Chapter 452: Chapter 451: Real Relatives
"Or... should I throw a tantrum?"
In the wind carrying the sweet and sour scent of candied hawthorns, Lin Nianhe’s eyes twinkled with a hint of laughter, gaze unwaveringly on Su Yuncheng.
Without a second thought, Su Yuncheng immediately shook his head: "If Uncle Lin disagrees, it must be because I am still lacking in some area. I just need to work harder. You shouldn’t quarrel with Uncle Lin and upset him."
Lin Nianhe’s smile grew wider as she said, "But don’t you think that if I made a fuss with him, this issue could be resolved very easily?"
"Indeed, it might be easier, but we should not resort to such methods."
Su Yuncheng pushed the bicycle over, gesturing for Lin Nianhe to sit on it.
Lin Nianhe sat on the bicycle with four strings of candied hawthorns, her gaze still fixed on Su Yuncheng’s face, waiting for him to elaborate.
As Su Yuncheng pushed the bicycle towards the Lin Family’s direction, his pace was unhurried, and he spoke as they walked: "I’m a man, how can I allow you to front the situation?"
"Just because of that?"
"Uncle Lin is your father. He loves you dearly, and I can’t just cause your family to be sad to make things easier for myself."
Looking at his earnest expression, Lin Nianhe’s smile bloomed.
She really does have a great eye for choosing men.
Amused by her own thoughts, she brought a skewer of candied hawthorns to his mouth: "Major Su’s words are very much to my liking, go on, have a candied hawthorn."
Su Yuncheng, with his hands busy pushing the bicycle, couldn’t take the candied hawthorn, so he bit one off directly from her hand.
He casually asked, "Are you close to Second Uncle Wang’s daughter?"
Lin Nianhe shook her head: "Not really."
"Then?"
"I brought back some products due next month when I came here, planning to stabilize the market in Beijing." Lin Nianhe smacked her lips, "If Second Uncle Wang doesn’t bring it up, I was planning to give it to them when visiting during the New Year."
When it comes to understanding human relationships, Lin Nianhe is quite adept.
Su Yuncheng chuckled softly and nodded: "Then later you take the items with you, and I’ll drop you off there."
He had no desire to mingle with other women—it was troublesome and unnecessary. He was only planning to wait for Lin Nianhe at the Wang Family’s doorstep.
The two of them had returned to change shoes, as Lin Nianhe, in her hurry buying the candied hawthorns, had stepped into a snow pile without noticing and Su Yuncheng insisted on taking her back to change her shoes.
Lin Nianhe wanted to fetch her Head Flower from her room, so she asked Su Yuncheng to wait in her room.
Having spent a lot of time together, they didn’t have much to say to each other, and Su Yuncheng followed her into her bedroom.
As it turned out, this was Su Yuncheng’s first visit to this room.
Her room was tidy and neat, with an entire wall of bookshelves. Besides books, there was also a violin case on the shelves. There was a single sofa by the window draped with a red-and-white checkered sofa cover. Su Yuncheng could almost imagine her lazily curled up on the sofa reading.
As Lin Nianhe searched the wardrobe for the Head Flower, Su Yuncheng paused momentarily at the desk, where he saw a piece of paper with a drawing of some strange pattern.
It wasn’t the Head Flower, but rather seemed like some sort of machine.
He picked it up to examine it closely but couldn’t make out its purpose. So he asked, "Nianhe, what is this that you’ve drawn?"
"Hmm," said Lin Nianhe as she came over with a small packet containing the Head Flower, glanced over and replied, "A hand-cranked corn dehusker. Just something I’ve been pondering over, I don’t know if it can actually be made."
She had been planning to make this device for a long time!
But when faced with mechanical knowledge, she was completely out of her depth, relying only on books from her spatial storage and online courses to teach herself.
However, it’s not a big issue. She’s a college student after all, and isn’t it true that students cram for exams in a week and manage to become proficient in eight different subjects?
This design for the hand-cranked corn dehusker was something she’d copied from a textbook, but the diagram was somewhat blurry, and she was still working on the details.
Surprised, Su Yuncheng looked at her: "You actually understand this stuff?"
Lin Nianhe’s gaze was clear: "I don’t, I told you it was all guesswork."
Su Yuncheng looked back at the drawing. After a moment of silence, he picked up a pencil from the table and, after some calculations on a piece of white paper, pointed to a spot on the blueprints and said to Lin Nianhe, "The gear here should be a bit larger, try it out with this data."
Lin Nianhe: "...!"
How did he know she had been pondering over the size of this gear?
And he calculated it so effortlessly!
This was a bit demoralizing!
At this moment, Lin Nianhe’s emotions were easy to read.
Su Yuncheng quickly explained, "Back in the military, an old chief of staff was very skilled in mechanics, and I learned a bit from him."
Lin Nianhe breathed a sigh of relief.
Alright, she could accept that reason and regained her lost confidence.
Lin Nianhe took the pencil and naturally seated herself in front of the table to start calculating.
While writing, she asked, "Brother Yuncheng, if there’s a chance to go to university in the future, would you go?"
Su Yuncheng truly hadn’t considered this question, he looked down at Lin Nianhe, "Would you go?"
"Mhm," Lin Nianhe nodded affirmatively, "Niuwa and I have agreed to apply for Peking University."
Su Yuncheng stood by her side, resting on the table as he watched her calculating, replying, "If I’m not needed in Hei Province by then, I’ll join you in applying for Peking University."
Lin Nianhe pursed her lips and laughed softly, subtly saying, "Then you’ll have to study hard."
"Okay, I’ll listen to Teacher Hehe."
Su Yuncheng’s voice carried a hint of amusement, and the low timbre was particularly enticing.
Lin Nianhe’s cheeks flushed, she buried her head even lower, her writing became slightly erratic.
That afternoon, the two of them didn’t go out again; they went through draft after draft, wrote down number after number, eventually making every figure on the blueprint of that hand-operated threshing machine unmistakably clear.
Lin Nianhe looked at the blueprints filled with numbers and suddenly remembered an important concern, "We don’t even know if this is feasible. We’ve calculated so much, but what if it doesn’t thresh?"
Su Yuncheng, while organizing the drafts, said, "I think it should work. From the blueprints and the data, it’s theoretically possible."
"Just lacking a prototype to test it out, right?" Lin Nianhe asked.
Su Yuncheng nodded, "Yeah."
"Where can we make it?"
"..."
That was indeed a good question.
Neither of them had enough clout to get a mechanical factory to experiment with them.
After a moment, both said in unison:
"Let’s ask Uncle Huang!"
Minister Huang: "This matter... you should ask the mechanical factory!"
Minister Huang shook his head as he put the blueprints back on the table, "How would I understand this?"
Lin Nianhe, smiling, pushed the blueprints back to him, "Uncle Huang, who in the mechanical factory knows who I am, how would they possibly agree to make something for us?"
Minister Huang appeared somewhat bemused and frustrated, "The mechanical factory isn’t something I manage."
Lin Nianhe pushed the blueprints forward again, "But don’t you think, if this corn threshing machine is really made, it could also be a good product for earning foreign exchange?"
Minister Huang stared at the blueprints, pondering for a moment, then said, "If you put it that way... The Factory Director is my neighbor’s nephew’s wife’s great-uncle."
Lin Nianhe: "Ah, that’s some real close kin!"
