Chapter 650: Chapter 322 Thrilling_2
Monkey Brother, Lightning, and Yin Feng were also ready, each with a backpack on their back. White Wolf, Dashan, and Tiaotiao were there too, with Dashan crying particularly hard, his sobbing sounds audible.
Qian Yixiu squatted down again to assure him that she would return safely, and she would also bring back Monkey Brother, Lightning, and Yin Feng unharmed.
At the beginning of the Mao Hour, Qian Yixiu led the House of Animals out of the Lianxiang Water Pavilion, with Liang Zhaojin and others waiting outside.
The Old Monk, the Little Monk, Lady Wu, and others escorted them to the outer courtyard. Three people, a monkey, and two dogs said farewell to everyone and set off toward Xishi Mountain.
The stars in the sky were still twinkling, illuminating the path ahead for them.
Monkey Brother walked in the front, followed by Qian Yixiu and Liang Jinzhao side by side, with Wu Ming next, and Lightning and Yin Feng bringing up the rear.
Upon entering Xishi Mountain, it felt much colder than outside the mountain. The further in they went, the stronger the wind blew, howling like a fierce lion next to their ears. The path became increasingly difficult, and with poor visibility, a misstep could send someone tumbling down the mountain. Whenever they encountered treacherous paths, Monkey Brother would turn back and call out twice to remind them to be careful. At those times, Liang Jinzhao would grab Qian Yixiu’s hand and help her walk.
At the same time, Liang Jinzhao also acted as a windbreak. If the wind came from the left, he would quickly move to Qian Yixiu’s left; if it came from the right, he would stand on her right. Although it wasn’t much, it provided some protection from the wind.
Qian Yixiu’s pace was somewhat slow, but as she was still able to walk, she didn’t want to be carried by Monkey Brother. Walking generated heat and kept her from feeling too cold.
Daylight gradually brightened, and with the mountain path in clear view, their speed quickened.
After about half an hour at this pace, Qian Yixiu couldn’t keep up, and her speed noticeably slowed.
Wu Ming said anxiously, "At this rate, we definitely won’t get there before dark."
Qian Yixiu had no choice but to ride on Monkey Brother’s back. Fortunately, Monkey Brother’s body was warm, preventing Qian Yixiu from becoming bitterly cold. The backpack that Monkey Brother had been carrying was now hung on Wu Ming’s chest.
After crossing the outermost high mountain, they faced a series of peak-sharp mountains ahead, towering into the clouds, their summits eternally covered with snow.
Walking a little further, they would have to go through a cave. Beyond the cave, it would be even colder, the mountain paths more rugged and uneven, with more accumulated snow on the way.
Qian Yixiu asked Monkey Brother to set her down, and they lit a fire in a sheltered spot. The few pieces of wood and charcoal for the fire had been brought from home.
They boiled hot water, soaked their cakes in it for a meal, and then set out again.
Turning left, they arrived at the third cave mouth and lit torches. Monkey Brother signaled either Liang Jinzhao or Wu Ming to carry Qian Yixiu, as it needed to focus entirely on the situation inside the cave. Qian Yixiu, no longer the small child with short legs that Doggy could carry, refused.
Wu Ming blushed and shook his head; as a monk, he couldn’t be close to women.
Liang Jinzhao came forward with elation, announcing, "I’ll carry her."
Qian Yixiu shook her head, whispering softly, "I’ll walk on my own."
As soon as she entered the cave with her torch in hand, she was so scared her hair nearly stood on end. The walls of the cave were densely packed with countless bats. Thankfully, they were hibernating; if they were to awaken, it wouldn’t be easy for the group to get through.
When she had been a ghost, there had been nothing in this cave. The changes over a decade had been tremendous.
She turned back, indicating that she was willing to ride on Liang Jinzhao’s back.
They entered the cave, and to be safe, only Qian Yixiu held a torch, ready for combat with the others empty-handed. The sight of innumerable bats on the cave walls startled even Liang Jinzhao and Wu Ming, and they made their way out at the fastest pace they could manage without running, fearing the noise might disturb the bats.
Liang Jinzhao and Wu Ming, both tall with long legs, were able to exit the cave in less than a quarter of an hour, a journey that would have taken Qian Yixiu twice as long. When they emerged from the cave and saw the sunlight again, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Qian Yixiu said, "Put me down."
Liang Jinzhao pinched her leg hard and said, "Don’t be stubborn, look at the ground."
There was a thick layer of snow covering the ground, dazzling under the sunlight’s reflection. Qian Yixiu was aware that beneath the thick snow, there were stones, ground, and gaps between the stones. A careless step into a crevice could easily sprain an ankle or even tumble down the mountain.
Monkey Brother led the way, with a stick in its hand constantly probing ahead. It smartly motioned to Liang Jinzhao, Wu Ming, Lightning, and Yin Feng to follow in its footsteps.
