Chapter 947: Chapter 949: Meeting the Parents-in-law (4)
Cai Wei’s mouth twitched, and she nearly toppled headfirst from the stool.
Lady Du and Mu Zhongqing were dumbfounded. Before them was the future emperor of the Great Jin Nation, the supremely noble heir, and now he was humbly kneeling before them, addressing them as his parents-in-law. Could it be that he truly wanted to take Wei’er as his wife? But how could their family’s status ever match that of the royal family? Moreover, he referred to himself as ’son-in-law’—Emperor Bodhisattva, how could he be ’little’? He was so grand he could crush someone to death!
Seeing that her parents were still in shock, forgetting to ask Nangong Yi to rise, Cai Wei coughed softly.
Nangong Yi showed no signs of impatience. He remained kneeling, his attitude humble yet not devoid of nobility.
Reminded by Cai Wei, Lady Du and Mu Zhongqing suddenly came back to their senses. Mu Zhongqing hurriedly stepped forward to help Nangong Yi up.
"Your Highness King Qin, this humble one is of lowly status and dares not receive such a grand gesture from Your Highness."
Nangong Yi said, "The two of you are Cai Wei’s parents, naturally my parents-in-law. It’s common for the elder to receive a bow from the younger, where does this talk of daring come from?"
Mu Zhongqing smiled bitterly and said, "Your Highness, since you have brought it to this point, let this humble one speak frankly what is in our hearts. Please sit down, Your Highness, and allow me to explain slowly."
Having said that, he invited Nangong Yi to sit down.
In Great Jin, the seating arrangement was a matter of great importance. Usually, those of higher status or guests of honor would sit at the head, and others would sit on either side. Nangong Yi, paying no attention to Mu Zhongqing’s invitation, insisted on taking a seat to the right below the head, where Cai Wei had been sitting before. He requested that Mu Zhongqing and his wife sit in the two chairs at the head, arguing that as Cai Wei’s parents, and his parents-in-law, they should rightfully sit at the head, while he, as their son-in-law and a younger member, should sit lower down—that was only proper.
Mu Zhongqing, unable to refute him, reluctantly watched him take his seat. Although touched by his demeanor, the couple’s stance concerning their daughter’s lifelong happiness would not easily change.
"Wei’er, go and check on Wen’er and Wu’er. Those two boys have been quiet for too long; see what they are up to!"
Mu Zhongqing spoke, sending Cai Wei out. She understood her father’s intentions and cooperatively left.
As soon as their daughter’s figure disappeared, Mu Zhongqing stood up and clasped his hands, saying, "King Qin is a noble personage and busy with many matters. This humble one will speak straightforwardly, hoping King Qin will not take offense at my presumption!"
Nangong Yi, with a clear and gentle smile, said, "Father-in-law, there’s no need to be so polite. Speak your mind freely."
Mu Zhongqing gestured with his hand and said, "The term ’father-in-law’ is used by a man towards the father of his wife. Is it not somewhat inappropriate for Your Highness to address this humble one in such a manner?"
Nangong Yi raised his eyebrows and asked, "What’s inappropriate about it?"
Mu Zhongqing said, "Your Highness, with your identity, when you take a wife in the future, there will surely be a noblewoman of equal status to match you. My daughter is but a Scholar’s Daughter, regarded as lowly in the eyes of you royal nobles. Therefore, The Emperor and Empress would never allow Wei’er to become your wife, Wife of King Qin. Although you and Wei’er have mutual affection and she is willing to follow you regardless of her reputation, we, as parents, cannot watch our child embark on the wrong path with our eyes wide open."
"We would rather our daughter marry an honest and upright scholar and lead an honest life as an official wife, than see her marry into the royal family and live in constant fear and trepidation as a concubine. If you truly care for my daughter, please do not come to see her again. Let her go and allow her to live her life in peace!"
"Ha!"
Nangong Yi laughed, his handsome face bright and clear, like a celestial being from exile: "Indeed, Wei’er is a child brought up by her parents, even her thoughts are indistinguishable from those of her parents!"
