Chapter 227: Chapter 227: Young Master Huo’s sweetheart (5)_1

Seeing that the horse had calmed down, Cai Wei climbed onto it, gave the reins a shake and the horse neighed, sprinting off like an arrow straight towards the direction of the county town.

On the official road to the county town, High Catcher rode on horseback, cursing under his breath.

"Damn it, criminal scoundrels, making me leave during the New Year’s celebrations for this official duty, and not a single benefit to it, it must be my bad luck!"

While cursing, he lashed his horse whip at Zhang Biaotou, splitting open his cotton-padded clothes, revealing the cotton inside.

Zhang Biaotou walked in a daze, not even frowning, as if it wasn’t him that was being whipped.

At this moment, his heart was filled with the image of his gray-haired old lady being carried away unconscious, and the sight of his wife and children crying their hearts out. How could he still care about his own humiliation? He knew that being taken to the county government office was ominous, and his elderly mother had to endure the pain and the humiliation of all her sons being imprisoned. How will his wife and children survive in the future?

Behind him, his brothers were also hanging their heads, sharing his extreme pain, which deepened with every thought, making their steps heavier and slower.

"Damn you, keep up!"

One of the Yamen runners saw their pace slowing down, raised his horse whip and lashed it on Zhang Wu Lang’s face. The skin of Zhang Wu Lang’s face split open and blood flowed down his cheek onto his clothes, staining a large portion red.

Wu Lang frowned but said nothing. He continued walking numbly, with blood dripping down his face.

"Heh, you’re indeed tough."

One Yamen runner laughed mockingly, "Given such toughness, why did your escort mission get hijacked? Clearly you all colluded with the bandits and swallowed up the people’s ginseng..."

Another Yamen runner urged, "Qin Liuzi, stop yapping with these vermin who are to be beheaded. It’s freezing cold, I’m sure you don’t want to freeze your teeth. We should hurry back to the county and report to Master Li, that’s the right course."

Qin Liuzi yelled, "You think I want to linger out in the cold? I’d love to hurry back, but we need these damned prisoners to keep pace. Damn it, they’re supposed to be escorts, yet they’re slower than women."

High Catcher sneered, "If the prisoners are slow, it’s because you Yamen runners are lazy. Mark my words, give them a good whip, and they will quicken their pace."

"Really?"

Qin Liuzi asked with a smile, swinging the whip in his hand lightly, hinting at his ill intentions.

"Try it and you’ll know!" Another Yamen runner laughed ominously.

"Fine, let’s try it then!"

A few Yamen runners, riding their horses, surrounded Zhang Biaotou and his brothers with their whips, laughing darkly.

They were frustrated: These damned criminals had brought them out in the cold with not even a single copper coin to be bribed, and now they had to escort them against the chill. It was infuriating and they felt the need to teach them a lesson. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have a good year!

Zhang Biaotou knew what was about to happen. He clenched his fist, closed his eyes in humiliation, realizing he was powerless to change anything. All he could do was maintain his last shred of dignity. He refused to beg the Yamen runners for mercy, or to bow his head. He kept his back straight and stood there, waiting for the whip to come down.

"Heh! At least you’ve got some backbone. Let’s see if you’re still tough after I’m done with you!"
