Chapter 603: Chapter 304 Lady Cui_2
He stopped Qian Manjiang and walked forward to say, "I heard the Wu family kid got squeezed out of the Ministry of Rites and sent to manage peasants in the county?"
Qian Manjiang was slightly stunned, then nodded seriously, "Alas, it’s all because our connections aren’t strong enough; someone else got the position first by being more quick-footed."
Old man Qian laughed without agreement and said, "You can’t blame our family’s weak connections for this. If anyone’s to blame, it’s that the Wu family kid is only a Graduate. A Graduate, like a lady-in-waiting, how could he possibly enter the Six Ministries?"
Qian Manjiang nodded, "What you said is true, Father." He continued, "Father, we can’t let these words get out, or they’ll cause trouble."
Old man Qian waved his hand, "Do you think I’m foolish? I’ve seen my fair share of the world. I won’t take what’s said at home outside." With that, he hummed a tune and left.
Qian Yixiu lowered her head and chuckled to herself; Father Jiang was always good at bluffing.
In the upper room on the east side, both Wu Zuzhi and his son were present, lively discussing with Qian Sangui and Lady Wu. As soon as Qian Manjiang entered, Wu Qingshu stood up and said, "The Ministry of Appointments has ordered me to take up my position in Xijin County within half a month."
Qian Sangui also laughed, "Now that we’ve got the official document, we can relax. It’s just that the timing is a bit rushed."
The group discussed further that since time was tight, they had to send servants ahead to Xijin County to rent a double-entry courtyard house for the Wu family. They would buy their own home later when they were able to. Father and son from the Wu family thanked Qian Sangui for his thoughtful arrangements, and were even more anxious for other members of the Wu family to arrive from Zaozhou Province so they could take up the new post together.
Lady Wu was still somewhat reluctant to see them go. Wu Zuzhi said with a smile, "The journey from Capital City to Xijin County is just over three hours by carriage; it’s quite convenient. Once our house is properly set up, my sister can come and stay with us for a few days. Later on, you all will have a place to visit. Didn’t you say you have gardens and properties in Xijin County? When you’re there, just stay at our place."
At noon, Wu Zuzhi and his son were invited to stay for lunch in the main yard, where the men also drank wine.
When the wine was at its peak, a Servant reported that General Liang Jinzhao had arrived. Upon hearing this, Qian Manjiang hurried to the front courtyard, and not long after, he sent someone to invite Wu Zuzhi and Wu Qingshu to the front courtyard as well, where they talked until dusk.
When Liang Jinzhao stood to take his leave, Qian Manjiang invited him to stay for a drink. Ordinarily, Liang Jinzhao would have been willing, but not today. He shook his head with a smile, "Not today, I need to head home early to accompany the elders, and tomorrow morning I still have to rush to the camp."
After seeing off Liang Jinzhao, the three men from the Qian family went straight back to the main yard.
Inside the main hall, Old woman Qian and Lady Wu sat on the arhat bed chatting, while Pan Yue was playing with two children in the west side room. Dinner was approaching, and aside from Old man Qian, all the masters of the house had gathered.
In the east side room, Qian Yixiu sat on the kang, hugging Qian Sangui’s arm and laughing. Whenever he saw this scene, Qian Manjiang couldn’t help but feel envious; his daughter was much closer to her grandfather than to her own father.
Seeing the three men come in, Qian Sangui asked, "What brings the young man from the Liang family here?"
Qian Manjiang explained that Liang Jinzhao had thoroughly investigated the situation in Xijin County and had come especially to inform them, to give Wu Qingshu a heads-up.
Wu Qingshu exclaimed, "Back in Zaozhou, I had heard of General Liang’s great reputation, that he was a military prodigy, born into a prestigious family, and successful at a young age. Yet I never expected he’d be so approachable. Even though he has an old connection with your family, it’s rare for him to be so kind to someone like me, a modest Seventh Rank official... He came back in this great snow just to tell me these things. Tomorrow morning, he has to rush back again. Riding back and forth in this freezing weather, I really feel quite bad."
Grandma Wu also chimed in after hearing this, turning to Qian Yixiu and saying, "That Junior General Liang has it tough. When I think about it, ever since you were a child, he has always been helping us out. Last time, when the Monkey Brother and the others were trapped at Jiufeng Ridge, it was also him who led men to their rescue."
Qian Sangui also sighed and patted the back of Qian Yixiu’s hand.
As the heavy snow had fallen all day, Qian Yixiu was concerned about Liang Jinzhao braving the snowstorm, and she murmured, "He’s just a fool. A letter could have been sent by his subordinates."
Lady Wu blurted out, "That Junior General Liang is not a fool, and there’s a reason he personally came back..." Seeing her granddaughter’s face fall, she added, "Never mind, let’s not talk about that."
Qian Yixiu stood up and went to the west side room. After she left, Qian Sangui sternly advised Lady Wu, "Look at you, always saying things that make the child upset on purpose."
Wu Zuzhi and Wu Qingshu exchanged glances as if they were starting to understand why the Liang family was so eager to help. Seeing their expressions, Qian Manjiang spoke of the Liangs’ and the Qians’ previous verbal engagement agreement that was broken due to the opposition of Liang Jinzhao’s mother and manipulation by others, resulting in the contract being dissolved.
