Chapter 218: Chapter 219: Everyone Comes to Borrow Food 2

Two more days passed, and all the rice in the commune was finally harvested.

Every household mobilized all the labor they could for the harvest, and no one dared to take breaks. They quickly grabbed a piece of bread while eating at noon, then resumed work with their sickles.

Having worked seventeen or eighteen hours a day, everyone was utterly exhausted; they would fall asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillow.

However, the result of this frantic harvesting was that all the rice was gathered in just six days, which was almost twice as fast as before.

But even so, no one dared to relax yet.

The grains had to be dried completely.

If it was a normal year without pests, they might take a couple of days off before drying the grains. But now, they were afraid that locusts would come again.

Even though Zhao Mancao had arranged many people to guard the drying ground, people still felt insecure. They would check the drying ground now and then.

After the harvest, the meals were back to their previous standards, but no one complained.

"If it weren’t for the sudden death of the locusts this year, we wouldn’t even have brown rice to eat next year," someone said.

Zhou Zhaodi sighed deeply: "I heard that only our commune and the two adjacent ones had a good harvest. The others suffered some losses to varying degrees."

Ma Xiulian nodded: "Rumor has it that the harvest in the two communes in the neighbouring town was only half of last year’s. They’re going to have to tighten their belts this year."

At these words, Zhou Zhaodi looked relieved: "Thank God, our commune’s crops were spared by the locusts!"

Zhao Mei, however, looked worried, her mind obviously occupied.

Seeing this, Ma Xiulian affirmed in a stern voice: "There’s something I need to tell you in advance. The grains stored in our house are just enough for our big family, so no matter who comes to borrow grains, I will not lend them. Don’t make promises lightly, as to avoid any embarrassment later."

The in-laws of her daughters-in-law all had grain losses, more or less. If she lent grains to one family, she would have to lend to another!

And if other relatives found out, they would also come to ask for grains.

However, both Zhao Mei’s and Zhou Zhaodi’s in-laws endured minor grain losses. And they were both decent folks.

The main problem was on Li Chunhua’s side. Her family in the disaster-stricken area was shameless, and she could imagine them asking for grains without batting an eye.

Unfortunately, Chen Jianye was soft-hearted. He would certainly agree to lend the grains if her mother-in-law made a big fuss.

Thinking of this, she gave her third son a cautionary look and emphasized again: "Regardless of who the other party is, whether they scream or beg, we must not lend them any grain!"

Chen Jianye was embarrassed by her gaze and quickly lowered his head.

He was, after all, the only one with such a shameless mother-in-law!

When Chen Jianye returned to his room, he told Li Chunhua about it. She sat on the bed with a distressed look: "I don’t want to lend, but you know what my mother is like. She will definitely come to borrow."

Now that she had two sons, how could she bear to lend the grain to her parents!

"So what should we do?"

Chen Jianye was also very worried. After all, if his in-laws really pleaded with him, it would be difficult for him to keep on refusing.

Li Chunhua thought for a while and said: "When my mother comes to borrow grain, we’ll just stay in the room and pretend we don’t know she’s here. We absolutely can’t get involved in this."

In this way, her mother would not blame her, her own daughter, for not helping.

Chen Jianye hesitated for a moment, "Okay, if that’s what we must do."
