Chapter 210: Chapter 209: The Food Summoning Spell
Lin Nianhe walked back to the Ten Miles Team and on the way, she ran into He Jianjun, who was taking children back to the Nine-miles Team.
Children sitting in the ox cart were waving at her happily or shyly.
While He Jianjun was heading back to the Ten Miles Team to pick up another group of children, Lin Nianhe managed to hitch a ride for part of the journey.
Back at school, when Wang Shumei saw her returning alone, she immediately understood: "Xiao Lan took Cailan’s mother to the health clinic?"
"Mhm." Lin Nianhe nodded, then with a light sigh, looked at the few remaining children on the playground and turned to ask, "How’s Principal Wu?"
"Much better, Niuwa looked after her and let her sleep for a while; she woke up just a few minutes ago." Wang Shumei asked her, "Did you sort out the marriage issue?"
"As expected, nothing gets past my Sister Shumei." Lin Nianhe was somewhat exhausted and rested her head on Wang Shumei’s shoulder, recounting the previous events in a hushed tone, arm in arm with her.
Wang Shumei couldn’t help but laugh and cry as she listened, then gave Lin Nianhe a sideways glance and said, "I thought with you there, Xiao Lan wouldn’t go too far, but look now, you hit even harder than she did."
"I was furious."
Saying that, Lin Nianhe entered Principal Wu’s cabin.
Principal Wu was drinking water with Niuwa’s help, her eyes beaming with a smile.
Upon seeing Lin Nianhe return, she immediately asked, "How’s everything with Cailan?"
"It’s all taken care of, the bride price of twenty yuan was returned," Lin Nianhe left out all the details likely to earn her a beating and succinctly explained, "Wen Lan sent Cailan’s mother to the health clinic, and Cailan went along with them."
"That’s good, that’s good." Principal Wu patted her chest in relief and asked, "She’ll come back to school, right?"
"She will, I’ve spoken to her." Lin Nianhe tucked in her blanket corners for her, saying, "Tonight Shumei and I will cook, Wu Genmao brought back two fish this afternoon; let’s cook them for dinner."
"Then call over all the educated youth, you guys haven’t had it easy helping out these days," Principal Wu sat up, "As well as Xiao Zhang and Xiao Zhou, prepare something to send over to Hongzi’s family... I should take care of these old tasks."
"Just lie down," Lin Nianhe pressed her back down, "Niuwa, you keep an eye on Principal Wu, don’t let her move."
"Okay!" Niuwa stood like a little soldier beside Principal Wu’s bed.
"Am I really that helpless?" Principal Wu looked at Lin Nianhe with a mix of laughing and crying, "Nianhe, I’m really fine."
"Then take a rest; it’s been tiring just to watch the busy afternoon," Lin Nianhe said and then stood up, pulling Wang Shumei to go cook.
"Boiling fish for dinner? I still have glass noodles at home, I’ll go get them."
"Great, do you have tofu? Tofu and carp stew is the best."
"Sure, I’ll ask on the way..."
"Then I’ll start with the fish!"
Lin Nianhe rubbed her hands and stepped into the kitchen, then suddenly, she nearly let out a shrill scream at the silhouette by the stove.
"Little Fourth Sie! What are you doing?"
Lin Nianhe glared at Sie Yufei, asking through gritted teeth, "It’s this late and you’re still not leaving?"
Sie Yufei looked quite wronged, "Miss Lin, today I caught four fish for you guys; is it wrong to stay for a meal?"
Seeing that it was for the sake of the fish, Lin Nianhe nodded in agreement.
"Then the fish gutting is up to you." Lin Nianhe assigned the task directly.
"Sure!"
Sie Yufei didn’t mind hard work, as long as there was food involved.
He didn’t seem to consider that if he took all four fish home, he could have enjoyed them all by himself.
In no time, Wang Shumei arrived with glass noodles and tofu, along with a small bag of cornmeal and the educated youth who had just finished work.
