Chapter 388: Chapter 387: Exciting Great Task of Defending the Village
Only a few people knew about the boar herd, and they silently picked up the acorns scattered around the village, pretending nothing was wrong while anxiously awaiting an answer.
In the evening, Feng Wei was not at home and was shivering while patrolling around. Principal Wu and Aunt Feng stayed in a room with Niuwa, while the room next to Su Yuncheng was moved into by Lin Nianhe.
Lin Nianhe sat on the warm kang, with a blanket over her legs and a military coat draped over her shoulders, using the dim light of a candle to lean over the kang table and write lesson plans.
She became increasingly annoyed as she wrote; the current textbooks really had nothing substantial, not even as good as those from ten years ago. She simply tossed the textbook aside, planning to select suitable content from the online courses of top-tier teachers on the tablet to teach the children.
She had just written a title on the draft paper when she heard faint footsteps outside the door.
"Nianhe, haven’t you slept yet?"
It was Principal Wu’s voice.
"Principal, please come in, I haven’t slept," Lin Nianhe responded.
Principal Wu pushed the door open, holding a lantern in her hand.
Wearing an old jacket, she held the draft paper and a book in her hands.
"Seeing you still awake, I came here to borrow some light," said Principal Wu with a smile.
As one of the few who knew the truth, Principal Wu couldn’t sleep and was also worried about Lin Nianhe—this girl was always bold, and she feared she might run out in the middle of the night. Seeing the light still on in her room, she simply came over to keep her company.
She placed the lantern on the kang table, adding another source of light, and the room immediately brightened.
"Quick, get on the kang," Lin Nianhe retracted her legs, "Cover yourself with the blanket, don’t catch a cold."
"Wow, it’s really warm," said Principal Wu as she climbed onto the kang and sat down opposite Lin Nianhe.
"Aunt Feng has made the kang very hot," Lin Nianhe said, as she got off the kang wearing her coat, "Sit, I’ll pour you a glass of water."
Principal Wu didn’t stop her, but smiled and looked at the draft paper, only seeing "New Curriculum Plan 1.0."
Principal Wu: "...?"
What is that?
Lin Nianhe poured a glass of hot water, then filled a hot water bottle for Principal Wu to hold, telling her, "You’re always coughing because of the cold, Niuwa mentioned that you cough several times every morning after being hit by the cold wind."
"It’s an old issue, not a big deal," Principal Wu didn’t care much about her own health, she was more concerned about what Lin Nianhe wrote, "Nianhe, what are you pondering?"
Lin Nianhe climbed back onto the kang using her hands and feet, stretching her legs into the blanket before replying, "I just feel that the current textbooks really have nothing substantial, I was thinking of using the ones from when I was studying..."
"Are you out of your mind?" Principal Wu’s face changed slightly, "Is it something you can use just because you want to?"
Lin Nianhe blinked her eyes without a word, just smiling softly at her.
Under the warm yellow light, Principal Wu was silent for a moment, then picked up the language textbook that Lin Nianhe had set aside.
Her fingers gently caressed the textbook’s cover, sighing, "But you’re right, the current textbooks really have nothing substantial... Elementary school might be fine, but in high school classrooms, either they’re reading newspapers or debating, no one studies real knowledge..."
With each word Principal Wu spoke, her brows furrowed a bit more.
The state of education was what concerned her most; she wanted to do a lot, but could do very little.
Seeing her expression, Lin Nianhe felt heartache and said, "Principal, actually I have an idea..."
...
After returning to the Victory Team with the boar meat, Cao Shijian headed straight for the small courtyard he shared with Wu Genmao, even before he entered, he started shouting, "Maomao, get the fire ready! The team hunted a boar today, got some boar meat! Over ten pounds!"
Wu Genmao came out looking bewildered, "What kind of boar gives over ten pounds of meat? Has the boar been eating fertilizer?"
Cao Shijian stood in the middle of the courtyard, yelling at the top of his lungs, "Could we possibly let wild boars eat such good stuff? We’ve hunted a group of wild boars! Ten of them!"
"Damn!"
Wu Genmao jumped in surprise, looking at Cao Shijian with a somewhat pitiful gaze, "Why didn’t you come back and call me when there was such excitement?"
"It didn’t take more than ten minutes in total, how could I have flown back to call you?" Cao Shijian gave him a look and then, recalling Lin Nianhe’s important instructions, he started making faces while looping his arm around his shoulder, about to enter the house.
Wu Genmao: "What’s with your twitchy eyes?"
"Tsk... your brain really is..."
Cao Shijian muttered softly, pulling Wu Genmao into the house.
He moved so quickly, he almost caused another catastrophic injury to Wu Genmao’s arm, which was nearly healed.
After dragging Wu Genmao inside, Cao Shijian, with eyes filled with excitement, relayed Lin Nianhe’s instructions to him.
Wu Genmao listened with brightening eyes.
Lately, he had been recuperating from his injury in the Victory Team, and his bones had gone soft! Cao Shijian was not in much better shape either; being the East Palace Chief was not easy, similar to minding children.
Now, finally, they had a thrilling mission to defend the village; how could they not be excited?
Although... it wasn’t their registered home village.
"Maomao, we must complete this task perfectly!"
"Shi Jian, we must work hard! We absolutely can’t drop the ball!"
Wu Cao, teary-eyed, the duo were quietly discussing how to stealthily accomplish the task while cooking meat...
"Did you boys strike it rich? Even stewing meat now!"
While they were deep in discussion, Cao Manfu’s voice came from outside.
Cao Shijian: "...?"
They hadn’t even finished planning; why had the team leader arrived already?
Cao Shijian quickly said, "Uncle, don’t come in yet, go around the block then come back!"
This man was too uncooperative; he should’ve waited until they finished planning!
Wu Genmao, being slightly cleverer, promptly cut him off with a nudge, chuckling as he went out to greet: "Uncle Cao, how come you’re here?"
"The whole village smells like meat, I just came to see," Cao Manfu, hands behind his back, struck a stance of deep concern, "Genmao, what’s going on with you two? Did you sneak up the mountain to set traps for rabbits?"
"I must tell you, not even a single rabbit, not even a rabbit’s hair; that’s community property! Eating alone is seizing community assets and harming community interests!"
Before they knew it, the courtyard was already surrounded by people.
Their eyes red, they stared fixedly at the kitchen, swallowing saliva.
It seemed like as soon as Wu Genmao admitted their meat came from the mountain, these people would rush in to divide it.
Wu Genmao, with a grin, casually walked over to the carrying pole, then said: "Uncle Cao you see, why jump to conclusions without asking clear? This is from Ten Miles Team’s wild boar hunt today; hasn’t Shi Jian been working over there, and they shared some with him!"
Cao Manfu peered at the stove where over half of the wild boar meat, sliced into strips to be frozen, remained, his eyes twitching twice.
He clenched his hands hidden behind him, coughed twice and said, "You two rascals better not fool me, what wild boar would give you so much meat?"
Wu Genmao waved his hand nonchalantly: "They caught over ten wild boars! Said the boar herd came down the mountain and all were hunted!"
"What did you say!"
