Chapter 222: Chapter 223 Surrounded by a Wolf Pack 2

These days, the sun has been fierce, so the grain has dried fast. This afternoon, everyone used sacks to store the grains away.

By dawn tomorrow, after sorting out the weight, the harvest can be distributed among the households.

Now that the grain has been stored, everyone can finally relax. So, everybody fell asleep as soon as they laid their heads on their pillows this night.

However, in the middle of the night, the sudden knocking at the door woke everyone in several rooms.

Zhao Mei, who was closest to the door, quickly got up and took a kerosene lamp to open the door, and was stunned at what she saw.

The one knocking on the door was actually that monkey from last time!

It seemed to have been frightened, with all its fur standing on ends, making noises, appearing very anxious. As it continued to chitter, its eyes kept darting around, as if searching for something.

Zhao Mei was startled, and she urgently shouted, "Father, Mother, Jianye, come out quickly. The monkey that stole the fish last time is back, come see it quickly!"

Her shouting brought everyone out of their rooms.

"Keep your voice down, Guibao is still sleeping," Ma Xiulian said upon seeing the monkey, her face expressing surprise, "Why did it come back?"

The monkey was holding a white fluffy item in one hand while gesticulating towards them with the other, attempting to express something.

Li Chunhua casually looked outside the door and immediately exclaimed shrilly, "Ah!!!!!"

"What are you shouting for?" Ma Xiulian scolded, furrowing her brows. She didn’t want to wake Guibao.

Li Chunhua continued to back away while pointing towards the door, her hand shaking uncontrollably. "L-look, what is that?"

Ma Xiulian followed the direction of her pointing, and her heart skipped a beat!

Outside the yard, there were two pairs of eyes glowing green, cruel and bloodthirsty.

Wolves!!

They opened their mouths, revealing their ferocious teeth, growling ominously and slowly advancing.

Li Chunhua screamed again, "What do we do? The wolves have come."

Her face was pale and distressed, and she began shouting a bit hysterically. The sight of the approaching wolves turned everyone else ashen-faced as well.

Among everyone, Chen Dazhu was the quickest to react. He promptly shut the wooden door, then took a long drag on his tobacco pipe to calm his nerves.

There had been no sightings of wolves in the vicinity of the hill for years. He had thought that the wolves wouldn’t come down anymore.

After all, this wasn’t a disaster year, and food wasn’t scarce in the mountains.

The Chen brothers then also quickly leant their bodies against the door for added support.

Zhou Zhaodi and Zhao Mei were so scared, they stood frozen; the chill creeping up from their feet had spread throughout their bodies, giving them a persistent sense of coldness.

As the eldest son and leader, Chen Jianguo, despite being afraid, sneaked a peek outside through a crack in the door and noticed that the wolves were getting closer.

"They’re in the yard now."

He wiped the sweat from his forehead. Just one glance at those gleaming, cold eyes had soaked his undershirt with cold sweat.

Chen Jiandang also summoned the courage to look through the door crack, and immediately saw the sharp claws and teeth. Swallowing hard, he said, "They won’t suddenly charge in, will they?"

"No, they won’t. This door is made of the hardest pear wood. The wolves can’t charge in," Ma Xiulian feigned calm, "Let’s just stay here and not sleep tonight, and wait for them to leave."
