Chapter 139: Chapter 138: Exam

The primary school of Ten Miles Team was completed five days ago, and children had already sneaked in to play several rounds.

It’s just that the scheduled teacher examination was delayed for a few days due to a mess of issues, and seeing that time was running short, Principal Wu declared that even if knives were to fall from the sky, the test must be taken today, otherwise she would not have enough time to hold a meeting and start classes for these new teachers.

Fortunately, no knives fell from the sky today. Otherwise, Principal Wu would have had to confront the terrifying reality of her entire reserve teacher corps being annihilated.

In the brand-new classroom, twelve members of the Educated Youth Corps sat one to a desk, most sitting upright. Outside the window, a lively crowd of villagers and children crammed together to peer in and occasionally whispered conjectures about who might pass the test, based entirely on subjective thoughts, without any theoretical basis.

Principal Wu and two high school teachers from Lan County were responsible for proctoring the exam. She stood behind the lectern, dignified, scanning the students below and even shooting a glare at a drowsy Educated Youth surnamed Lin, who was propping up his head.

"Ahem," Principal Wu cleared her throat, raising her volume, "The exam lasts two hours, with two papers, Language and Mathematics. Hand in your papers when finished, and the two teachers and I will mark them together."

After speaking, Principal Wu nodded to the male teacher beside her, signaling him to distribute the papers.

"I’ll help you," the female teacher volunteered, taking half of the Mathematics papers.

The two of them went their separate ways, distributing both Language and Mathematics papers together.

Almost everyone began eagerly looking at the questions as soon as they received their papers, their faces either frowning or beaming, with all their reactions plainly visible.

Lin Nianhe was an exception.

Having done physical labor last night, she was so sleepy now that she didn’t even want to make an extra facial expression.

This made her seem quite out of place.

The aunts outside the window were getting worried.

"Is Educated Youth Lin not feeling well? Look at her, like a wilted eggplant."

"Shut your trap! Can’t you say something nice? Hmm... With Miss Lin’s level of education, there’s no way she won’t pass."

"Besides, they need six people, right? Even if she doesn’t make it to the first place, getting the sixth spot is fine too!"

"What if she doesn’t even make it to the sixth?"

"Well, well... then we all work together in the fields, which is pretty fun too."

"..."

Principal Wu raised her hand and waved twice out the window, gesturing for them to stop talking.

The onlookers each covered their mouths, not wanting to leave, and shooed away the children gathered around.

"Go on, go play over there and don’t disturb the Educated Youths’ exam!"

The children of Ten Miles Team were tough, they could run swiftly, even with pots on their back.

Bored out of her mind, Lin Nianhe propped up her head with one hand and wrote her name on the exam paper with the other.

The papers appeared to be high school exam papers. As Lin Nianhe yawned and worked on the questions, by the time a Language paper was placed on her desk, she had already finished half of the Mathematics paper.

This caught Zhou Chujiang, the distributor of the papers, by surprise.

He instinctively stopped in his tracks, taking an extra glance at Lin Nianhe’s paper.

The handwriting was beautiful, but too sharp, not typical of a girl’s.

He glanced slightly upward, looking at Lin Nianhe.

Then...

"Hey, aren’t you going to distribute the papers?"

Wen Lan, sitting at the back, looked dissatisfied at the stunned Zhou Chujiang and added, "I like to write the essay first."

Upon hearing Sister Lan mention the essay, Lin Nianhe’s hand trembled, and the sharp nib of her pen almost tore through the paper.

She really wanted to accuse Wen Lan of disturbing the competitors’ mental state.

But Lin Nianhe chose to keep silent.

For the sake of friendship.

She patted her chest to calm herself and continued working on the problems.

Zhou Chujiang also came back to his senses and quickly distributed the remaining two papers, then quietly returned to Principal Wu’s side.

He quietly brought a chair for Principal Wu, who had instructed them to take good care of her due to her health issues when asking them to come.

Principal Wu gave him a nod and a smile in thanks.

She spoke softly, "You and Xiao Zhang find seats too, it’s going to take a while."

