Chapter 608: Chapter 608: Reencountering Cai Ping (1)_1

Today’s weather was truly glorious, with bright sunshine, no clouds in sight, and an atmosphere brimming with the vibrance of spring. After returning from the military camp, Cai Wei rode in a horse carriage directly to County Magistrate Shen’s Mansion. Since she had nothing to do today, she planned to finalize the purchase of the manor and start sowing as soon as possible to prepare for future needs.

The carriage stopped in front of the grand gates of the Shen Mansion. Cai Wei paid the coachman, then went ahead to knock on the door.

After knocking for what seemed like an eternity, a green-clothed page boy came out and impatiently asked, "What do you want?"

Cai Wei replied, "Dear young man, could you pass on a message for me? A Miss Mu would like to meet with your Miss. Here is some silver for your troubles." As she spoke, she handed the boy a piece of silver, roughly weighing about one ounce.

The boy, his face brightening as he accepted the silver, looked around, then whispered, "Miss Mu, our home has recently fallen into troubles. The old master has given an order that no guests are to be received. If you have any urgent matters, you may want to write a letter to our Miss, and I will find a way to deliver it for you!"

A thought struck Cai Wei. What could have happened at the Shen Mansion that required them to close their doors to visitors? Could it be related to Aunt Yan?

Thinking of this, she politely said, "Thank you very much. In that case, I’ll go back and write a letter. Once it’s done, I’ll bring it over. When the time comes, I hope you can take the trouble to deliver it."

"Of course, please don’t hesitate to let me know if you need anything else, Miss Mu." The page was actively courteous.

As soon as she stepped away from the gates of the Shen Mansion, Cai Wei immediately summoned Brother Parrot to go investigate what precisely was happening inside the mansion.

Upon hearing his master’s command, Brother Parrot squawked and flew into the Shen Mansion to investigate.

While waiting, Cai Wei went for a stroll around the street. She planned to find a small restaurant nearby, have breakfast, and incidentally write a letter to Shen Juhua, asking when she would be able to accompany Madam Cui to the manor for the handover process.

However, at this early hour, many taverns were still closed with only a few food stalls open, selling light fare such as steamed buns, soymilk, and porridge.

After wandering for awhile, she sat down in front of a food stand run by an old couple. The elderly stall owner hurried over and kindly asked, "Young lady, what would you like to eat?"

Cai Wei looked around and said, "I’ll have a steamed bun, a plate of pickled vegetables, and a bowl of millet porridge, please!"

"Alright, coming right up!"

The old man draped a towel over his shoulder and cheerfully went to serve Cai Wei’s porridge.

At this moment, a shabbily-dressed woman leading a six or seven-year-old girl, timidly approached the old man, handed over one copper coin, and whispered, "Sir, we’d like to buy a bowl of porridge."

The porridge vendor glanced at the woman, then at the timid girl, heaved a sigh, scooped out a generous portion of thick porridge, put it into a bowl, and handed it over to the mother and her daughter.

"Thank you, sir!"

The woman, noticing the man’s gesture, blushed as she thanked him.

Cai Wei observed the woman. She saw an attractive woman, with fine brows and bright eyes. Although her clothes were tattered, she was impeccably clean. The little girl, despite also wearing tattered clothes, was equally neat and tidy, not unkempt at all.

"Xi Niu’er, eat it while it’s hot!"

The woman pushed the bowl of porridge in front of her daughter, whispering softly.

The little girl with her wide eyes stared fixedly at the steaming bowl of rice porridge, swallowed audibly, but shook her head firmly.
