Chapter 1224: Chapter 1230: Situ Changge (5)
On the other side, Xiangyun stiffened, her eyes stretched wide in disbelief, hardly daring to believe her ears. The man who appeared honest and decent was actually a fraudster. He had just swindled her silver and now was insulting her, tarnishing her virtue. How could someone be so wicked?
Nanny Xie’s eyes reddened, and with a fierce motion, she rolled up her sleeves and charged out.
Although she was only Xiangyun’s nanny, in her heart, Xiangyun was dearer to her than her own biological daughter. Xiangyun was the one she had breastfed, the one she had coaxed into growing up, the individual closest and dearest to her. Even if it cost her life, she would not allow others to slander her!
Seeing Nanny Xie with red eyes running out, Xiangyun snapped out of her shock. She grabbed the wine pot from the table and was about to rush out when Cai Wei, with her quick reflexes, held her back.
"Xiangyun, leave this to me. Changge, go check on Nanny Xie. Liu Xi, take my name badge to Ying Tianfu and ask Master Zhao to send a team of constables!"
Just as Situ Changge and Liu Xi had left, next door erupted with Nanny Xie’s scolding and the sounds of a brawl: "You heaven-damned scoundrels, daring to ruin our Madam’s reputation, this old lady will fight you to the end....."
Xiangyun quivered with rage, pointing to the neighboring room, and her voice broke as she spoke, "Cai Wei... Cai Wei... they... they..."
"Rest assured, I will make sure they learn their lesson!"
Cai Wei adjusted Xiangyun’s hood properly and led her out of the private room. Before they could exit, they heard screams, howls of agony, and the distinct sounds of bones cracking from next door. Xiangyun suddenly clutched Cai Wei’s hand tighter: "Nanny Xie, Nanny Xie is still inside!"
"Don’t worry, Situ will take care of her!"
Cai Wei swiftly led her downstairs to the counter, lifted her own hood, and told the shopkeeper, "The restaurant is closed for business today. Evacuate the current customers immediately and don’t allow any more in!"
It was almost mealtime, and once the guests would start to arrive, it would get noisy and crowded. If any word that could damage Xiangyun’s clean reputation slipped out, it would be disastrous. Therefore, Cai Wei had the current customers evacuated and had several guards from Duke Li Guo’s Mansion wait with Xiangyun in the horse carriage until she could resolve the matter.
Sitting back in the horse carriage, Xiangyun felt a mix of anger, pain, and a sense of being wronged. She silently began to wipe away tears. She had thought he was a poor but honorable man, had even shed sympathetic tears for him, and had scolded the upright Shopkeeper Situ on his behalf. But who would have expected him to be such an obscene fraudster, who not only cheated her of her money and sympathy but also came after her reputation? The world was decaying, human hearts were growing more corrupt!
As she wept, Nanny Xie opened the carriage curtain and came in, sobbing, "My child, that was a close call! If it wasn’t for the Empress’s presence, your clean name might have been completely destroyed..."
Wiping her tears away, Xiangyun inquired, "Where is Cai Wei?"
Nanny Xie responded, "The Empress is helping Shopkeeper Situ deal with those ruffians!"
Upon mentioning the punishment of the thugs, Nanny Xie’s eyes gleamed, and she said, "I didn’t expect Shopkeeper Situ to be so capable. He seems so gentle and refined, yet he fought brilliantly. None of those scoundrels stood a chance against him. A huge man, as tall as a tower, just collapsed after a single blow from Situ, spitting blood and unable to get up. And the Empress, such a small and slender woman, fought better than men. She snapped the arm of a burly man taller than her with a ’crack’. That was awesome. No wonder she became the Empress..."
Listening, admiration shone in Xiangyun’s eyes. She sniffled and declared, "I want to be a woman like Cai Wei in the future."
The Prefect of Ying Tianfu arrived promptly. Cai Wei handed over the thugs, who looked like dead dogs, and decreed sternly, "They must be strictly investigated. Bring to light all the bad deeds they’ve done before; they must not be treated with leniency!"
Master Zhao complied with the order, dragging the thugs back to Yingtian Prefecture Yamen for interrogation. Cai Wei had the shop assistants tidy up the tables and chairs, and then welcomed Xiangyun and the others back in.
Back in the private room, before Xiangyun could speak, Nanny Xie, tears streaming down her face, thanked Cai Wei profusely, "All thanks to the Empress for taking righteous action; otherwise, our Young Madam’s good name would have been ruined by those damned bastards. I have nothing to offer in return but will set up an Immortal Plaque for the Empress at home and burn incense daily..."
"Pop--"
Liu Xi laughed and suggested, "Nanny, you’d better have the Empress’s portrait painted on the plaque, and each day, place yellow and white chrysanthemums on the offering table to truly show your earnestness!"
"I’ll do just that when I go back!" agreed Nanny Xie without fully grasping what custom Liu Xi referred to. But seeing the Empress tolerate him, she assumed that he must be a confidant of the Empress and thus readily agreed.
Cai Wei twitched the corner of her mouth and quickly said, "No need for that. If you do set up a plaque, it should be for Shopkeeper Situ. It was he who first warned your Young Madam not to be deceived and then gallantly stepped in to help her vent her anger and rescued you!"
