Chapter 88: Chapter 88 Night Pearl_1

"Ah, Miss..."

Before Zhui Feng could finish his words, Cai Wei had already left without looking back.

"Master, your servant..."

He turned towards the horse carriage, but before he could finish his words, the carriage had also moved away, leaving him standing alone pitifully in the middle of the long street...

...

Since Bafu Restaurant opened earlier today, and there were ample skewers to sell, when the accounts were checked at night, the accountant gave everyone a pleasant surprise.

"Two bosses, our profit from Bafu Restaurant today is twenty-one taels of three money!"

"Wow—Terrific—"

The entire store cheered. The shopkeepers, chef, accountants, errand boys, even several family servants of the Mu Family couldn’t contain their excitement. This was because the young lady had said that from now on, everyone’s salary would be linked to the restaurant’s income. The higher the profit from the restaurant, the more everyone would earn. Hence, despite being tired, no one was bothered by it. Instead, they hoped that business could boom and ideally, bring in a fortune every day!

After balancing the accounts, Cai Wei instructed Aunt Liu to prepare a pot of dumplings in the kitchen for everyone’s late-night snack while she returned to the back house.

Given the various incidents that happened today, her mother must be upset. She had to go back and comfort her.

Indeed, as soon as she walked through the door, she saw her mother listlessly sitting under a lamp, indifferently sewing a half-completed horse-face skirt while Cai Fei attended to her cautiously.

Upon seeing Cai Wei return, Cai Fei hurriedly said, "Older sister, it’s a good thing you’re back. Please persuade mother. Mother has such a narrow heart. Just because of a few casual comments from the main house, she’s been upset for the whole afternoon. No matter how we try to convince her, it’s no use!"

With tear-rimmed eyes, Lady Du said, "It doesn’t matter what others think of me. I just don’t want your father to be laughed at outside and you girls, who are getting to the age of marrying, to be affected by these unfounded things. If that happens, it’s my big sin." As she spoke, tears rolled down her cheeks.

Laughing, Cai Wei said, "Mother, you’re thinking too much. As the saying goes, ’truth can’t be falsified, and falsehood can’t be proven.’ No matter how they magnify those baseless things, they can’t convince people. Why do you insist on thinking about it?"

Wiping her tears, Lady Du said, "I understand all these principles, but they’re making me feel suffocated. There’s another thing: Will your father be annoyed with us if he finds out the matter of the main house’s family being put into prison has something to do with us?"

Sitting down, Cai Wei took her mother’s hand and said calmly, "The main house has compelled us into a dead-end. If we don’t fight back, we could only sit here and wait to die. Father is a sensible person. If he knows what the main house has done, he won’t blame us. And if he does fault us for it, he is being foolish and not worthy to be a father or husband. We don’t have to care about his feelings then!"

Lady Du didn’t expect her daughter to say such words. She was taken aback for a moment but, after thinking it over, she felt her daughter was making sense and began to calm down.

Cai Wei spoke again, "Mother, you don’t have to worry about me and Fei’er’s marriages. Although we have lived in this town for a long time, that doesn’t mean we have to stay here forever. Maybe once our business expands, we can move to the picturesque Jiangnan!"

Upon hearing this, Lady Du’s worry turned into joy. She playfully said, "You, always sweet-talking mother!"

Cai Wei replied, "How could this be deceiving? You’ve also seen our earnings these days. Just in this remote small town, our skewers can bring in such revenue. If we opened a shop in a major place like Jiangnan or the capital, wouldn’t we be making incredibly big money!"

"Yes, mother, older sister is absolutely right!" Cai Fei echoed.

After some thought, Lady Du felt Cai Wei’s words were indeed reasonable. If they moved their home to the capital or Jiangnan, they could completely disengage from the main house. Their roast skewers could be sold like hotcakes and they could make a fortune...

She was lost in her daydream...

Seeing that her mother was no longer troubled, Cai Wei excused herself, claiming that she was tired and wanted to rest early. She went back to her room.

She had promised Bai Mei and Brother Parrot that she would roast skewers for them today. These gluttons must have been looking forward to it all day, so she had to go into the space early to fulfill her promise.

Upon entering her room, she closed the door, lifted the bed curtain, and prepared to enter the space from the bed.

However, the moment she lifted the bed curtain, she noticed an elegantly crafted brocade box lying quietly on the couch. The box was the exact one she had seen in the hands of the square-faced boy!

Ugh! How detestable!

Cai Wei went nuts. This square-faced boy actually sneaked into her boudoir while her family was present. Luckily, her underwear wasn’t on the bed or her face would’ve been completely discredited. Even so, having a man sneak into her boudoir was still nauseating!

Out of anger, she picked up the box and slipped into space. At this moment, she was curious to see what was so important it had to be given to her.

The divine beasts in the space had run off somewhere to play. She strolled into the courtyard, sat on the swing under the banyan tree and, while leisurely swinging, opened the box.

"Good heavens!"

Upon opening the box, the contents gave her a big shock!

In the splendid brocade box, a brilliant and crystal-clear pearl was set in red velvet. It emitted a soft glow. The pearl, the size of a pigeon egg and in a dim green color, was round and transparent. Holding it in her hand, it felt heavy and cold, as if it were truly... a Night Pearl!

To validate her assumption, she shouted, "Go!"

In the blink of an eye, she was back in her room.

She hadn’t lit the lamp in her boudoir but the moment she came back, the room instantly filled with light, as bright as daytime. The source of light was the pearl in her hand!

Wow!

It is indeed a Night Pearl! What a generous gift from that evil being!

Inhaling sharply, Cai Wei held the pearl up to her eyes and examined it. The more she looked at it, the more she felt the pearl was priceless. The more she thought about it, the more she realized she couldn’t keep it.

Amazingly generous but unrequited favors are either deceitful or thieving. That evil being was already suspicious of her identity. It was not easy to draw clear boundaries with him, but now if she were to accept his precious gift, she would inevitably be entangled with him again. No, she couldn’t accept it. Absolutely not. She had to return it!
