Chapter 635: Chapter 316 Recovery_3

Qian Ergui, with a flushed face, explained to those in the courtyard, "That woman is spouting nonsense; I went to her courtyard only to bring her money."

Lady Zhu quickly stood up and said, "What my husband said is true. Every time he went to deliver money, he told me about it."

Although this little episode was past, it continued to circulate around Huaxi Village and Darong Village for a long time. Some people didn’t believe that Qian Ergui had gone to sleep with Lady Tang, thinking that she, old and lame, was far inferior to the younger Lady Zhu. Others believed that Qian Ergui had indeed gone to sleep with her, arguing that no matter how ugly or old she was, Qian Ergui had been doing so for so many years, and as long as she was willing, it was a shame not to take advantage.

Qian Ergui was so embarrassed that he didn’t dare to go out for a long time and was too ashamed to show his face even at the invitation to the banquet of running water by the third branch of his family.

The third branch hosted a two-day banquet of running water, inviting everyone from Darong Village and even the Red Cloud Troupe from the county town to perform operas.

That day, Li Shuanzi’s brother and sister-in-law also came, saying that Li Shuanzi had brought so many gifts to Qian Mandua’s maternal home, it was impossible that he forgot to bring any for his in-laws. Could it be that Master Qian had forgotten?

Hua Qiang, leading the Qian family’s servants, stopped them and yelled, "You know better than anyone else the despicable things your family has done. And now you expect Li Shuanzi to bring you gifts? You must be dreaming. If you dare to make trouble here again, don’t blame me for being rude and beating you so bad you won’t be able to get out of bed for half a year."

The people from the Li family, scared by the imposing Hua Qiang and several robust servants, hurriedly ran away.

Then there were feasts at Butler Wong’s family, Landlord Li’s family, Qian Liang’s family, Wang Lizheng’s house, Wan Lizheng’s family, Huaqiang family, Qianxiang House... many families hosted guests, including the Master County Magistrate and the County Magistrate from the county town. Only Qian Sangui and Lady Wu attended these, while Qian Manjiang only attended those of the Master County Magistrate and the County Magistrate.

In the midst of all the eating and drinking, it finally became winter, and life finally settled down. Qian Sangui, exhausted from all the activity, could at last stay peacefully at home without going anywhere.

On the sixth day of the winter month, the couple Qian Manjiang and Pan Yue, along with their three children and generous gifts, made a trip to Zhang family in Xishan County Town and stayed there for two days. Qian Manjiang asked the old and Little Divine Doctors to give Pan Yue another consultation, hoping to prescribe her more medicine. Zhang Zhongkun said she was already out of danger and didn’t need to take any more medicine; since medicines have their side effects, from now on she just needed to eat more brain-healthy food like walnuts.

Because the two families were well-acquainted, without strict separation of the sexes, everyone ate together at the same table. Old Lady Zhang and others reminisced about how when Yixiu was young, though small in stature, she was clever and her sweet-talking would delight Old Lady Zhang immensely. Yixiu also mocked her own past of frequently visiting the Zhang family to scrounge food, and mentioned how she had "struck her first pot of gold" at their home, causing everyone to laugh uncontrollably.

Old Lady Zhang was in high spirits; although many years had passed and she was now over sixty, Yixiu thought she still looked like the first time she saw her. In the evening, Old Lady Zhang still kept Yixiu in her warm chamber, where the two of them talked late into the night.

My mother’s memory had mostly returned, and she no longer needed to continue taking medicine; it could be considered a full recovery from a serious illness.

Before, Yixiu was worried that her mother, after recovering, might end up estranged from Father Jiang, considering the stark difference in their upbringings. Later on, she realized those were needless worries. Her mother had spent much more time living with the Qian family than with the Pan family and got along well with the Qian clan, having been fully integrated.

Even though her own demeanor was still as ethereal and elegant as that of a fairy, she didn’t disdain the rustic manners of Qian Sangui and Lady Wu, nor did she look down on Qian Manjiang for being a martial man without literary talent. Moreover, she became much more tolerant of Yixiu, not obsessing over Yixiu’s lack of delicacy as in the past.

Of course, when Yixiu appeared in front of others, she was mostly elegant and refined, but her occasional impulsiveness would betray the fact that her elegance and refinement were put on, or perhaps a bit forced. For example, when she was excited, her mouth would stretch wide, her voice would rise, her walking would speed up, she would eat more of her favorite foods, and her passion for business and money was more clearly displayed, and so on.

In the interim, the Little Monk also stayed at Guiyuan for a few days. He slept at night in the courtyard once occupied by Zhu Sujin and during the day sought out Yixiu for company. He initially sought out Pan Yue, but most of his time was intercepted by Yixiu.

Although the honeymoon period for Father Jiang and Mother Duo had passed, they still enjoyed their world for two, willing to walk together by the West Lake or sneak away to Wangjiang Building to whisper sweet nothings.

In mid-winter, Father Jiang went out on business, saying he would be back in a few days. The night before his departure, he had sweet-talked Mother Duo, so although she was reluctant to let him go, she didn’t hinder him.

Yixiu and the others began to prepare for their return to the capital. As Father Jiang’s holiday was drawing to a close, he had to return to Yamen for roll call by December 19th. This meant they had to leave by December 1st at the latest.

Mother Duo’s illness was largely healed, and the trip had met, if not exceeded, the expected aims.

Just as Father Jiang left, the Little Monk arrived. This time, he clearly had something on his mind and was not as excited as before.
