shen answers them, what if I can’t understand the answers? What then?"
"Better to spare myself and spare God Shen the trouble, instead of making it difficult for both of us." The main point was that Huang Jing felt it was better just to quietly be a social animal.
Listening to this, everyone found it reasonable and nodded in agreement. "That’s true."
"The gap is too big."
If the gap weren’t so large, one could just ask and learn something to boost one’s skills, but with such a big gap, it really is all kinds of awkward.
"Exactly."
"Yeah, our questions would probably seem to God Shen like asking what 1+1 equals."
Huang Jing agreed with this very much and kept nodding, "That’s why I don’t ask questions."
"How about your usual interactions then?" Someone was very curious. If you don’t ask about computer-related issues, there must be other things you can talk about, right?
How to interact, well, regarding that question, Huang Jing thought for a moment, "It seems we really haven’t talked about much."
Before, there were Fan Chen and Xia Ke. With them around, could the conversation still be calm?
Not to mention, Fan Chen could definitely make any scene lively, and Huang Jing mainly chatted with Xia Ke.
The one time she could count as being alone with Shen Lan, they hardly exchanged a couple of words.
"It seems we really haven’t talked much." Huang Jing knew that once she said this, her colleagues would probably not believe her, but the truth was just like that.
"His presence is too formidable. I always feel like I’m facing the dean of discipline." Indeed, even in front of her direct superiors, Huang Jing never felt this intimidated.
But in front of Shen Lan, the pressure felt unusually great, the very serious kind.
This statement gained several nods of agreement, "Exactly, I feel the same way."
After chatting for a few more moments with her colleagues, Huang Jing quickly said her goodbyes, "I can’t keep God Shen waiting."
After all, God Shen’s time was really valuable, and she definitely couldn’t waste it because of a minor character like herself.
Knowing it was getting late, Huang Jing hurried to the parking lot and saw Shen Lan already waiting for her at the designated elevator exit.
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry." No matter what, it was she who was late, so it was right to apologize first.
"It’s fine, I’ve only just arrived too," Shen Lan, who was still working on his laptop in the driver’s seat, put away his computer after seeing Huang Jing.
Once she was seated, they drove off towards the city, and the journey could not have been quieter.
Most people, even if they don’t talk while driving, will at least play some music, but this guy didn’t have music and didn’t seem to want to talk at all.
Although it felt a bit monotonous, it was still better than having God Shen initiate a chat.
Huang Jing was deep in thought with her head bowed, wondering how the Huang family was handling the chaos she caused yesterday.
Ho Zhen, with no way out, could only keep a constant watch on Huang Lei, aside from having to keep an eye on her; he also took a big bite, asking for three hundred thousand, for example.
Huang Jing knew that the Huang family was being stubborn, calling Ho Zhen’s actions blackmail, but she also knew that in the end, they would give in.
The matter of calling the police might not even be accepted; after all, Ho Zhen did spend money for Huang Lei and was asking for compensation for his emotional distress, which is normal, just the asking price was high.
But the asking price is negotiable and cannot be considered extortion.
Especially if they called the police, the incident would become publicly known, and the Huang family’s reputation would be thoroughly trampled on.
Once the money is paid, Huang Lixin’s opinion of Huang Lei would drop again, no matter how much he doted on his precious daughter, you can’t keep courting disaster.
Seeing that Huang Jing was silent, Shen Lan couldn’t help thinking of the phone call he overheard that day, "Some people might be parents, but they might not be good parents."
"Better keep your distance in the future."
If anyone tried to advise that you should be good to your parents no matter what, because they are your parents, Shen Lan really didn’t want to hear that nonsense.
Hearing this, Huang Jing looked up in surprise at Shen Lan; she knew that many people would only encourage reconciliation with parents, advising that children should always acquiesce to their wishes.
"Sometimes you have to be a little selfish," Shen Lan said, not even sure why he said it, as he really wasn’t a meddlesome person.
Huang Jing nodded in agreement, "Right, people have to be selfish."
"My sister is Huang Lei, she is selfish, she believes she has to snatch away anything that benefits her."
"And my parents, they always take her side. I used to be hurt by this, but not anymore."
"Let’s just say my bond with them is very weak."
"I’ll take on the responsibility I should bear for supporting my parents, but beyond that, I’m sorry."
"That’s a good way to handle it," said Shen Lan, as he continued to drive in silence.
Huang Jing looked out at the scenery, "It’s really the weekend, huh."
"Weekends mean more people and more cars." Truth be told, Shen Lan didn’t want to go out either, "That’s why I don’t like going out."
Going out was such a waste of time; with that time, he didn’t know how much he could have done.
Huang Jing looked at Shen Lan, who was slowly driving through the traffic, and still asked, "Actually, we could have taken the subway."
Though it might take a bit longer, at least they wouldn’t have to drive, and at least they could be more certain of their timing.
Take the subway? Oh, could Shen Lan say that he’d forgotten there was such a means of transportation?
He couldn’t admit it, absolutely couldn’t. Shen Lan quietly looked ahead with no intention of responding.
Instead, Huang Jing began to rationalize on her own, "But that makes sense, sitting on the subway surrounded by people, while being outside allows you to see the scenery, observe the changes in Shencheng."
Really? Shen Lan was surprised to hear the excuse Huang Jing came up with; was that why he drove?
