Chapter 470: Chapter 470 Entrusting more (4)_1
"What should we do then? Do we just stand by and watch her, allowing her to bring disaster to our mansion?" Madam Wang retorted.
"Alas, we can only take it one step at a time, hopefully King Qin will take her away soon. Then, we won’t have to worry anymore!"
Cai Wei returned to Changchun Garden with the maid that Female Doctor Dou and Nangong Yi had sent her, receiving warm welcomes from her mother and Fei’er. She took the opportunity to introduce them to her mother and sister.
She didn’t reveal their backgrounds, only saying that they needed more help at home so she took the initiative to buy two more servants.
The maid that Nangong Yi gave her was named Huan Qiu, around fifteen to sixteen years old, plain-looking, and quiet, barely noticeable.
Lady Du and Fei’er were pleased with the additional help at home. The two were arranged to stay in the room of Xiao Qing and Xiao Hong, although it was a bit cramped, it was manageable.
Once they had settled the two, Lady Du and Cai Fei couldn’t wait to pull Cai Wei aside and ask about her experience at the palace.
Cai Wei fell silent. Indeed, many events had transpired during her visit to the palace, but most of them were not things she could share with them for fear of alarming them.
Thus, after a moment of thought, she only mentioned the part where her dance received much praise. She even showed her mother and sister the blood jade bracelet that the Empress had rewarded her with.
Seeing this, Lady Du was naturally delighted. She carefully removed the bracelet from her daughter’s wrist and wrapped it in her handkerchief.
"This is a gift from the Empress Dowager herself. I will keep it safe for you. You can’t just wear it casually on your wrist. If it gets damaged, it could be a severe crime... even leading to your execution..."
Cai Wei pondered in annoyance. On this trip to the palace, she had unknowingly committed countless offenses that could cost her her life. She wondered when the Empress would come after her.
And there was Saknu. She had injured his vital parts; that savage wouldn’t let it go so easily. Who knows how he would seek revenge on her!
Well, never mind, she decided not to dwell on those annoying matters. At present, she was still feeling unwell, probably due to excessive menstruation. It would be best to lie down and rest for a while.
After exchanging a few words with her mother, Cai Wei excused herself, stating that she was tired and needed to take a rest.
Hearing this, with her daughter’s need in mind, Lady Du left the bedroom to prepare dinner.
By evening, just after Cai Wei woke up, Steward Cao came to the Changchun Garden. After paying his respects to Lady Mei and Lady Du, he passed on a message that the Duke of the Country, seeing them living in cramped quarters, had decided to move them to the ’Tingxiang Tingzhao’ in the East Courtyard.
The East Courtyard was where the legitimate sons resided. The eldest, second, and third masters of the Du family all lived there, as did the sisters Du Wanqiu, Du Wanyue, and Du Wanru.
Although the scenery was undoubtedly better, and living space was more spacious and bright, it was filled with unsavory people and events. Cai Wei preferred to stay in the small Changchun Garden, avoiding getting mixed up with all of them. Thus, she politely declined.
Lady Du had no intention of moving to the Tingxiang Tingzhao either. Cai Wei’s refusal was in line with her wishes, so she gave Steward Cao a handful of melon seeds and sent him on his way.
"Look at these people. They’re so used to looking down on us. Now that they see our sister has gained the favor of the Empress Dowager, they’re even willing to let us live in the main hall!" Cai Fei said contemptuously.
Madam Du sighed, "That’s just how things are. That’s why I hope Wen’er and Wu’er will study hard and have a good future. I don’t expect others to worship us. I just hope that we won’t be stepped on in this lifetime!"
Not long after Steward Cao left, he returned.
"Fourth Aunt, Young Miss Biao, Duke of the Country requests your presence."
Cai Wei replied, "I am tired from my trip to the palace today. I will go and pay respects to the Duke of the Country tomorrow. As for moving to the new courtyard, could you please tell the Duke of the Country, Steward Cao, that we are accustomed to living here and don’t wish to move? Please ask him not to worry about this matter anymore!"
Steward Cao laughed and said, "Duke of the Country has invited the Fourth Aunt and Young Miss Biao, not for the matter of moving, but for something else."
"What else?"
Madam Du started to feel uneasy.
This was the first time since she returned to the Duke of the State’s Mansion that her father had summoned her. The last time was over a decade ago when she was still an unmarried girl. Her father commanded her to marry the old king as a concubine. Thus, the news of her father summoning her instinctively instilled fear in Lady Du.
Seeing Lady Du’s worried look, Steward Cao laughed and reassured, "Fourth Aunt, don’t worry, it’s good news, very good news indeed. The Duke has already sent someone to call the son-in-law back from the restaurant. You’ll know once he’s back."
