Transmigration: Flirted with My Childhood Sweetheart
Chapter 229 - 228: School Starts

Chapter 229: Chapter 228: School Starts

Digging a cellar won’t be accomplished in a day or two, and neither will Big Brother just drop dead.

Wu Genmao still reported the digging of the cellar to Bai Bo, and it was overheard by Zhou Xu squatting behind the counter.

As someone on surveillance duty, Zhou Xu made an excuse to deliver a message to Ten Miles Team that very night.

"Sister Lin, why are you having them dig a vegetable cellar?" Zhou Xu was quite puzzled.

Lin Nianhe casually handed him two freshly picked cucumbers, replying, "Oh, it’s just to let Bai Bo know I’m getting ready to receive goods. Otherwise, how would he believe I actually have something?"

The reason made sense.

Zhou Xu breathed a sigh of relief and asked her, "So, you’re not going to tell Brother Cheng about this?"

"Congratulations, you’ve learned to interrupt," Lin Nianhe said with a smile, "Don’t worry, Eldest Brother Zhou, once the cellar is ready, Bai Bo will get even more restless. It won’t be long now."

"Okay." Zhou Xu took a bite of cucumber and cautioned her, "Then don’t forget to tell me in advance. By then, you’ll have to inform Brother Cheng."

"I know." Lin Nianhe gave him a reassuring look and handed over a cloth bag, "These vegetables were just picked from the field; take them back to eat."

"Eh?" Zhou Xu reacted, repeatedly shaking his head, "That won’t do; that really won’t do."

"It’s just some vegetables. I’ve got plenty, and it’ll just go bad if not eaten," Lin Nianhe said. "Besides, they’re not all for you. Help me take some to Eldest Sister-in-law Zhou; if it weren’t for her and Eldest Brother Zhou last time, I might have lost my life."

With Zhou Chen and Eldest Sister-in-law Zhou as a shield, Zhou Xu couldn’t refuse.

He opened the cloth bag to check and, seeing it was just vegetables, he accepted it with peace of mind.

"Alright, I’ll thank you on behalf of my eldest brother and sister-in-law." Zhou Xu smiled, hanging the cloth bag on his bicycle handle, and added, "Oh right, my sister also asked me to pass on a message to you: she said she’s heading to the provincial city tomorrow and will treat you to a meal when she comes back."

"Okay, I’ll wait for her."

Lin Nianhe waved to him, her lips curled in a smile as she watched him leave.

Lin Nianhe took a bite of cucumber, the sweet flavor filling her mouth.

"Ah, I really am a little genius; even the vegetables I grow taste so good."

She murmured quietly, "I definitely deserve a late-night snack as a reward for myself."

While Lin Nianhe was hiding in her cabin munching on crabs, Bai Bo in the provincial city had called all of his other trusted followers except for Laosan.

Laosan was still hustling outside, acting as the money scatterer in various communes and not currently in the provincial city.

Bai Bo lit a cigarette and said, "Preparations for receiving goods by digging a cellar are already underway on the Lan County side."

A big, dark-faced man on his right, quite the simpleton, suggested, "Then why don’t we just go and rob her as soon as she’s got the goods?"

Bai Bo threw his cigarette pack at him, laughing and scolding, "Laoer, you’ve got all brawn and no brains. Why bother robbing her for nothing?"

Laoer caught the cigarette pack, took out a cigarette for himself, and passed the pack to someone else.

He argued, "Why keep her around if not to rob her? What can a little girl do anyway?"

"After robbing her once, there will be no more," Bai Bo said, "As long as she has goods, I’d really treat her like my own sister, so what?"

Laoer pursed his lips and didn’t speak any further.

He still thought a direct robbery was best.

Laosi, lighting his cigarette, spoke up, "Boss, but it has been over a month without any move from that girl. Does she really have goods?"

"I asked. Wu Genmao said they’ll have the vegetable cellar ready in four or five days, then we can have them go down and take a look," Bai Bo said, smiling with his teeth bared, a sinister gleam flashing in his eyes.

"What if she doesn’t want to give it to us? The black market in Lan County isn’t under our control now, and she can distribute it herself," Laosi reminded with a frown, "Boss, she’s not one of us."

"I know," Bai Bo nodded, then directed his gaze to Laoer, "So, Laoer, lately you pick out the capable ones and start training them. If she really dares to play us, then she can’t blame us for not being polite!"

Laoer sprang to his feet abruptly, knocking the stool to the ground.

"Don’t worry, big brother! This is my forte!"

Laoer clenched his fists and knocked them against each other, the thudding sound of flesh striking flesh sent shivers down one’s spine, yet he himself bore an eager look, seemingly looking forward to the chance to fight for Lin Nianhe.

Bai Bo looked at him, a smile curling at the corners of his mouth.

...

Bai Bo’s arrangements were unknown to Lin Nianhe, as she was preoccupied with more important matters.

To be exact, all the teachers at the village school were busy with something urgent -

School was starting.

On the morning of the opening day, at 4:30, Principal Wu arrived at the Educated Youth Corps site, full of vim and vigor, and clapped his hands to boost morale: "Comrades, teachers! Wake up, straighten yourselves out, today is the first day of class for our school, we must be spirited!"

Under the west wall, Mu Tou’s six brothers and Zhou Chujiang were brushing their teeth facing the wall;

In the east room, the female comrades were already up;

In the backyard...

"Were you three being thieves last night? Why are you still lying in your lazy beds? Get up quickly, what kind of impression will you make on the students?"

Wen Lan was no thief, but she had been pedaling her sewing machine until eleven o’clock last night.

Wang Shumei was also no thief, but she had been doing accounts until twelve o’clock last night.

Lin Nianhe certainly wasn’t a thief, but she had eaten too much for supper and felt bloated, tossing and turning until after one o’clock before she managed to fall asleep.

Wen Lan and Wang Shumei got up one after the other, yawning as they replied, "Don’t worry, Principal, we’re getting up."

Principal Wu nodded satisfactorily and turned around, only to see the door to Lin Nianhe’s room still tightly closed.

With no choice, he knocked: "Nianhe, Nianhe? Time to get up."

Lin Nianhe wrapped herself tightly in her small quilt, not wanting to make a sound.

"If you don’t come out, I’m coming in!"

Lin Nianhe’s eyes snapped open and she quickly responded, "I’m up, I’m up, I’m getting up!"

She scrambled off the kang bed and hurriedly collected the animal snare that had been set behind the door.

Looking at the door bolt standing guard, she breathed a long sigh of relief.

Luckily she had reacted quickly, and saved Principal Wu’s life.

She sniffed, thoroughly scared now, she was completely awake.

After changing into her clothes and braiding her hair, Lin Nianhe began to feel a bit more alert as she ate a sandwich with her coffee.

Class started at seven, and Principal Wu had already gone to the village entrance by six-thirty.

Groups of children, two by two, walking together against the morning light, carrying backpacks of various colors - these were painstakingly pieced together by their principal from scraps of cloth.

Principal Wu watched them, a smile touched his lips, a smile of immense satisfaction.

There weren’t many students at the village school, as the children from Victory Team never came to study; they only had children from two teams, ninety-eight students in total.

On the playground, students stood in lines according to their classes, the little children standing stiffly, quiet and well-behaved.

Principal Wu looked at the children crowded on the playground, a smile on his face, and a gleam in his eye.

The weather was excellent today, a clear blue sky without a cloud in sight, warm sunshine casting down on the children’s faces, illuminating every cheek.
