Chapter 541: Chapter 280 Hanging _2

Blue Bead called out to Qian Yixiu, "Miss..."

Qian Yixiu turned back and nodded at her, signaling that she was fine and asking her to follow Liang Gao’s arrangements.

Entering the room and passing by the four-panel screen decorated with plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, she faced two semi-circular carved window lattices, with a red lacquered wooden floor beneath her feet. There were two Western Region carpets on either side of the room, with a black lacquered, gold traced low table in front of them, and on each side of this were taller tables, each holding a Lotus Liuli Palace Lamp. There were calligraphies and paintings hung on the walls, a Duobao Pavilion shelf on the left, and a long table on the right with an ancient zither on it, alongside two pots of blooming orchids in a corner. The arrangement was elegant and comfortable, setting a very different tone.

Liang Jinzhao sat down cross-legged on the carpet behind the low table on the left, and then gestured with his hand for Qian Yixiu to sit behind the other one.

Once both were seated, two maids wearing white robes with green floral patterns came in, one carrying a copper kettle and the other holding a tray. On the tray were two pastel porcelain teapots, two pastel porcelain tea bowls, and a pastel porcelain tea caddy.

The maids knelt down, making tea for each of them with a rare Golden Eji found on the market. Afterward, they bowed and left the private room, closing the door behind them.

Liang Jinzhao watched Qian Yixiu, who was quietly casting her gaze downwards. The thin and short little girl from years ago had grown into a gorgeous and striking young woman. Unfortunately, the bright and wily character he once loved to tease had been replaced by a demure and modest demeanor. Even the bright and radiant smile that once burst forth upon seeing him no longer unfolded in joyous surprise.

He could still hear her crisp and charming voice in his ear, "Young Master Liang, what a rare visitor..."

Liang Jinzhao shook his head helplessly, took a sip of tea, and said with a forced smile, "Yixiu, look at me."

Qian Yixiu looked up at him briefly, then quickly lowered her head again.

Liang Jinzhao sighed, "Yixiu, we’ve known each other for seven years, haven’t we? Although there is a significant age difference, it didn’t stop us from becoming friends with whom we could share anything. I don’t know why, but when something troubles me, I just feel like sharing it with you. Back then, you were young, but I felt that you were clever and understood my thoughts..." His voice lowered, as if he was muttering to himself, "In those years, I was especially afraid of seeing sorrow in your eyes, afraid of seeing you cry. I didn’t want you to toil and travel for a living with your petite frame, nor to discuss adult business with your youthful voice. It pained my heart..."

Tears that Qian Yixiu could no longer hold back fell down, and she hurriedly pulled out a silk handkerchief from her sleeve to wipe them away.

Liang Jinzhao went on, "I always wanted to help you, to let you live carefree like my sister, without concerns for food and clothing. Even though my body was in the Capital City, my heart always remembered you, and I would instruct Shopkeeper Cui to take extra care of you..."

With her head bowed, Qian Yixiu said, "I know, when we were in the countryside, you helped me a lot. This favor, both me and my family have always remembered."

Liang Jinzhao’s eyes reddened as he said, "What is my little favor compared to your great kindness to me. That year, when I heard you had a destiny with the Spiritual Medicine and were going to brave dangers to enter the mountain to find it, I felt grateful and scared. I wanted to get better quickly, but I was also afraid that you might encounter danger. It was my master who reassured me, saying you were destined for a long and prosperous life, and that you wouldn’t easily come to harm. Only then did my heart ease. At that time, I swore if I recovered, I would do everything within my power to repay you... Later, when I went to the front lines, even amidst the chaos of war, I would still think of you. Then one day, I suddenly received a letter from Grandpa, saying he had arranged a marriage between you and me. I was indescribably happy at that moment, feeling like the luckiest person in the world, that my future years would be spent in happiness and satisfaction..."

He talked on and on for over half an hour, starting from the first time he saw Qian Yixiu in his youth, to the bolt from the blue when he heard the Qian family was unwilling to formally set the engagement.

Qian Yixiu, who had been human for two lifetimes, had only ever devoted herself to others; this was the first time she heard someone speak of such deep affection for her. Her tears kept flowing uncontrollably.

"Yixiu, why refuse my Grandpa’s proposal? How wonderful it would be for us to quickly set the engagement, to marry, and to be together forever," Liang Jinzhao said eagerly.

Upon hearing him mention this, Qian Yixiu snapped out of her deep emotions, wiped her tears with the handkerchief, and said, "Marriage is a significant matter, it requires the command of parents and the arrangement of the matchmaker. It’s the elders’ wish."

Liang Jinzhao shook his head, "Yixiu, how long have we known each other, am I not familiar with your personality? Am I not clear about your family’s affairs? Not to mention such a significant matter as marriage, isn’t it true that all your family’s affairs have always been decided by you, with Grandpa Qian always listening to you?"