Lin Nianhe peeked out and saw Wen Qingqing and Wen Ruannuan with despairing faces; as soon as they reached the school, they sat on the benches and didn’t move an inch.
With more hands to help, cooking was quick. Soon the fish was stewed, and cornmeal pancakes stuck around the side of the pot. A bowl of river shrimp stir-fried with chili smelled tantalizing.
Everyone was happy, except Zhou Chujiang.
Zhou Chujiang’s discontent was entirely because of Sie Yufei, who was lingering around Lin Nianhe.
And his discontent was entirely ignored by everyone else.
"Elder... Teacher Lin! I’ve completed the task!"
Wu Genmao came back exactly one second after the dishes were taken off the stove.
Lin Nianhe muttered to herself: "Is this some sort of meal summoning spell?"
He’s come back way too timely!
Wu Genmao spotted a table set in the courtyard, found an empty stool without any hesitation, and plopped down, still gripping onto Zhang Dahu.
Lin Nianhe wanted to say something to Zhang Dahu, but she noticed the kid looking at her in an exceedingly weird way.
It felt like he wanted to acknowledge a new boss.
Lin Nianhe frowned and gave Wu Genmao a sideways glance.
Right at that moment, Niuwa came out supporting Principal Wu.
Principal Wu noticed Wu Genmao dragging a kid along and his eyes lit up: "Is that Zhang Dahu?"
"Yep." Wu Genmao nodded, "Principal, I brought him back!"
"Good, as long as he’s back," Principal Wu nodded, "Let’s eat first, you’ve been running around all afternoon, you must be starving?"
Zhang Dahu eyed the food on the table, his mouth watering.
He was not just hungry, but greedy for the food.
Everyone started grabbing chopsticks and fetching stools, with Niuwa taking Zhang Dahu by the hand, the two kids went to wash their hands by the water tank.
Lin Nianhe turned around and saw the Wen family’s sisters still leaning against the wall, dozing off on the long bench. She walked over curiously and saw that, indeed, they had fallen asleep just like that.
"Wake up, it’s time to eat." Lin Nianhe patted them awake.
Wen Qingqing and Wen Ruannuan opened their sleepy eyes. Upon seeing Lin Nianhe, both pairs of eyes immediately turned red.
"Nianhe..."
"I’m dying..."
"There’s stewed fish and fried shrimp for dinner, are you sure you want to die now?"
Wen Qingqing: "Then... let’s eat first."
Wen Ruannuan: "Actually, I don’t really feel like dying."
If every day they could have such meals, they would no longer fear hard work!
Yesterday the sisters were too squeamish to eat, but today they shoveled food like pigs let out of the pen, barely lifting their heads.
Only after filling their bellies did they notice—
"Sie Yufei? What are you doing here?"
Youngest Master Sie glanced at them, curled his lip: "I’ve been here since this morning, ah. The fish you’re eating, I caught them."
Wen Ruannuan held her belly, still puzzled: "Aren’t you supposed to be working?"
Sie Yufei’s eyes brimmed with pride: "Jealous?"
It’s more than just jealousy, Wen Ruannuan really wanted to strangle him.
Principal Wu watched them, her smile filled with satisfaction.
She didn’t say anything, as if this was just an ordinary meal.
But her eyes were rimmed red, gazing at them, as if she could see a bright future.
After dinner, the educated youth started to clear the dishes. Principal Wu was about to call over Zhang Dahu, but Lin Nianhe shook her head at her, and then dragged Zhang Dahu into the first grade classroom herself.
Principal Wu watched their backs, thought for a moment, and did not call out to stop Lin Nianhe.
Lin Nianhe closed the classroom door, turned on the light, and asked Zhang Dahu: "I hear you want to do business?"
Zhang Dahu, satisfied with his meal, with his little face all greasy, looked up at Lin Nianhe and nodded vigorously: "Yes! I want to make big money!"
Lin Nianhe: "Did you make any money today?"
"None!"
"Why not?"
"Because I couldn’t find the black market!"
