Chapter 628: Chapter 314: I’ll Lead You_1

The trip this time was delightful. The autumn air was crisp, and the temperature was just right. When the sun was low, Qian Yixiu would take Mingming and Jingjing to frolic on the deck. With the House of Animals adding to the fun, laughter was non-stop.

Pan Yue usually wouldn’t leave her cabin, not because she feared someone bad would harm her, but because she was unaccustomed to the vast and boundless sky without walls to enclose her. She disliked the endless expanse of the heavens and waters, which made her feel insecure.

She looked out through the window of the cabin. The autumn in the North was rich in color, with the shores either red or golden, seldom green. As they traveled south, the greenery became more abundant, and the canal water seemed clearer. Flocks of geese flew southward, in groups and lines, calling "gaga" as they swept across the boundless sky.

"Boundless and endless, vast territories..." she muttered silently to herself. She didn’t like these words, nor the feeling they evoked.

Suddenly, an image of a tall earth wall appeared in her mind. Some parts had fissured due to its age and others were leaning slightly. Every spring and summer, the vines climbing the wall would burst into large, beautiful rosebuds.

That wall was wonderful; it shielded her from all calamities, from all the bad people who wished her harm.

As the image of the wall became clearer, another scene emerged in her mind: sitting in a run-down courtyard with the gate tightly closed, sometimes propped shut with a pole. Even though she was eager to see if the wildflowers outside had bloomed or wilted, she only dared to peek through the crack in the door...

Qian Manjiang knocked on the cabin door, but receiving no response, he pushed it open. This room was where Pan Yue and Qian Yixiu lived; Qian Manjiang could only come during the day to chat with Pan Yue. Forgetting what happened after her amnesia, Pan Yue tried to accept everyone and everything, but she still couldn’t accept the intimacy with Qian Manjiang. Just the thought of the romantic scenes from her dreams made her blush unbearably. Therefore, even when Qian Manjiang came in to talk, he had to keep a certain distance.

Qian Manjiang had no choice but to wait, to hope she would gradually remember the past and slowly accept him.

Qian Manjiang entered the cabin and saw Pan Yue sitting motionless by the bed, looking out the window.

"Yueyue," he called out softly.

Pan Yue turned around, her face already wet with tears.

Qian Manjiang, startled, quickly approached and bent down to ask, "What’s wrong, Yueyue?"

Pan Yue wept, "I remembered some things. The dilapidated courtyard, the tall earth wall, me sewing clothes under the peach tree, my father-in-law weaving baskets under the eaves, Yixiu squatting by the wall admiring flowers, my mother-in-law going out to farm, my sister-in-law hanging laundry. Jinwa came back from the village holding a few peanuts. He fed us, but father-in-law and my sister-in-law didn’t want any. Yueyue and Yixiu each ate one. These aren’t dreams, they’re real, things I’ve experienced, I can feel it." She wiped her tears with a wipe and added disappointedly, "Sadly, that’s all I can remember."

Although he wasn’t in these scenes, it was still a significant step forward. Qian Manjiang was overjoyed and smiled, "Don’t rush, Yueyue. You will remember more in time."

Pan Yue nodded, looked up at Qian Manjiang, her cheeks reddening again, and whispered, "I want to remember our matters quickly, but I just can’t seem to recall them."

Qian Manjiang consoled her, "Don’t worry, I can wait." In truth, his heart was almost bursting with impatience, but he had to comfort her all the same.

Pan Yue looked at Qian Manjiang intently for a few moments and murmured, "In my dreams, you’re much younger and you don’t have a beard."

Qian Manjiang stroked his stubble subconsciously and immediately declared, "I’ll shave my beard tonight."

Laughter from the children and the sounds from the House of Animals, along with Qian Sangui’s hearty laughter and Lady Wu’s admonishing not to get too close to the railing, came in from outside the window.

Pan Yue looked out again; from this spot, she could only see the water by the shore, not her family at the bow of the ship.

Qian Manjiang said, "Would you like to go out and have a look? Don’t be afraid, I’ll hold your hand, and your family will be with you. It’s like an invisible yard wall, stronger than any other wall."

Pan Yue thought for a moment, then stretched out her small hand.

Qian Manjiang’s large hand enveloped her soft, little one in an instant. Since Pan Yue had started remembering things, this was the first time he had held her hand. Soft, delicate, slightly cool; his heart uncontrollably began to race with warmth. He steadied himself and, holding Pan Yue’s hand, led her out of the cabin and down the stairs.
