Chapter 647: Chapter 643 Cherish the Present Son

——————

After returning to their own home, Yan Jinsu couldn’t hold it together anymore. Seeing her so exhausted, Zhou Xiuhua hurriedly sent her and her two children back to the west wing to nap.

The remaining older children had no choice but to find their respective mothers. Xiao Si and his siblings gathered around their biological father after seeing him, sharing their earlier adventures with him.

Yan Jinsu was escorted back to her room by Xie Jingchen, in a daze, she changed clothes and washed up, and was then coaxed to sleep by her husband.

The two youngest children, clearly lacking the energy of their older siblings, quietly followed their parents back to their own room. After having their faces and limbs washed by their father and changing into clean clothes, they obediently slept beside their mommy.

Once Xie Jingchen saw that the mother and children had all fallen asleep, he returned to the front yard, intending to help Mr. Xie and his wife pack for their travels.

Unexpectedly, upon entering the front yard, Divine Power saw Xiaoqi and Xiao Si hugging their grandmother, both crying pitifully.

"Grandma, I don’t want to be separated from Second Aunt..." Xiaoqi cried her heart out in her grandma’s arms. Only now did the siblings realize that Second Aunt’s family would not be returning to X county town with them.

The young children hadn’t anticipated this; just moments ago they were happily playing with Second Aunt, and now they had to part ways. This was a heavy blow for Xiao Si and Xiaoqi.

"Grandpa, can’t we stay with Second Aunt?" Xiao Si didn’t burst into tears like Xiaoqi but looked at Old Xie with silent tears and asked in a low, despondent voice.

Father Xie Jingyang, overwhelmed by the situation, looked helpless, his biological children preferring their Third Sister-in-law over their own father, a clear indication of his parental failings.

Xie Jingchen stopped in his tracks and stood outside the hall, quietly listening to the conversation inside—

Xie Tiesheng glanced at Fifth, who was following behind his grandson. He felt a bit of frustration, almost as if spiteful that hard work had not turned to steel. Among the entire family, Fifth was the most educated, yet it seemed as if his studies made him oblivious to social customs—he knew nothing about human interactions.

Now, even his children didn’t hold him dear. While not all blame could be placed on Fifth, as a biological father, his errors were undeniable, and he wasn’t without fault.

Xie Jingyang clenched his fists, rubbing them against each other, not daring to look into his father’s disappointed eyes. Instead, he helplessly gazed at the frail backs of his son and daughter, unsure how to speak up and where he stood.

He knew he had failed as a father. It had been a year since he divorced his ex-wife.

But during this year, due to his studies and work, Xiao Si and Xiaoqi had always followed their grandparents to Rongshu County, living alongside their second sister-in-law. As a result, the children grew distant from him.

Even his youngest sister held a more important place in his children’s hearts than him, a fact he couldn’t deny or ignore.

But life was such a helpless thing.

He wanted to be capable of caring for his children, and that started with the ability to reinvent himself. If he couldn’t even take care of himself properly, how could he expect to take care of a pair of children?

And he had to work, with the children being so young and the house lacking a lady, there was simply no one to care for their daily lives.

With reality starkly contrasting his desires, he inevitably had to leave his children. The lack of time for father and children to be close meant that with children’s nature to forget quickly, they would instinctively grow attached to the kind relatives who’ve been with them over time.

He had seen firsthand how Third Sister-in-law treated his children. Whether it was her attentiveness or the material things she provided, he could not compare to her sincerity.

"Xiao Si, Qi’er, are you going to follow Second Aunt and leave Grandpa, father, and mother?"

"Grandpa..." The siblings exchanged a glance, both feeling a bitter sweetness in their hearts. Their eyes widened as they followed Grandpa’s gaze to father, who stood behind them in silent follow.

"No, that’s not what we mean." Qi’er’s plump little lips pursed as she softly objected.

Though Qi’er was young, she knew from Grandpa’s demeanor that she and her brother had no other choice.

"Xiao Si, Qi’er, be good. Second Aunt is pregnant and heavy, while Xiaojiu and Xiao Shi are still too young for her to care for you as well. Maybe when Second Aunt’s child is born, she might return to Rongshu County." Zhou Xiuhua’s heart ached for her grandchildren and she comforted them with gentle words.

Her gaze towards Fifth was less than friendly.

"Really?" Qi’er questioned disbelievingly, while Xiao Si remained silent.

Xie Jingyang sighed internally, realizing that he could only play the villain.

"Qi’er, Xiao Si, Daddy is sorry. When Daddy makes enough money, he’ll bring you to Second Aunt’s place, alright? For this time, you’ll first accompany Daddy to Rongshu County." Just give Daddy a little more time, and he would be able to live together with his siblings.

Xie Jingyang consoled himself, thinking that it was because they had been apart too long that their bond seemed so weak. He needed to give them more love and patience.

Qi’er hung her head low, while Xiao Si had already understood that there was no room for soft words. He reached out and grabbed his sister’s fist, meeting the concerned gaze of father, Grandpa, and grandma head-on with a calm reply:

"Mhm, Qi’er and I will be obedient."

Xiao Si understood that they were too young, and except for being obedient and accepting adults’ decisions, they had no other choice.

Xie Jingyang’s heart clenched, and he could only stroke his son’s buzzcut, unable to utter a word.

Xie Tiesheng and Zhou Xiuhua said nothing more; once the children understood, they let it go. Because no amount of beautiful words could truly comfort the children, keeping their word was the only integrity left.

Yet, both elders felt the same pain in their hearts for their grandchildren’s obedient and precocious nature.

Xie Jingchen observed the entire exchange without interjecting, stood silently a few minutes longer, and then led his sister back to the inner room where grandma commanded them to take their afternoon nap.

As soon as Xie Jingyang stepped out of the main house, he saw Third Brother leaning against the doorway, smoking a cigarette in his hand. He noticed it was one of the cigarettes they had prepared for guests yesterday. He hadn’t expected that Third Brother, who was practically quitting smoking after marriage, would have taken up smoking again.

"Third Brother?" Xie Jingyang felt uneasy seeing Third Brother’s expression, but he had always looked up to him and instinctively called out to him.

"Mhm." Xie Jingchen took the last puff of the cigarette, crushed it under his foot, and spoke earnestly to Fifth:

"Fifth, no matter what the emotional bond is, it must be nurtured with sincerity. Whether you can keep the children with you this time depends on you. If you don’t treat Xiao Si and Qi’er well, I won’t hesitate to take them in."

"Uh, yes!" Xie Jingyang then realized that Third Brother must have been there all along. Was this remark meant to stand up for Xiao Si and Qi’er?

Xie Jingyang was somewhat bemused but nodded gravely at Third Brother, whose complexion turned dark.

Xiao Si and Qi’er were his biological children; how could he possibly not treat them well?

"Cherish what you’ve got before you." After saying this, Xie Jingchen passed by him and went back into the main house, not forgetting the purpose of his visit to the front yard.
