Chapter 220: Chapter 221: Everyone Comes to Borrow Food 4
Ma Xiulian shoved her away without hesitation.
She, who worked in fields for years, was as strong as a man. The old Mrs. Li, as thin as a piece of paper, fell sprawling on the ground as a result of the shove.
She immediately started screaming: "Someone help! Ma Xiulian is beating me up, even her own mother-in-law, you beat me like this, if you do not compensate me with grain, I will squat at your house and never leave!"
"Then you might as well sit around forever and ever." replied Ma Xiulian, not the slightest bit swayed by her dramatic spiel. She just walked towards the parlour.
The old Mrs. Li, gnashing her teeth, leapt to her feet and positioned herself in front of Ma Xiulian, saying threateningly: "If you do not lend me the grain today, I will die banging my head on your front door, and my ghost will haunt the Chen Family forever!!"
Having said that, she really began hitting her head against the wall, although not really hard, just pretending.
If it was anyone else with less nerve, they might have already agreed to lend her the grain because of her intimidation.
But Ma Xiulian rolled up her sleeves, grabbed Mrs. Li’s head and smashed it against the door frame, saying: "Fine! Today I will take you on, life for life!"
She used a bit of her strength, and Mrs. Li, as lightweight as a small chicken, could not resist at all and was forced to follow the direction of Ma Xiulian’s push and hit the wall.
After only a few hits, she felt a throbbing pain in her head, and her vision blurred. She cried out in a loud voice: "Ma Xiulian is trying to murder me!!"
Using all her strength, Mrs. Li broke free, stumbled back a few steps, and then began to curse sharply, "Families like yours, who wouldn’t even save a dying person, will definitely end up in a bad way – your daughters won’t get married, your sons will not find brides."
Ma Xiulian snatched a broom from the doorway and swung it at her, her face as black as the bottom of a pot, "I will tear your smelly mouth apart!"
Luckily for old Mrs. Li, she was fast enough to dodge the broom.
Seeing Ma Xiulian coming for her again with her face distorted with rage, she did not dare to linger around any more. Without even brushing the dirt off her body, she turned and bolted away as fast as she could.
If she couldn’t borrow the grain from her younger daughter’s in-law family, she could always go to the home of her older one!
Ma Xiulian snorted disdainfully and threw away the broom.
The minute she got rid of the grain-borrowing old Mrs. Li, to her surprise, the very next moment, Zhao Mei’s mother arrived.
Seeing her mother approaching, Zhao Mei went up to her at once: "Mom, what brings you here?"
"I heard that Chunhua has had another child, so I brought over some eggs." While talking, Zhao’s mother handed over a basket of eggs.
Ma Xiulian smiled warmly and said: "My dear in-laws, please come inside and have a seat."
After ushering everyone into the parlour, she turned to Zhao Mei and said: "Quickly brew a bowl of sweet water. Your mother has travelled a long way to be here, she must be thirsty."
Hearing the offer of sweet water, Zhao’s mother was particularly flattered. She quietly praised in her heart that the Chen family’s life was indeed getting better and better.
The warm water tasted sweet, and Zhao’s mother cherished every sip of it until she drained the bowl. Then she smiled sheepishly at Ma Xiulian: "Only when I visit your family do I have the good fortune to drain a bowl of sweet water."
Rural people cherished sweet food, but everyone was too poor. Whenever they did have a taste of something sweet, they would reserve it for the children. Zhao’s mother had almost forgotten the taste of this sweet water.
"All families are like this. When a sweet treat comes their way, they always save it for the children." Ma Xiulian remarked with understanding.
"I heard that Chunhua from your third branch gave birth to another plump grandson. Your family is indeed very blessed."
Zhao’s mother sincerely congratulated them, but thinking of Zhao Mei who had given birth to three daughters, her expression turned gloomy.
