Chapter 241: Chapter 241 - Celebrating the New Year (5)_1
Before he could finish grumbling, Cai Wei coldly interrupted him.
"Grandfather, you saw how big our horse carriage is. With four bundles, and our family of six all crammed in, there’s no room left for anything else. These aren’t immediate necessities. I could go to the market after the sixth day of the month to buy and bring them here. It’s the same," she said.
On hearing this, Mu Zhongli hastily interjected, "Actually, if it is inconvenient for you, you could give me the silver. I can go buy these things for you. After all, I have a horse carriage, and it’s not like I’d exploit your money."
Mu Zhongqing took a glance at his elder brother’s avaricious look and said lightly, "The market doesn’t open until the sixth, where exactly are you planning to buy these things now?"
"..."
Mu Zhongli was left speechless by his brother’s retort and awkwardly sat down.
Lady Mu Bai felt displeased seeing her beloved eldest son being backed into a corner. Furthermore, she was also worried about being tricked by Cai Wei, which would lead to disappointment. So, she interjected on behalf of her son, "I think your elder brother’s idea is fantastic. You are busy with your business on normal days. Where would you find the time to buy these things? Wouldn’t it be better to give the money to your elder brother and let him buy them for you?"
"Exactly, exactly..."
Mu Zhongli bobbed his head like a chicken pecking at rice, agreeing eagerly.
Cai Wei glanced sideways at the old lady and said, "No need for my uncle to bother. We run a restaurant business and have dependable sources from rice shops where we can buy cheap grains. This is something that uncle can’t achieve."
Her words left Mu Zhongli red-faced. He didn’t know whether she was flaunting her extensive connections or mocking his inability to buy such basic necessities.
If this had happened in the past, he would have blown his top when Cai Wei dared to talk to him like this. However, ever since he experienced Cai Wei’s fierceness, he genuinely felt apprehensive toward her. It was as if her every frown and smile carried lethal force, sending a chill down his spine.
He sat awkwardly for a while before suddenly suggesting to his daughter, "Ping’er, why don’t you take your sister to your room and play for a while? We adults need to have a chat."
Upon hearing that Mu Zhongli wanted to get rid of her, Cai Wei suspected that he was up to something. Afraid to speak in her presence, he was using the excuse of her playing in Cai Ping’s room to talk to Mu Zhongqing and his wife in private.
Although Cai Ping despised Cai Wei, she had no choice but to obey her father’s command. So, she got up, looked at Cai Wei indifferently and dismissively, and asked, "Big sister, may I have the honor of inviting you to my room for a small talk?"
Cai Wei nodded and laughed, "Sure thing!" She then took Wu’er’s hand, wore a smile on her face, and followed Cai Ping to her boudoir.
Cai Ping lived in the right wing, occupying two rooms. The two rooms on the left were the bedrooms of Mu Chongcai and Mu Chongfu.
Upon entering the room, Cai Wei glanced around briefly. Seeing nothing of interest, she withdrew her gaze, sat down on a stool, cradled Wu’er, and began to play with him.
Watching Cai Wei act with such nonchalance – as if she were not even worth her attention – Cai Ping couldn’t help feeling enraged. However, she remembered her grandfather and father’s words: she needed to suppress her anger and coax Cai Wei, obtaining the silver was the priority!
Yet, each time she looked at Cai Wei’s porcelain-like little face, her almond-shaped eyes, and her petal-like small mouth; each time she felt a burning jealousy at Cai Wei’s beauty. The more she thought about how Cai Wei had turned her father and brothers against her, sullying her family’s reputation to the point where she didn’t even have a suitor, the deeper her resentment grew. She wished she could scratch Cai Wei’s gaudily dressed face.
Cai Ping stayed silent, and since Cai Wei didn’t feel like engaging with her, she just held Wu’er and gently rocked him, ensconcing the room in an eerie calm.
