Chapter 244: Chapter 245: Digging a Mouse Hole 6

Chen Jianye scratched his head in confusion: "I have no idea what mom is thinking. Who would ever complain about having too much food? But since dad and mom have spoken, we just have to go along with it."

"Okay." Li Chunhua nodded, looking at her young son dreamily sleeping by the side and smiled joyfully: "This must be another blessing brought by Jinbao."

Chen Jianye emphatically agreed, as these positive strokes of luck had never occurred in succession before Guibao was born!

In the next room, Zhou Zhaodi was also discussing with her husband: "Such an unexpected windfall, it would even awaken me from sleep with laughter."

As she laughed, she started to hum a melody happily,

"Indeed!" Chen Jianye laughed along, "But I just don’t get it, why won’t mom dig out the rest of the mouse holes?"

Although Zhou Zhaodi also felt it was a pity, she trusted mother-in-law’s judgment: "The way mom’s arranged things, she must have her reasons. And we’re not in a rush. I don’t believe the grains will sprout legs and run off, do you?"

Then, suddenly lowering her voice, she said: "Listen, I’m going to go back home tomorrow morning, tell my family about the grains in the mouse holes so they can dig out theirs."

Though her parents hadn’t come to borrow grains for several days, which implied they weren’t starving, their situation clearly wasn’t abundant.

Any additional grain would certainly be a boon.

Chen Jiandang nodded in agreement: "We should tell my parents-in-law."

After all, the two communes were far apart, so her family wouldn’t bother traveling such a distance.

It’s better to have those grains benefit her parents rather than the rats or others!

The first room, however, was eerily silent.

Zhao Mei and Chen Jianguo are well-behaved; they did as their parents instructed without question.

However, she was currently concerned about the grain at her parents’ house. While they had ample grain here at her in-laws, her own family was yet to secure any.

Zhao Mei’s face was scrunched up like a bitter gourd as she whispered to Chen Jianguo, "Should I secretly ask my mom to lend some grain to my family? They have less grain this year, surely they’ll go hungry."

The family had two new grandsons this year; the little grain they had was not enough for a dozen people.

Upon seeing his wife’s worried face, Chen Jianguo, got out of bed and put on his shoes, "You don’t have to ask, I’ll do it."

Even though Ma Xiulian had expressed several times that she wouldn’t lend any grain, they had found a lot more food today. Surely, they could spare some.

Most importantly, Chen Jianguo feared that if Zhao Mei directly asked Ma Xiulian for food, she might get scolded. Being scolded by one’s mother-in-law is always a hurtful experience.

After all, if he were to be scolded by his mother, he wouldn’t be bothered, there was no ill-will between them.

When he arrived, Ma Xiulian and Chen Dazhu had just settled down, preparing to put out the lamp and go to sleep.

"Mom, can we lend some grain to Zhao Mei’s family?"

Chen Jianguo was a sincere person, straightforward in his speech.

Ma Xiulian immediately shook her head and replied: "No."

"Oh."

Chen Jianguo nodded gloomily and turned to walk out the door,

But just as he was about to step out, Ma Xiulian called him back: "What’s the rush? Who told you to leave?"

So he turned back obediently, waiting patiently for his mother to speak.

"We won’t lend out the grains we have at home, but you can tell your wife’s family to look for grains in the mouse holes."
