Transmigration: Flirted with My Childhood Sweetheart -
Chapter 165 - 164: The Adventures of the Two Tailing Duo
Chapter 165: Chapter 164: The Adventures of the Two Tailing Duo
On the return journey, only Su Yuncheng and Lin Nianhe were in the sleeping carriage, which was even emptier than on the trip coming here.
This made it easier for them to talk.
"Are you going to come back to the provincial city again?" Lin Nianhe lay on her bunk, looking at Su Yuncheng as she asked.
"I have to." Su Yuncheng nodded, "I need to keep an eye on Bai Bo and collect evidence."
What they wanted was Bai Bo alive. If killing him could resolve the chaos in the provincial city, someone would have acted already.
Su Yuncheng’s task was to clarify Bai Bo’s network of relations and wipe out all those bloodsuckers in one fell swoop.
Lin Nianhe nodded gently, conscientiously saying, "I’ll stay in the Team, won’t run around. If anything comes up, I’ll definitely tell you."
"Mm." Su Yuncheng leaned in and ruffled her hair.
He was silent for a moment, then said, "Don’t worry about the matter of family leave, I’ll come up with a solution for you."
Lin Nianhe was stunned.
She had mentioned this casually during their trip, not expecting he would actually remember it.
She smiled with pursed lips: "Alright, I’ll wait for you, I’m not in a hurry."
"Mm."
After a brief silence, Lin Nianhe steered the conversation back to the matter of Bai Bo.
She said, "With Uncle Niu around, I figure Bai Bo wouldn’t dare do anything to me. If possible, I will try to lure him to Lan County. Capturing him in the provincial city is still too risky for you."
"Nianhe." Su Yuncheng frowned, "Haven’t we talked about this already? It’s not an option."
This was a point on which the two of them had long argued and still had not reached an agreement.
Lin Nianhe thought she could handle it; Su Yuncheng thought it was too dangerous.
Since they had already discussed it many times and each had exhausted their arguments and analyses, this time, Lin Nianhe simply closed her eyes, pretending to sleep, refusing to communicate.
Su Yuncheng felt helpless.
All he could do was cover her with his coat.
Pretending to sleep, Lin Nianhe eventually drifted off for real.
In a daze, she even had a dream where Su Yuncheng was caught by the enemy and subjected to all kinds of inhumane treatment...
It was the unfinished story he had told, elaborated by her imagination.
When she awoke from the nightmare, her forehead was covered in cold sweat.
She sat up in bed, gasping for air deeply.
"Nianhe?"
Su Yuncheng sat beside her and pulled out a handkerchief to wipe off her sweat: "What’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"
Lin Nianhe was dazed for a moment, then instinctively clutched his sleeve, looking into his eyes with a pitiful plea: "Mm, I had a nightmare... Dreamed that you were captured and tortured so badly..."
Su Yuncheng was softened by her gaze; he patted her back soothingly, comforting: "Don’t be scared, it’s just a dream, not real."
Lin Nianhe’s small hand shifted, grabbing his fingers: "Brother Yuncheng, please don’t take risks, okay? I’m begging you."
Her voice was soft and sweet, carrying a sleepy-sweet tone, as gentle as this year’s freshly harvested cotton.
No hero can resist the plea of a beauty; if they can, that beauty is surely not the one closest to their heart.
Su Yuncheng rubbed Lin Nianhe’s head, nodding in agreement: "Mm, I won’t take risks, don’t worry."
Lin Nianhe: "Then it’s agreed, let’s lure him to Lan County!"
Su Yuncheng: "..."
...
When they got off the train, Su Yuncheng carefully looked around and didn’t see the two people who had followed them all the way.
They probably really didn’t keep up.
He didn’t think about it any further, took Lin Nianhe to have a meal, went home to get the bicycle, and then rode with her back to Ten Miles Team.
Both of them had no idea that today, the train conductor had caught two train pickpockets.
