Chapter 535: Chapter 277: The Confession of the Mischievous Child_3

The little boy was still too young; upon being challenged by Qian Yixiu’s words, he found himself at a loss for words. He couldn’t claim that the affection between siblings was fake, yet it seemed as though true sibling affection meant they couldn’t become husband and wife, which frustrated him so much that he pursed his lips tightly together.

The two sat in silence for a while. Then Qian Yixiu stood up and said, "Let’s go back, Mother and my younger brother and sister should be waking up soon."

Zhu Sujin grumbled, "Sister, Brother doesn’t want to separate from you."

Qian Yixiu sighed, "Actually, the affection between a brother and sister is sometimes longer-lasting and more sincere than that between a husband and wife. The affection between a husband and wife may fade, might turn into conflict, could be physically together but emotionally apart, and may even end in complete separation. But the bond between siblings is a lifelong connection that can’t be cut; Brother will always be Sister’s support, and Sister will always support her Brother. Isn’t that wonderful?"

"It’s not good," said Zhu Sujin, and with that, he strode ahead back home.

Qian Yixiu followed behind him, waiting whenever the distance between them grew too large. Once she caught up, he would stride ahead again. He wanted Qian Yixiu to know that he was angry, very angry.

Qian Yixiu found it somewhat amusing and also a little heart-wrenching. The bear child was growing up.

Dinner that night was with the Rongen Earl Mansion family. None of the other Pan family members came, except for the addition of Zhu Sujin, an outsider. The banquet was set up in the Fenge Pavilion of the outer courtyard. Because Prince Consort Pan and Pan Yang had often eaten with the Qian family back in Huaxi Village, there was no need to avoid being seen together, so men and women dined together. They were only separated by tables, without even a screen between them.

Lady Fu was forthright and generous, not feeling uncomfortable at all. Of all the people present, only Pan Yuanfeng felt constrained.

Usually, Pan Yuanfeng didn’t come to the Rongen Earl Mansion that often, and now she felt even more uneasy dining with two foreign men.

Good heavens, what was Father thinking, allowing them to dine in the same room with foreign men, without even a screen in between? She noticed Prince Consort Pan’s gaze frequently sweeping over Pan Yue and understood the reason. The bitterness in her heart intensified.

Before the Qian family left, Prince Consort Pan said to Pan Yue, "Yueyue, come to the mansion to play when you’re free. We’ve kept your courtyard ready for you."

With a glance at him, Pan Yue pouted and said, "Yueyue doesn’t like talking to you."

Prince Consort Pan sighed and picked up Jingjing, smiling, "Jingjing, come visit Grandpa’s house more with your mother in the future. Grandpa and Uncle miss you."

"Mother doesn’t like you, so Jingjing doesn’t like you either," said Jingjing. After speaking, she glanced at Sister Hu in the distance and then lowered her head.

Laughing, Prince Consort Pan said, "Fine, if you don’t visit Grandpa, then Grandpa will come to visit you. From now on, every other day, Grandpa will go to the Qian Mansion to teach your sister painting. When Mingming and Jingjing grow up, you can learn from Grandpa too."

The next day, Qian Yixiu resumed her painting lessons with Grandfather Pan. It’s said that calligraphy and painting are closely related, and she had studied calligraphy for several years. Although she was still far from being a master, she was definitely among the best in terms of writing among the ladies of the chamber. Mr. Yu had said before he left Huaxi Village that Qian Yixiu’s calligraphy ranked among the top in Capital City’s noble ladies. That was enough!

Now she was learning to paint, and though she knew she wouldn’t achieve the same level of expertise in painting as she had in calligraphy, she didn’t set a high goal for herself – she just wanted to be able to paint. What she wanted was the title of "the female disciple of Pan Zi’an and Yu Xiu, two great masters."

Qian Yixiu suggested learning to paint fine-brushed figurative painting, and later, by adding some modern elements, she might even fool people.

She was extremely busy these days with painting, etiquette lessons, making time for exchanges with two foreigners, and managing the household affairs. Time flew by quickly.

That day, after finishing her chores, it was nearing dusk.

She went to the main courtyard, where Old man Qian and Old woman Qian were present, with Lady Wu talking with them in the hall. Qian Sangui was in the west side room, with Butler Wong reporting some matters to him.

Butler Wong sat on a small brocaded stool. Seeing Qian Yixiu arrive, he quickly got to his feet and bowed, saying, "Miss."

The Qian family was now very courteous to Butler Wong. From what Pan Yue had hinted at, it seemed that the fact Pan Yue had survived might be due to the Wet Nurse’s fierce protection, which might have spared her much harm.

Qian Yixiu smiled and said, "Please sit, Manager Wong."

After a brief conversation, Butler Wong rose and left.

Finding themselves alone, Qian Yixiu went over to Master Sangui and whispered in low voices the rumors she had heard around the corner. Those words infuriated Qian Sangui, who dreaded the thought of his granddaughter suffering hardships in her marital home.

The two whispered together for a while. With their own family’s influence being quite modest, they dared not offend the Liang Mansion. It would be better for Prince Consort Pan to step in, suggesting he had heard some unsavory rumors, and to thus delay the matter. Ideally, they would delay until Grandma Liang successfully intervened, leading the Liang Family Head to voluntarily call off the marriage.

Two days later, the Qian family received another invitation from the Prince Ning Mansion. Princess Ning invited the Qian family ladies to visit the Prince Residence the next day. Since the Princess was unwell and Zhu Sujin had to study in the palace during the day, they were asked to come in the afternoon and dine at the Prince Residence in the evening, so they could also see Zhu Sujin.
