Chapter 355: Chapter 354: Farewell

The next day, Wang Hong got up early to make dumplings for Sun Yafei, filled with pork lard and cabbage.

Uncle Guan personally harnessed the ox cart and drove it to Wang Hong’s doorstep.

The ox cart seemed to have been cleaned, much tidier than usual.

Li Dahe silently loaded the two big bags of luggage onto the ox cart, squinting at Sun Yafei. After a long silence, he said, "Work hard when you get there, and call if anything comes up."

He was like an old father sending off a child on a long journey, with a thousand words in his heart, yet only a dry phrase made it to his lips.

Wang Hong wrapped her arm around Sun Yafei’s shoulder, her other hand resting on Yafei’s shoulder bag, instructing, "The food and the letter of introduction are in the bag, make sure to check them carefully. I’ve tucked two eggs in your shoulder bag, the rest are in the luggage wrap. Don’t sleep on the journey, don’t flaunt your wealth, watch your belongings, be careful out there, and don’t trust anyone once you leave."

Sun Yafei felt very heavy-hearted, her lips pressed together as she gently nodded.

She struggled to hold back her tears, not wanting to be immersed in them during the final farewell.

"It’s time to get on the cart, or else you’ll miss the train," Uncle Guan said in a muffled voice, sitting on the ox cart.

"Yeah, right, let’s go." Wang Hong sniffled and let go of her hand.

"Wait a minute, wait a minute!"

Uncle Guan hadn’t yet cracked his whip when Principal Wu’s voice came from afar.

Principal Wu hurried over, carrying a brand-new water bottle.

Sun Yafei had just settled in when she saw Principal Wu and wanted to get off, but Wu pressed her down.

Principal Wu shoved the water bottle into Sun Yafei’s arms and said with a smile, a twinkle in his eyes, "I boiled some mung bean soup early this morning for you to drink on the road."

The tears that Sun Yafei had been holding back all morning suddenly fell.

’The capitalist’s daughter also needs to drink mung bean soup, huh.’

That was what he had said to her with a smiling face, handing her a bowl of mung bean soup on her first day at Ten Miles Team.

"Don’t cry, child, go now, and come back to visit when you can."

Principal Wu wiped the tears from her face, smiling and waving at her.

"Principal, Aunt Wang, the Team Leader..."

Sun Yafei hugged the water bottle, looking at the people in front of her, unable to speak through her tears.

Uncle Guan looked back, sighed, and then cracked the whip, carrying her away.

The ox cart trundled along, one household after another opening their doors, as familiar faces appeared at their thresholds.

They waved to her, giving her advice to call if anything came up, to get along well with her comrades in the battalion, to come back and visit if possible... and that she would not have to labor when she returned.

The villagers followed the ox cart, wanting to accompany her a little further.

When the ox cart turned past the large tree at the village entrance, the villagers stopped in their tracks.

Sun Yafei, her voice trembling, said, "Uncle Guan, please stop for a moment, just for a moment..."

Uncle Guan sighed again and stopped the cart.

Sun Yafei didn’t wait for the cart to come to a complete stop before she leaped down. Looking at the people who had tried to bring warmth into her life, her knees gave in and she knelt down.

She bent forward, touching her forehead to the ground.

She didn’t know how to repay them, but she knew, she truly, truly didn’t want to leave this place.

Even though she had only been here less than a month, she had come to truly think of it as home.

She knelt for a long time, her tears hitting the dust, sobbing too much to stand up.

In the end, it was Uncle Guan who pulled her up from the ground.

He said, "Alright, my girl, let’s go. Any more delay and we’ll really miss the ride... From now on, you can come back whenever you want. It’s not like we’ll never see each other again."

Sun Yafei was dragged and pulled onto the ox cart by Uncle Guan.

As the ox cart pulled away, gradually, she could no longer see the faces of the villagers.

But she knew that these people, these events, these memories, she would never forget in her lifetime.

From now on, she would have two homes.

It was already night by the time Sun Yafei arrived at the battalion.

The ones who came to pick her up at the station were the Ninth Company’s company commander and the female soldiers’ platoon leader.

They were very kind to her. The platoon leader told her that a bed had been reserved for her in the dormitory, and they had even made noodles for her.

This made Sun Yafei feel a bit more at ease.

Sun Yafei was assigned to the Ninth Company. It was nearly an hour’s ride from the station to the Ninth Company, and the road was long.

On the way, the platoon leader told her many things to be aware of in the Great Northern Wilderness. These included but were not limited to not running around carelessly, especially at night, as one might step into a bottomless water hole; one must not be separated from a sickle, not just for work, but also for self-defense...

Sun Yafei tried hard to remember. After the platoon leader finished speaking, she asked, "Platoon leader, do you know a comrade named Guan Manling?"

The platoon leader was taken aback, then smiled.

She looked towards the company commander of the Ninth Company and said to Sun Yafei with a smile, "For that, you need to ask the company commander, he’s more familiar!"

"Cough cough, let’s not talk about that," the company commander’s dark face turned red, and he felt somewhat uneasy as he touched his nose and turned to look out the window.

Sun Yafei was clueless, her face filled with confusion.

The platoon leader said to her with a smile, "Manling shares a dormitory with you; she is the class leader of the second female class. You will see her soon."

"Really? That’s great."

Sun Yafei felt this was the only good news she had received today.

Upon arriving at the Ninth Company, the company commander helped carry Sun Yafei’s luggage to the entrance of the women’s dormitory, then quickly left as if eager to avoid being teased by the platoon leader again.

As soon as the girls in the dormitory heard some noise, they swarmed out, clapping and welcoming with laughter.

Sun Yafei did not expect to find over ten people living in such a dormitory and immediately became shy, "He-hello everyone, my name is Sun Yafei..."

"Hello, Sun Yafei." Guan Manling stepped forward, shook her hand with a smile, "I’m Guan Manling, the class leader of the second female class. You can come to me with any issues in the future."

Sun Yafei looked at Guan Manling’s handsome and beautiful face, nodding repeatedly.

"Come on, we’ve just made noodles for you. Eat some as soon as you enter," Guan Manling said, pulling Sun Yafei inside.

Sun Yafei was surrounded by the girls as she ate a bowl of noodles. Then, pulling Guan Manling aside, she whispered, "Class leader, do you know Lin Nianhe?"

Guan Manling was startled, then nodded, "I know her, what about it?"

"She asked me to bring you a letter." Sun Yafei hurriedly took out the neatly folded letter from her bag and handed it to Guan Manling.

Guan Manling, holding the letter, didn’t open it right away but asked first, "Did you come from the Ten Miles Team?"

"Yes." Sun Yafei obediently nodded.

"That..." Guan Manling furrowed her brows, hesitated for a moment, then still asked, "How is Sie Yufei doing recently?"

"He..." Sun Yafei thought about the recent incidents, searched for the right words for a long while, but in the end, could only steel herself to reply, "He’s still alive."

Guan Manling: "..."

She immediately tore open the envelope and quickly read the letter.

Lin Nianhe’s letter was not long. It first informed Guan Manling about Sie Yufei’s recent situation: He had caused trouble, acted out, even got drunk, but in the end, he survived.

Guan Manling breathed a sigh of relief after reading this part, wiped off the cold sweat from her forehead, and continued to read the letter.
