Chapter 520: Chapter 519: There’s a child here
Niuwa finally hung the shiny silver-plated "Lan" sign on the wooden stake display stand, and it was already forty minutes later.
Though it seemed easy to hang the samples, the actual operation was more troublesome than assembling the wooden stake display stand.
Each sample had its designated place, it needed not only to be positioned correctly but also to be secured firmly to prevent slipping.
"Sister Hehe, check it again for me." Niuwa wiped the sweat beads from his forehead and turned to speak to Lin Nianhe.
Lin Nianhe nodded, stepped back several paces for an overall check to ensure all samples were fine, then quickly returned to Niuwa, opening her arms.
Seeing Lin Nianhe’s gesture, Niuwa knew they were done. He couldn’t keep the grin off his face, feeling elated inside, yet he still took careful, measured steps back to Lin Nianhe and wrapped his hands around her neck.
"You’ve worked hard, baby. I’ll buy you a soda later." Lin Nianhe picked him up, put on his shoes, and wiped the sweat off his face.
Niuwa’s smile was brilliant as he took Lin Nianhe’s hand and said, "Sister Hehe, I’m very happy."
He always felt useless and thought Lin Nianhe brought him only out of partiality. Being able to help made him truly happy.
Lin Nianhe pinched his cheeks and lifted him, saying, "Come, look at the fruits of your labor."
She carried Niuwa back to the entrance, and unwittingly, he let out a "wow."
Their specially customized "Lan" sign was nearly twenty centimeters long and wide. It shone with a cool silver light, with every edge showcasing distinctiveness and proud mettle.
The hair accessories were arranged in an orderly fashion upon the branches, each surpassing the usual impressions of quality. They lay quietly on the branches, displaying their most beautiful aspects.
Niuwa covered his mouth in surprise and after a long moment said, "Sister Hehe, I think these hair accessories look better hung up than placed on a table."
"That’s all thanks to you and Second Uncle Li," Lin Nianhe said with a smile.
Around them, many people were already expressing their amazement. This was the most prominent location in the entire exhibition, hard for anyone to miss.
"The hair accessories from Lan County Textile Factory look so beautiful, I’ve never seen these before."
"My daughter bought a couple of hair accessories from Lan County Textile Factory before, but I’ve never seen these designs."
"They aren’t breaking the rules with this, are they? It wasn’t like this before."
"Like before? You plan to tie fabric to trees for display? Do you think that would look good? Wouldn’t that be like a makeshift umbrella stall?"
"Hmm... yeah, that’s true..."
Lin Nianhe didn’t talk to others anymore and took Niuwa back to their serene booth.
Wang Shumei and Wen Lan were truly cleaning aces. In just an hour, they cleaned the inside and outside of the booth completely, wiping the floor and tables until they shone, and the small "coral tree" was properly arranged on the booth.
They were worried about Lin Nianhe and Niuwa before and went over to take a look. Seeing them busily working in an orderly manner, they didn’t want to disturb and felt at ease to continue their work.
"You guys done?" Wang Shumei asked, handing over two water bottles and rubbed Niuwa’s head, "Good job."
Niuwa took the water bottles with both hands and smiled sweetly.
Wen Lan was tying up all the trash in a burlap sack, wiping sweat as she said, "You rest, I’ll go out and dump the trash."
"Let’s go together, there’s not much left to do here," Lin Nianhe said after taking a sip of water, "Let’s go have popsicles, then I’ll stop by my master’s place before we head back to the hotel."
"Don’t we need to keep an eye on things here?" Wen Lan looked with some concern at their painstakingly arranged coral tree.
In theory, during the expo, it was unlikely for anyone to willfully damage another person’s booth, and the Spring Trade Fair was a big deal—no one would look for trouble in such a setting.
Still, Lin Nianhe customarily made preparations in advance.
"Ah, I’d have forgotten if you didn’t remind me," Lin Nianhe said as she put down her water bottle and took out two big bags of individually packed hair accessories.
Now, their boxes were completely emptied.
Lin Nianhe tossed a bag to Wang Shumei and said, "You go left, I’ll go right."
"Easy peasy," Wang Shumei smiled and nodded.
Their task was simple – to give gifts.
The gifts had been prepared early in the morning, distributed according to factory departments, with twenty in each pack, all domestic styles. In the current climate where Lan County Textile Factory’s head flowers were hard to come by, there could hardly be a more suitable gift.
Naturally, the female comrades were happy, and the male comrades didn’t mind either. They couldn’t use them themselves, but they could take them back to their wives, daughters, and sisters.
After a round of gift-giving, when Lin Nianhe and Wang Shumei met up again, both were delighted.
"Now we can leave with peace of mind," Lin Nianhe said with a laugh.
Wang Shumei nodded with a smile, "Indeed, I’ve found everyone to be really nice. Factory Director Chu from Shanghai Textile Factory even gave me a pack of White Rabbit creamy candies."
"Let’s go, it’s so hot here I can barely breathe."
Lin Nianhe linked arms with Wang Shumei as they headed back to their exhibition space. Wen Lan had gone to throw away the trash. Seeing them return, she took the remaining gifts to put in a box, carrying the box with one hand and leading Niuwa with the other.
The crowd outside the venue was still thick; they quickly found a stall selling sodas and ice lollies.
It was much cooler outside than in the hall. A breeze swept by, carrying away the sweltering heat.
The group stood in a line, crunching on ice lollies.
"Hezi, what are we going to learn in class this afternoon?" Wen Lan asked casually.
"I don’t know either," Lin Nianhe shook her head, "I’m mainly wondering if it’s better to cover for Uncle Wong to leave or to ask for sick leave for him."
After pondering for a moment, Wang Shumei said, "Better to cover for him to leave. You can’t skip class, and with so many factory directors present, Uncle Wong can’t afford to be absent."
"That’s true." Lin Nianhe discarded her ice lolly stick and said to them, "Wait for me for a bit, okay? My mentor asked me to find him. I’ll be back soon."
"Sure, take your time. We’ve still got time; no rush."
"Mhm."
Lin Nianhe bought a few more bottles of soda and ice lollies and carried them to the machinery exhibition.
The heavy industry exhibition was quite different from the light industry one. Here, it was all men as far as the eye could see, and the noise was so loud it could almost lift off the roof. Compared to them, even the loudest moment at the textile section seemed quiet.
After stepping in, Lin Nianhe stopped, not knowing which direction to take next.
"Hey? Whose kid is this?" A burly man in a tank top, chewing on a cigarette, smiled at Lin Nianhe, "Whose are ya?"
Lin Nianhe: "I... I’m from Beijing Machinery Factory."
She had originally planned to find her mentor by gauging the concentration of smoke, but the smoke here was evenly distributed, with more smoking men than she had hairs on her head.
"Oh," the big guy turned back, lifted his arms high, and bellowed, "Third Uncle, your kid is here! Come and pick them up!"
His voice was so loud it left Lin Nianhe’s ears buzzing.
Lin Nianhe hastily sidestepped a little to keep some distance from the big guy.
It was really too chaotic here. The big guy yelled three or four times, but no one responded. He clicked his tongue, turned to Lin Nianhe, and said: "Come on, I’ll take you there."
"Th-thank you."
"Stay close, I won’t be looking for you if you get lost." The big guy said before turning around. He made his way through the crowd, shouting, "Hey, gents, do us a favor and move aside, there’s a kid here, watch out not to step on her."
Lin Nianhe: "..."
Don’t, step, on, her!