"Okay." Zhou Chujiang went to get two empty stools and gave one to Zhang Qiong.

Zhang Qiong’s cheeks were flushed, and when she took the stool, she glanced at Zhou Chujiang.

Zhou Chujiang, however, didn’t notice her gaze; what floated through his mind was the characters he had just seen.

They were really quite beautiful.

He looked around the classroom nonchalantly, his gaze lingering a bit longer on Lin Nianhe’s face.

Lin Nianhe was working on a math paper, and couldn’t help but sigh to herself that if the college entrance exam were this easy, she could definitely get into Peking University.

By the third sigh, she had finished the arithmetic paper.

The Chinese paper was even less difficult: forming words, constructing sentences, annotating the pinyin, and some dictation of quotes.

The essay topic was a little more interesting though.

"Primary Education"

It was clearly a topic set by Principal Wu.

Lin Nianhe finished all the simple questions first, then rested the pen on her forehead to think for a moment before starting to write.

As she wrote, she wickedly wondered how Sister Lan would start an essay with this title...

Lin Nianhe’s essay wasn’t lengthy; there was no evil "minimum of 800 words" here, she wrote around five hundred words, then capped her pen, stood up, and turned in her paper.

There was a collective gasp from the aunts outside the window.

Inside, the Educated Youth remained unphased.

They were already accustomed to Top Scholar Lin’s ability to glance over a problem and produce an answer.

These young hearts had long been so stimulated they were immune to all poisons.

Principal Wu looked at Lin Nianhe, gritting his teeth and muttered, "Did you go off thieving last night?"

"No." Lin Nianhe rubbed her eyes, looking innocent, "Would you believe me if I said I was too nervous about today’s exam and couldn’t sleep?"

Principal Wu, holding her paper, said: "Go outside and help me close the door."

Lin Nianhe: "..."

That meant to scram. She knew.

Top Scholar Lin, hands in pockets, ambled out to help Principal Wu close the door.

As soon as she was outside, the aunts pounced on her.

"Miss Lin, how did you finish so quickly? Don’t tell me you just guessed at everything!" Aunt Li said frowning, whispering, "Go on, flatter Principal Wu a bit, write a little more."

Widow Zhao nodded repeatedly, "Yes, yes, Educated Youth Lin, go back... do well, and this old lady will stew a hen for you."

Lin Nianhe looked bewilderedly at Widow Zhao: "Aunt Zhao, what brings you here too?"

Most aunts who came to spectate had children who were going to school; what about Widow Zhao?

Widow Zhao chuckled and peeked at Zhang Qiong, who was sitting next to Principal Wu, whispering, "Well, I just... wanted to see what the teachers from town look like, just looking, just looking."

Lin Nianhe: "..."

So after Zhuangshi failed in match-making, Widow Zhao had set her sights on unfamiliar girls from town.

With a helpless shake of her head, she said: "Aunt Zhao, forget the old hen, keep it, and use it to nourish your future daughter-in-law instead."

At the mention of "daughter-in-law", Widow Zhao beamed, grabbing Lin Nianhe’s other hand and patting the back of her hand, boasting to everyone around: "Look, look, Educated Youth Lin sure knows how to talk!"

Her smug look, as if the mere mention of a daughter-in-law by Lin Nianhe could make it a reality.

Lin Nianhe’s mouth twitched slightly, as she tried to pull her hand back with effort.

Good lord, she almost scattered the drowsiness out of her with those pats.

Widow Zhao’s pride only earned her a few eye rolls, while the others were still concerned about Lin Nianhe’s exam.

Top Scholar Lin wanted to keep a low profile, but the aunts were too enthusiastic; she could only be as low-key as possible: "Don’t worry, aunts, I finished all the questions, they weren’t hard... I haven’t had breakfast, I’m going back now."

After saying that, she quickly slipped away.

She was missing her little kang bed too much.

However, as soon as Lin Nianhe walked past the eastern wall of the Educated Youth Corps, she was dumbfounded.

Before her eyes were the vegetable patch, the hut, and the lush woods.

"Where’s my wall?"

"Where’s that big wall of mine!"
