Chapter 600: Chapter 303: Bait_2
Ever since the Little Monk arrived at the manor, Pan Yue often arranged vegetarian feasts at Xiyue Garden and invited the Little Monk over to eat. The Little Monk was usually very busy, always studying with Sean. He only had time to play with Qian Yixiu and the others during meals or in the evenings.
Today, everyone was present, the children chattered and laughed while eating, and Pan Yue occasionally joined in the fun. The House of Animals was also loud with their roaring and calling, adding to the festivity.
Zhu Sujin remarked, "It feels like we’re back in Guiyuan."
Pan Yue said, "If Jinwa didn’t return to Prince Ning Mansion, it would feel like we’re in Guiyuan every day."
The Little Monk chuckled, "Then let Brother Jin come home more often to accompany his aunt for meals."
Qian Manjiang shook his head with a smile, "Prince Ning Mansion is rather quiet, the Princely Heir should spend more time with the Prince and Princess."
As they were talking, a Servant came to report that someone from Liang Mansion had arrived, asking Little Master Hongji to visit Liang Mansion in the afternoon. Qian Yixiu then remembered she had promised Uncle Liang to visit Old Lady Liang. It had been so long, yet she hadn’t paid a visit to the old lady, which made her feel slightly embarrassed, so she said she would go with the Little Monk.
After the meal, Qian Yixiu dressed up, took two brocade boxes—one containing a ginseng and the other a Lingzhi mushroom—and rode in a carriage with the Little Monk to Liang Mansion. When they arrived at the main gate of Liang Mansion, the Little Monk got out of the carriage and went straight in. Then the carriage took Qian Yixiu to the Jiaomen, where she and Zi Zhu got out and were carried in a palanquin to visit Old Lady Liang at Wanhe Hall.
She had last visited Wanhe Hall several years ago. The birds chirped melodiously in the courtyard, just as enchanting as before, yet the cheerful laughter of the past was no longer present.
A maid led Qian Yixiu to the main room, passing through the hall and the east side room, and they went directly to Old Queen Grandma’s bedroom.
Old Queen Grandma’s head was wrapped in a scarf, wearing a middle-layer garment, and was covered with a brocade quilt, half-closing her eyes while leaning against the bed’s headboard. Lady Song, Second Madam Li, and two maidservants were sitting in the room.
The room had a heated kang and a charcoal brazier, with the windows and doors tightly sealed, making it hot and stuffy. Despite the strong scent of incense burning, it couldn’t suppress the smell of medicine and the distinctive musty odor of the elderly. Yixiu found this quite unbearable, so she quickly composed herself and pretended to be at ease.
Upon hearing that Qian Yixiu had come, the Old Lady opened her eyes and even stretched out a hand from under the quilt.
Qian Yixiu approached the bed to pay her respects to Old Queen Grandma, then grabbed the Old Lady’s extended hand. Her hand was extremely thin, the skin loose and flaky like dry tree bark.
Old Lady Liang patted Qian Yixiu’s fair and delicate hand and said, "Look at this hand, we old folks really ought to be gone."
Qian Yixiu, with tears welling up in her eyes, said, "Old Queen Grandma, you have great fortune and a long life ahead, surely you will live to a ripe old age."
Old Lady Liang chuckled, "You think this old woman is an Immortal and can live to be a hundred? Yet, honestly, I really do not wish to die so soon. I haven’t seen my Zhaozhao marry and have children, I wouldn’t know how to face my husband on the other side."
Qian Yixiu sat by her side, hand in hand, and began to talk about their previous life in the countryside, how some people lived past eighty and were still nimble, and how others, in their late seventies, still worked the fields. The reason those people lived so long was that they had matters at home they couldn’t let go of or bear to part from. She also talked about Master Sangui, who was so ill but held on because he couldn’t let go of his family, and now his health was improving...
The implication was that as long as one had the motivation and determination to carry on, it was possible to keep living.
"...With determination set, and the miraculous healing by the Old Fairy, why would Old Queen Grandma fear not living to be a hundred?"
Old Lady Liang was a person of strong will, and hearing this, she couldn’t help but be overjoyed.
While they were talking, Liang Jinyu arrived.
Liang Jinyu was also sweet-tongued, and her participation in the conversation brightened the Old Queen Grandma even more.
After a while, seeing that Old Queen Grandma was getting tired, everyone rose to leave. The Old Lady held onto Qian Yixiu’s hand and said, "Good child, come and chat with this old woman when you can, I enjoy hearing your stories about the countryside."
Qian Yixiu nodded in agreement, helped her to lie back down, and properly covered her with the quilt.
As they left the bedroom, they saw Old Duke Qian Liang and Liang Jinzhao sitting in the hall.
Old Duke laughed, "Old Queen Grandma hasn’t been this cheerful in a long time."
Lady Song laughed, "Indeed, today the Old Queen Grandma spoke more than she has in several days. It’s all thanks to Miss Qian, who made her laugh so heartily."
Old Duke Liang nodded and said to Qian Yixiu, "I hear you’re trying to help a fellow Graduate named Wu Qingshu find a position?"
