Chapter 953: Chapter 955: The Marriage Proposal Arrives (3)

"Look at you, lad—so impatient like a monkey. Who decides on a wedding date immediately after proposing? You must have been a bachelor in a past life, to have never seen a daughter-in-law!"

Lady Liu chided him, took over the letter, read it once, and said, "This is a good thing; Grandmother will certainly grant you what you wish. The only concern is the lower status of the Mu Family. Could it draw criticism at court?"

Regarding Cai Wei’s background, Nangong Yi had indeed pondered it. Now Mu Zhongqing is but a Scholar, and for Cai Wei to marry him openly and honorably, there will certainly be many people gossiping. Therefore, he had resolved to pave the way for Mu Zhongqing’s official career. Naturally, the start couldn’t be too high, otherwise, the Imperial Historians would impeach him for leveraging nepotism. Mu Zhongqing wouldn’t accept that either. Thus, he planned to temporarily grant him a position as a Hanlin Academy Collator, and slowly promote him over time, which Mu Zhongqing would presumably be willing to accept.

"This matter requires no worry from Grandmother, as your grandson already has a plan. By the time comes, I shall surely silence those idle tongues!"

"That’s good to hear. Don’t let impulse cloud your judgement and provoke criticism from the court ministers," Duke Li Guo advised.

...*...*...

Cai Wei’s family returned to their own manor, and Zhang Biaotou’s family, seeing that the Second Miss was also found, were very happy. They hurried to instruct their spouse to prepare food for a welcoming feast for the house master.

Mu Zhongqing, however, was not in the mood for food and drink. These past days, the family’s shops in town had been closed, likely incurring losses of hundreds of taels at least.

It wasn’t that he was greedy for money, but his daughter’s grand wedding was imminent. He wanted to prepare a decent bridal gift for his daughter so that when she married, she wouldn’t be looked down upon by her mother-in-law for appearing too modest. Hence, he was eager to earn more silver to make his daughter proud.

After sending his wife and children into the house, Mu Zhongqing didn’t even drink a sip of water before he hurried out the door, wanting to check the family shops, and incidentally, to inform the shopkeepers to resume work tomorrow!

Upon hearing that the house master was leaving, Zhang Biaotou, without any instruction, automatically hitched up the horse carriage. Driving the carriage, he took Mu Zhongqing away from the manor, heading straight for the shops in the Capital. After several days of not opening for business, it was uncertain whether some of the old customers had become disappointed or if there would be a loss of customers.

Mu Zhongqing calculated the entire way on the ride, thinking that if King Qin truly came to propose, he would treat King Qin’s bridal price as the bridal gifts, and give Cai Wei the manor and the Dim Sum Shop along as well. All those ancestral businesses were acquired by Cai Wei, so it was reasonable to include them in her dowry. Although King Qin’s Mansion wouldn’t lack such things, it was still necessary to add a few items from the Mu Family to fill up the bridal gifts, wasn’t it?

And then there was Fei’er. Judging by the circumstances, that girl would marry no one but Mo Ziqi. Since the Mu Family’s eldest daughter could marry King Qin as the Main Consort, it shouldn’t be a problem for the second daughter to marry Mo Ziqi as an Official Wife. By then, he would provide the cloth shop as Fei’er’s dowry, along with her bridal price, and send it all to her mother-in-law’s house. That way, it seemed justified.

As for Wen’er and Wu’er, they were still young. After all, the family owned a restaurant. If they were a bit more frugal, saving up for ten or eight years, finding wives for the two of them shouldn’t be a problem in the future!

"Old Master, we’ve arrived!"

Zhang Biaotou stopped the carriage at the entrance of Bafu Restaurant and called out to the inside of the carriage.

Upon hearing this, Mu Zhongqing quickly got down from the carriage and walked towards the restaurant.

"Zhongqing!"

A surprised and joyful call startled Mu Zhongqing. He turned around and saw his father Mu Liankui and brother Mu Zhongli running towards him, their faces filled with surprise and joy.

"Hahaha, I just knew that ’Bafu Restaurant’ must be yours. I’ve been waiting here for days, and sure enough, here you are!"

Mu Zhongli warmly made small talk, taking the opportunity to look over his long-lost younger brother.
