Chapter 602: Chapter 602 Three Obediences and Four Virtues(3)_1
"As for the strategy to attack the Meng slaves, no specific plan has been set yet, but I do share your hope for a quick resolution."
The two of them walked into Nangong Yi’s military tent as they talked.
The interior of his tent was simple, with no decorations whatsoever, only a basic table and a row of chairs. On the table, there was a teapot and several teacups, all of common quality. Besides that, there were brushes, ink, paper, and an ink-stone, as well as a sand table, obviously used for the generals to discuss military matters on a daily basis.
The two had walked through a curtain to reach Nangong Yi’s resting area. His bed was surprisingly made of wooden planks propped up on green bricks. The planks were not even, with hay spread over them. The bedding on top of the hay felt a bit damp and smelled musty. It was probably because he had to pack up every morning to hurry on his journey, causing the bedding to have no chance to be aired out. Cai Wei wrinkled her nose- she wondered how he could sleep on such bedding!
In front of the bed was a small table. Inside a rough ceramic bowl on the table was stewed cabbage without any broth. On top of it floated half-eaten corn mixed-flour buns and a few pieces of vegetable leaves. Cai Wei used chopsticks to stir it around and she didn’t find a single strip of meat.
"What happened to the beef sauce I cooked for you? Why are you eating this?"
Cai Wei pointed at the food on the table and felt a sudden surge of anger. He was the commander-in-chief of the army on which so many lives depended. Why couldn’t he take care of himself properly? What if he fell ill due to malnutrition or from eating cold food? What then would become of his army of 100,000 soldiers?
"Hm, I’ve been eating your beef sauce for the past few days, and at noon I wanted to eat something light."
Nangong Yi looked embarrassed and muttered an explanation to the young girl.
It was his lunch. He gave the beef sauce she cooked to his soldiers that night. As the commander-in-chief, he was committed to share weal and woe with the soldiers; he couldn’t eat meat by himself in his tent while the soldiers were eating cabbage. Cai Wei sent the shop assistant to deliver a letter to him during lunchtime and he was so happy that he forgot to eat. Then he was busy running drills and overlooked the unfinished food. And now, she had found out.
"What was it you wanted to say to me earlier?"
Cai Wei took a seat on that simply cold ’bed’ and asked Nangong Yi about what he wanted to say to her outside earlier.
Nangong Yi coughed once and sat down next to her, took her hand and held it in his palm. He affectionately stroked it.
"When we met last time, I was so immersed in looking at you that I forgot to ask how you were able to come here. Did you come specifically to find me?"
Hearing his question, Cai Wei’s expression cooled. She snorted and said, "I faked my death to escape a forced marriage!"
"Faked your death? Escaped marriage?"
Nangong Yi’s face darkened as he quickly caught the two keywords.
Cai Wei didn’t conceal anything and explained in detail about how she was conferred as Princess An Le, how she was betrothed, how she was poisoned by Zhao Yang, and how she escaped. While speaking, she kept an eye on Nangong Yi’s expression. She was really curious to see what a man would think about her story.
Nangong Yi’s face was terribly upset. He went from utter disbelief to uncontrollable anger to being heartbroken with pain. His expressions changed rapidly, and his mood was incredibly turbulent.
He was outraged at Imperial Father’s duplicity and fickleness, and towards Imperial Mother’s deeds towards his little girl. Fortunately, Imperial Mother’s conspiracy failed. Otherwise, if she had really been married off to Liaodan, he would have disregarded everything to find her, by any means necessary. He was also deeply pained for Zhao Yang; his greatly cherished younger sister had stooped to such a level where she poisoned his little girl to kill her for a wild beast of a man. She shamelessly tricked the savage into drinking the warming room wine, doing that disgraceful thing.
