Chapter 700: Chapter 341: Married Off_3
Following that, the Grand Empress Dowager’s presents were given, consisting of four sets of jewelry and eight bolts of palace silk. Next, there were the Empress Dowager’s gifts, two jade Ruyis and four bolts of Makeup flower satin.
Duke Liang personally saw to the reward for several eunuchs.
Qian Yixiu then went to pay her respects by curtsying to the elders. Afterward, the ladies and Liang Jinzhao, along with Qian Yixiu, returned to the inner courtyard. However, while the other female relatives went to the flower hall to dine, Qian Yixiu and Liang Jinzhao went back to Lianxiang Courtyard.
In the hurry just now, Yixiu had broken out in a sweat, so she took out a handkerchief to wipe her forehead.
Liang Jinzhao slowed his pace, whispering, "No need to rush, take your time." He escorted Qian Yixiu back to the courtyard before heading to the front courtyard to join the guests for a drink.
By this time, it was already late afternoon, and the female guests had all gone to dine. There were no outsiders in the bridal chamber, only Blue Bead and another maid whom she did not recognize.
The unfamiliar maid came forward to kneel and pay her respects, "This servant Cai Yun pays respects to the grand young madam."
Qian Yixiu nodded and said, "Hmm, rise."
Blue Bead gave a purse to Cai Yun as a reward.
Qian Yixiu asked Blue Bead, "Have Sister Zeng and Monkey Brother and Sister been settled in nicely?"
Blue Bead replied, "Everything has been arranged. They are staying in the covered rooms in the back courtyard. Monkey Brother and Sister’s room is in the front courtyard’s west wing, but fearing they may cause trouble, they’ve been temporarily coaxed to play in the back courtyard."
Lianxiang Courtyard was a residence with three sections. Liang Jinzhao and Qian Yixiu lived in the main room of the front courtyard, with the servants staying in the back courtyard.
At this moment, a maid came in carrying a food box. She placed the food box on the table and then knelt down to pay respects to Qian Yixiu, "This servant Cai Yue pays respects to the grand young madam."
Qian Yixiu asked her to rise, and Blue Bead gave her a purse as well.
After expressing her thanks, Cai Yue took four dishes and a soup, along with a small bowl of rice, out of the food box. She smiled and said, "The grand young madam must be starving; please make do with these for now."
Yixiu was indeed famished, having eaten only two small pastries early in the morning and having walked so far just a while ago. She first drank half a bowl of black-bone chicken soup and then finished the entire bowl of rice.
After the meal, she freshened up her makeup in front of the mirror and sat cross-legged on the bed.
There weren’t many arrivals in the afternoon; ome guests came in sporadic groups.
As the day gradually turned to dusk, Cai Yue came back and said, "The guests have all left one after the other. The grand young madam can change now." She added, "The Princely Heir sent a servant to pass on a message, saying that he has to continue drinking with a few friends and will only come back later."
Finally, the ordeal was over, and the phoenix crown had pressed on Qian Yixiu’s neck until she could no longer feel it.
With the help of several maids, the phoenix crown was removed, and the ceremonial dress was taken off. Qian Yixiu then went to the bathing chamber for a bath. The bathing chamber was also behind the bedroom, separated by a small door. On the other side of the bathing chamber, there was another door used by old maids to bring in water and empty it out.
After the bath, she dressed in a vermilion satin robe embroidered with golden lotuses and only put a pearl hairpin in her hair. Although it was only the beginning of February, the room was as warm as spring because of the underfloor heating and charcoal basins.
A few pairs of grand wedding candles were lit, brightening the room. The furniture was all made of Purple Sandalwood Wood, intricately carved, inlaid with jade, and gilded. All these pieces were made by the Qian family. In the backdrop of red silk and red flowers, the room looked even more sumptuously festive.
Qian Yixiu looked around her new home, where, barring any surprises, she would spend the next several decades. Ma Mian seemed to have said that in this life, she had an allotted lifespan of eighty-eight years; having lived in the Qian family’s residence for not quite ten years, she would now spend a good seventy more years here. Thankfully, her companion for these years would be Uncle Liang; if it were some man she did not know, she would have found the duration excruciatingly long.
Looking at the extravagantly luxurious and intricately carved bed with inlaid jade, Qian Yixiu’s old face blushed.
She went to the East Room and sat on the heated brick bed under the north window, playing with a small pink-glazed porcelain cup on the bedside table to ease her nervousness.
Around Xu Hour, accompanied by a noise from outside, Liang Jinzhao returned.
Qian Yixiu’s heart embarrassingly started pounding; she took several deep breaths and hurriedly stepped down from the heated brick bed just as Liang Jinzhao walked briskly in. His face was slightly flushed, and his eyes carried a hint of tipsiness.
Qian Yixiu curtsied and called out, "Big Uncle."
Liang Jinzhao, with a beaming face, reached out to take hold of her hand and said, "Yixiu, you must’ve been anxious waiting, right? Those fellows kept drinking until now; it wasn’t easy to send them off."
This man was truly drunk.
Qian Yixiu murmured, "Not anxious."
Liang Jinzhao laughed and said, "You might not be anxious, but you made me wait so long." He added, "I need to bathe." Saying so, he led her into the bedroom.
Cai Yun and Cai Yue followed, helping to remove Liang Jinzhao’s cap and his outer garments. He sat down and took off his black boots, exchanging them for wooden clogs.
Qian Yixiu stood there, watching, completely unable to lend a hand.
Eventually, Cai Yun found a change of underclothes in the wardrobe. Liang Jinzhao took the underclothes and went into the bathing chamber by himself, with the maids not following after him.
It seemed that the fellow was fairly independent—he took care of his own bathing rather than having maids attend to him.
A short while later, Liang Jinzhao emerged with his hair dripping wet. Cai Yun and Cai Yue wanted to step forward with a dry towel to help dry his hair, but Liang Jinzhao waved them away, "You two can go out. Let the young madam do it."
