Chapter 347: Chapter 347 Farewell without saying Goodbye Second Watch(3)_1
Mu Zhongqing and his wife had also risen, and they were both surprised when they found that Nangong Yi had left without saying goodbye.
Cai Wei explained that the master had urgent matters to attend to and had left last night. Since it was so late, her parents had already gone to bed, so he did not want to disturb them to say goodbye. He thus had her convey the message to them.
Although Mu Zhongqing regretted Nangong Yi’s sudden departure, he didn’t have the leisure to dwell on it now. His main concern was the marriage proposal made by Huo Yuan- what was his daughter’s opinion on this matter? She seemed willing, but she had not given any clear indication of her thoughts, so he did not dare to agree rashly. He decided to probe her further and find out her exact thoughts before making a visit to the magistrate.
During the meal, Lady Du brought up the matter again, asking how her daughter wanted to respond to the Prefect Han’s proposal.
This time, Cai Wei answered in a straightforward manner, simply stating "Reply!"
"What? Reply?"
Lady Du said in disbelief: "But didn’t you just yesterday....?"
"Did I accept this matrimonial proposal yesterday?" Cai Wei asked with a nonchalant smile.
Lady Du was at a loss for words. Indeed, even though their daughter had been ambiguous in her response yesterday, she hadn’t accepted anything. It might be that she and her husband were overthinking it all.
"Wei’er, matters of marriage aren’t to be taken lightly. It needs to be carefully considered before giving a response," Mu Zhongqing solemnly told his daughter.
Cai Wei laughed, "Dad, just rest assured. Your daughter is not confused. If there really is a good opportunity, I won’t let it slip."
Upon hearing his daughter’s response, Mu Zhongqing’s mind was set at ease. After breakfast, he left to reply to Prefect Han’s letter at the Prefect’s mansion.
Cai Wei, having promised Huo Yuan to help him establish nursing homes, decided, despite his presumptive proposal to her, to commence with their public affair and separate it from their private issues. She thus determined to stay in Lin’an Prefecture, help Huo Yuan establish the nursing home before departing.
Lady Du disapproved of her daughter’s decision to assist Huo Yuan with the establishment of the nursing homes. After all, they had just refused his marriage proposal. To now work with him might stir gossip. As a boudoir maiden, her daughter ought to maintain a distance.
However, Cai Wei was resolved to help establish the nursing home before leaving. Lady Du couldn’t argue with her. Besides, she herself was not strict with her words. Once she understood that her daughter was doing charitable work, she eased her stance after a little persuasion.
After breakfast, Cai Wei hired a horse carriage and went to Huo Yuan’s residence to discuss the matter of the nursing home. Huo Yuan greeted her with an unembarrassed smile when he saw her.
Cai Wei was also a magnanimous person. Since he did not bring up their matter, she did not mention it either, only discussing the establishment of the nursing home.
They both agreed that to establish a nursing home, the house should be bought first. The thriving city of Lin’an was much populous and consequently had more beggars than other cities. To establish a nursing home there, at least a large mansion capable of accommodating a hundred or so beggars was needed.
After some discussion, Huo Yuan sent a boy to fetch the most renowned impartial person in Lin’an city. After inquiring about some houses, he took Cai Wei along in the carriage to view some houses.
The price of housing in Lin’an Prefecture was incredibly high, indeed incomparable to that in Qingyun Town. They viewed several houses, but either the prices were too high or the houses were too small. They spent until noon without finding a suitable house.
Seeing that it was approaching noon, Huo Yuan with a light smile said: "Today has been quite hectic for you, little sister. How about I be the host and treat you to a good meal at noon—it can be my way of rewarding you for your efforts, how about that?"
