Chapter 138: Chapter 138: Strolling through the Night Market(5)_1
Mu Zhongli couldn’t resist his little son’s foggy expressions, so he took out the purse Lady Du had given him, and counted out twenty copper coins to hand over.
The street vendor quickly counted up twenty hoops and handed them over, saying with enthusiasm, "Sir, please."
Mu Zhongli divided the hoops amongst the four children, telling them to toss at whatever they liked while he watched from the side.
As soon as Wu’er had the hoop in his hand, he couldn’t wait to throw it at the little turtle. However, due to his young age and limited strength, none of his five throws hit the mark. The furthest he was able to cast a hoop was still a bit off from the nearest prize.
Wu’er was disappointed, his mouth slightly pouted and his eyes red, looking like he was on the verge of crying.
Seeing this, Wen’er comforted him, saying, "Don’t worry, big brother will help you, just wait." He wanted to satisfy his role as the big brother by fulfilling his younger brother’s wish, so he concentrated all his strength into several throws. However, the end result was not much better than Wu’er’s attempts. He didn’t manage to snag the desired little turtle but unintentionally got a roughly crafted clay horse instead.
The street vendor earned ten copper coins with delight, his brows raised in a smile as he handed over the little clay horse he had crudely shaped himself.
"Oh, congratulations, young master. This is your prize. Please take it!"
Wen’er was a proud boy. He glanced at the creature that could be mistaken for either a dog or a donkey, his expression froze for a moment before he turned away.
Cai Fei had her eyes on a pink and white silk flower, but she hoped more to help her younger brother get his desired prize. Therefore, she focused her energy and aimed forcefully towards the little turtle. However, she didn’t succeed and unexpectedly ended up snagging a lacquerware hairpin.
She held the hairpin happily, offering it to Lady Du.
"Mom, keep this for yourself."
Lady Du touched her own headscarf and smiled bitterly "I don’t know when my hair will be long enough to need it, you should keep it."
"Then, older sister, you should wear it. I am still young, a head rope works just fine for me."
Cai Wei accepted the hairpin, observed it, and found it of fine craftsmanship. Although it wasn’t very high class, it looked much better than the wood or bamboo hairpins they usually used.
She put the hairpin in Cai Fei’s hair, shook the hoop in her own hand, and said, "Older sister has her own favourite stuff, you should keep this hairpin for yourself."
After saying these words, a hoop flew from her hand. After spinning a few times in the air, it precisely enclosed the little turtle that Wu’er desired. Wu’er, overjoyed, immediately jumped up.
The street vendor watched as the little turtle was won, his face reflecting anguish.
Most of the people who played hoop toss were children, only he knew how big of a help the live little turtle was for his business.
"Miss, your little turtle."
He handed the little turtle over reluctantly. Cai Wei did not accept, looking gently at the excited Wu’er. "You take it."
Wu’er excitedly accepted the little turtle, cradled it in his palms, and started petting it lovingly...
"Wen’er, what do you like? Big sister will snag it for you."
Wen’er had originally wanted to win something for his younger brother to show off his prestige as the oldest brother. But having failed, he was now being offered help. Although he was feeling somewhat suffocated, being a child, he couldn’t resist the allure of the fun objects. He grudgingly pointed at a nine-linked ring in the distance, "I want that."
"Alright!"
Wen’er’s petulant expression didn’t escape Cai Wei’s notice. She chuckled to herself as she threw a hoop that landed precisely over the nine-linked ring that Wen’er wanted.
"Wow, older sister, you’re really terrific!"
Wen’er received the nine-linked ring and couldn’t help cheering for his sister.
Cai Wei smiled and threw another hoop, snagging the silk flower that Fei’er had been eyeing.
"Fei’er, this silk flower is something big sister snagged for you, hold onto it!"
Now, the street vendor selling the hoop toss could no longer maintain his composure. This young lady made every shot, snatching three items in a row. Combined with the hairpin that the other girl had won earlier, they already racked up a total of twenty copper coins. If they continued, he was afraid he’d start losing money...
Thankfully, Cai Wei’s fourth and fifth throws missed their mark. The vendor sighed in relief. Fortunately, she didn’t snag anything else, or else he really would have incurred a loss!
After playing hoop toss, everyone excitedly returned to their parents with their prizes. Mu Zhongqing examined Cai Wei with speculation, hesitated for a moment, and asked: "Wei’er, how did you do it?"
Cai Wei had no intention of hiding her martial arts skills from her family anymore. They would find out sooner or later, so it was better to let them know now so they could feel more at ease about their upcoming move to the capital.
However, she couldn’t tell the entire truth. In her lifetime, there couldn’t be a second person who knew about her ability to travel through space. As for her identity as a time traveller, she also hadn’t planned to tell anyone, so she could only resort to a white lie to explain.
"When I was younger, I accidentally met a reliable outsider on the mountain behind our house. I started secretly practicing martial arts with him behind everyone’s back. So, tossing a few hoops is not a big deal for me."
"When did this happen? How come I didn’t know about it?" When Lady Du heard that her well-behaved daughter had secretly trained with a stranger, she became anxious, her voice rising several pitches unintentionally.
"Older sister, does this outsider take disciples? Can you ask him if he can take me under his wing?" Wen’er was eager about the legendary outsider.
"Wei’er, where is this outsider now? When did you two meet? What was his name? Was he male or female?" Mu Zhongqing asked with a serious expression, expressing doubt about the outsider Cai Wei had mentioned.
"..."
Cai Wei got a headache, finally understanding the truth behind the saying, ’one lie needs a thousand more to support it.’