When asked to present an introduction letter and their ticket, Wu Genmao covered Cao Shijian’s mouth and stubbornly claimed that thieves had stolen them, and they had to resort to sneaking onto the train to get home.
He also pointed to Cao Shijian’s dyer’s-stained face as evidence of fighting with the thief.
Seeing the two of them looking half dead from exhaustion, the train conductor took pity on them, let them into the train staff’s resting area, and even poured them some hot water.
After a whole day of hustle, they finally met a kind soul; Wu Genmao nearly dragged Cao Shijian to bow three times to the conductor.
Taking care of them was one thing, but reporting was still necessary.
Once off the train, the conductor took them straight to the security office. A Public Security comrade came over, asked which production team they were from, and wanted to make a phone call to verify the situation.
Wu Genmao was nervous, but had no choice but to answer truthfully: "Vic-Victory Team."
The Public Security officer had just picked up the phone but then put it down.
Victory Team didn’t have a phone.
It was clearly unrealistic to send someone to notify, so adhering to a sense of responsibility, the Public Security officer and a colleague escorted them back home.
The moment Cao Manfu saw the two lads, he was bewildered, but quickly recovered, mumbling that it was fine the matter wasn’t settled, as long as they were safe and back home. He patted them, ushering them into the house and then with endless thanks, saw off the Public Security officers.
With the guarantee from the team leader, the Public Security didn’t suspect any further and left.
Cao Manfu, with a full heart of doubts, returned to the house and asked them, "There’s been no word from you two for years; I thought you were dead out there... You’re staying for good this time, right?"
Wu Genmao forced a smile but didn’t respond.
Cao Manfu raised his voice: "You’re leaving again? Got a way to make a living out there?"
Scratching his head, Wu Genmao said, "Haven’t we survived up until now... Uncle Cao, we’ve returned this time with a mission, we’re not down on our luck."
"Not down on your luck and you sneak on the train to get here?" Cao Manfu said mockingly as he looked at their sorry state.
Cao Shijian, after drinking two ladles of water, finally caught his breath and said stubbornly, "We couldn’t get train tickets without an introduction letter."
Cao Manfu: "..."
Indeed, that’s a legitimate reason.
Looking at Cao Shijian, his head began to hurt a little.
Unaware, Cao Shijian wobbled into the house stating, "Uncle Second, can you get us something to eat? We’ve had nothing but water all day."
Cao Manfu glared at him but, considering that he was his nephew whom he had not seen for two years, he reluctantly had his wife cook them two bowls of corn mush.
Cao Shijian, seeing the corn mush which was barely thicker than cold water, was shocked: "How come it’s still so poor?"
Cao Manfu, feeling embarrassed, turned away and grumbled, "Eat it if you will, or get lost if you won’t."
Not eating was out of the question; they had not eaten all day and were starving.
After eating, they still had work to do, continuing their surveillance for Big Brother.
By the time they arrived at Ten Miles Team, the moon was hanging from the treetops, and the village, under the stars, was asleep.
Swallowing hard, Cao Shijian asked, "The sister-in-law should be asleep by now, right? We probably should have come tomorrow."
Wu Genmao gave him a glare, lifted his chin, and said, "Are you dumb? Big Brother always conducts his business at night, so of course we have to come at night too... Your brain isn’t working, just follow my lead."
"Oh, alright then."
As they wandered on the road, Ten Miles Team’s road was much smoother and wider than Victory Team’s, and the overall village hadn’t changed much from two years ago, except for a new house...
Cao Shijian was curious: "Wow, whose house is that? Such a big yard they’ve built."
Wu Genmao pulled him along: "Let’s go ask, maybe they have food, we have money."
"Sure!"
To fill their bellies, they determinedly headed towards the new house.
Inside the courtyard, Zhao Zhuangshi was trying to catch crickets with his two younger brothers.
The frantic footsteps scared away the loudest cricket.
Zhao Zhuangshi was furious.
"Dammit, you bloody useless bunch, when will this ever end?"
