Chapter 481: Chapter 256 Special Gift_1
Prince Consort Pan looked upon this serene and tranquil scene, his heart exceedingly at peace and tender. Having lived more than half a lifetime, he had finally understood what he really wanted.
He said, "Yueyue, I’m here again. I’ve also brought Brother Jie; he’s my eldest grandson and is already six years old."
When Cheng Yue saw this man coming again, she frowned disapprovingly and said, "You’re such a nuisance, what are you doing at my house again? Don’t think that just because you’re not wearing large pearls, Yueyue won’t be annoyed with you."
Before Brother Jie arrived, Pan Yang had repeatedly drilled into him the need to get close to Auntie Cheng. On the boat, Grandpa had also instructed him to spend more time with "Auntie Cheng" and her children.
He had intended to greet Auntie Cheng, but seeing how much Grandpa was disliked, he felt sure that he wouldn’t be welcomed either. He was too embarrassed to step forward and speak, his face flushed with shyness as he twisted his fingers, unsure of what to do. He was even too shy to greet the Embroidered older sister he had met before.
Qian Yixiu quickly took Jingjing down from the swing, walked around it with a smile, and after paying respects to Grandpa Pan with a curtsey, she grabbed Brother Jie’s hand and said with a smile, "Brother Jie, welcome."
No sooner had she finished speaking than Ming Wa and Jingjing came tumbling over, clapping their hands vigorously and muttering, "Fan ying, fan ying, fan ying..."
Their speech was unclear, and coupled with a slight accent, "welcome" was pronounced as "fan ying."
Shan Dian wouldn’t be left out either, running over to sit on the ground and paw at the ground while barking twice to express his welcome.
Realizing he was indeed welcomed, Brother Jie’s mouth stretched into a wide grin, and all his previous embarrassment vanished. He found the chubby toddlers endearing, and for some reason Benben seemed to get smaller the more he grew—though he was also endearing. He greeted each one, "Embroidered older sister, Mingming, Sister Jing, Benben, hehe."
Jingjing giggled upon hearing him and quickly pointed at Shan Dian, saying, "It’s Shandian, not Benben, Uncle Benben’s baby."
Qian Yixiu explained with a laugh, "What Jingjing means is that it’s Shan Dian, Benben’s precious son."
Brother Jie chuckled and said, "Oh, I got it wrong then, it’s Shan Dian. What a majestic name."
Sensing that Brother Jie had come to be a peacemaker, Qian Yixiu also knew that her uncle, Pan Yang, had once shared a very good relationship with her young mother. So she led Brother Jie over to her mother and said, "Mom, this little brother is Brother Jie. Look how adorable and well-mannered he is." She was still worried that her mother wouldn’t give Brother Jie face.
Brother Jie, who was quite the little imp, saw that Auntie Cheng’s gaze was soft and didn’t seem to despise him; he also took to the pretty Auntie Cheng. And for some reason, he felt that her face looked familiar, as if he had seen her before.
He hurriedly bowed to her and said coyly, "Auntie Cheng, I really like you, and I really like Brother Jin, Embroidered older sister, Mingming, and Sister Jing as well."
Cheng Yue, who already adored children, felt an inexplicable heartache when she looked at this child. Now hearing his words, she liked him even more. She nodded and said, "Mmhmm, Yueyue likes you too, Jinwa, Yixiu, Ming Wa, and Jingjing all like you. And Brother Jiang, Hongji, father-in-law, and grandmother, they like you too." She glanced at Prince Consort Pan and added, "But I don’t like him, and neither do any of us."
Upon hearing this, Brother Jie laughed and whispered, tugging at her sleeve, "Let me tell you a secret, Auntie Cheng, my dad doesn’t like Grandpa either, really."
Qian Yixiu burst into laughter, remarking inwardly that Grandpa Pan’s interpersonal relationships were a mess, having been betrayed by his own grandson upon arrival.
Prince Consort Pan heard their conversation and wasn’t angry; instead, he walked about five steps away from Cheng Yue where a little stool was placed and sat down. He then beckoned to Ming Wa and Jingjing, who were still staring at him, and said in a pleasing tone, "Jingjing, Mingming, come to Grandpa Pan; Grandpa has brought you nice things."
Ming Wa and Jingjing had grown much taller now and, though they still walked and ran with some tumbling, were relatively stable compared to other kids their age.
Ming Wa wore a set of stone-blue satin clothes embroidered with floral designs and open-crotch pants, with a short tuft of hair combed on top of his head, soaring up just like Jinwa used to.
Jingjing was dressed in grass-green satin with embroidered plum blossoms, wearing a short coat and a little skirt. Two tufts of hair were combed on either side of her head. The little girl’s hair was slightly curly, unlike the young Qian Yixiu’s. The former young master’s curliness was due to malnutrition—it was too soft to stand up straight. While the little girl’s hair had natural curls, making the tufts bend charmingly at the sides. Qian Yixiu playfully referred to them as "Sheep ears."
